In My Reading Life

A bunch of my library holds came in at the same time. How am I supposed to read all these? One of the books is nearly 1000 pages! I decided to ignore the big one and read the ones that are short and (possibly) freakin' adorable.

I finished The Very Secret Society Of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna. It was freakin' adorable! It's about a lonely witch named Mika Moon who can't form close relationships because she has to keep her powers hidden. Then, someone sees through her efforts to hide herself. She's offered a job as a tutor for three young witches who live in a remote mansion. The children and the staff at the mansion quickly become Mika's new witchy family. However, they're keeping a dangerous secret that may expose all their powers.

The characters are where this book shines. They're so kind and genuine. They get along well and care deeply about each other. I want to be friends with them in real life.

There's a romance plotline, but I didn't hate it! The romance doesn't overwhelm the entire story because Mika and Jamie both have jobs and interests outside of each other. It's a slow-burn romance. Both characters are used to hiding themselves, so it takes them a while to open up. I like Mika and Jamie and was very happy that they found love when they badly needed it.

I didn't like the plot as much as the characters. I know this is a cozy book, so it's supposed to be funny and low stakes, but some of the plot events are really convenient. All the messy problems are solved neatly and easily. It's one of those novels that I finish and go, "Oh . . . that's it? It's over already?" The plot just doesn't have much substance.

If you're looking for a whimsical book with a romance that won't make you gag, then this is the novel for you! It'll make you smile.

The second freakin' adorable book I read was Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree. It's a cozy fantasy about an orc named Viv who's tired of all the quests and battles. She decides to settle down in a small (I think?) town and open a coffee shop. There's only one problem: No one in town has ever heard of coffee.

An orc, a succubus, and a Ratatouille open a Medieval Cinnabon . . .

I'm not sure why a book about working at a coffee shop is labeled "cozy." Have you ever had a customer service job? "Cozy" is the last thing I'd call it. Technically, the book is "cozy fantasy." The "fantasy" part is where the customers are nice to the staff.

Mostly, this novel just made me crave cinnamon rolls. I'm so hungry all the time.

Okay. Focus. Legends & Lattes is exactly what it says in the synopsis. It's about a group of misfit magical creatures who open a coffee shop. They have to deal with renovations, sourcing equipment, advertising, and getting hassled by old frenemies and a local gang. Despite the bumps in the road, the reader knows that it will all work out in the end. It's a slow, comforting, low stakes story where the characters have way more successes than failures. Honestly, it reminds me of those cozy, repetitive video games that are meant to reduce anxiety. "Cozy" and "Repetitive" are good words to describe the book.

This novel is subtilty hilarious. Most of the humor comes from watching the characters step outside of stereotypes. Orcs and succubusses succubi aren't usually the heroes of stories. And there's an entire movie about how people don't want their cinnamon rolls cooked by Ratatouilles. It's amusing to watch the characters enthusiastically pursue their dreams while sidestepping everybody's expectations. There are even moments where Viv has to sidestep her own expectations. She's not a violent soldier anymore. Now she's a coffee shop owner and has to act accordingly.

If the characters were humans instead of creatures, this story could have happened in our world. That's one of my complaints. I want more fantasy in my cozy fantasy. Or maybe more worldbuilding. I want to know about Thune, the town where the story is set. For example, Viv learns about coffee when she visits a gnome village on a quest. The majority of the creatures in Thune have never heard of coffee, even though there are gnomes living in Thune. How big is Thune? What are the demographics? Did the gnomes invent coffee generations ago, or did they recently get it from somewhere else? I realize that this stuff might be beyond the scope of cozy fantasy, but I spent way too much time thinking about it.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. It's quick and fun. I like fantasy worlds where customer service is "cozy." I'll read the prequel if my library gets it.

In The Rest Of My Life

Are you ready for more riveting skunk content? Someday I'll stop writing about skunks, but today is not that day! (You're thrilled. I can tell.)

I'm not sure if the skunk deterrents are working, or if the skunks are just following their own schedules, but most of them have left the building! I suspect there are only one or two skunks under the house right now. Progress has been made with the stink situation. It smells nearly tolerable in here. I don't have a constant headache from the stench anymore. My clothes and furniture still smell like a war crime, so the bottles of skunk odor neutralizer are getting a workout, but it's a major improvement over last week.

My skunkumentary video is shorter this time because there are fewer skunks. I even captured some not-skunks on video! And we have new camera angles. Oooh, fancy. Much professional. Such documentary.

I'm still waiting for the BBC to buy my nature footage

Take care of yourselves and be kind to each other. See you around the blogosphere!

  1. Unfortunately, it seems that library holds ALWAYS all come in at once. It must be something in the quantum physics sphere related to time that I don't understand. I am so excited to see you gushing about cozy books. Witches was precious. I am know I am looking forward to the sequel. I didn't realize those beasts were skunking your home. That is pretty terrible. Glad to see you are making progress though.

  3. So the skunks are moving on? That's a good thing:-) I really want to read both The Secret Society of Irregular Witches and Legends & Lattes, both sound just cozy enough:-)

  4. I can't stop laughing at the comments on the hog graphic. Priceless. I see so many raves for Legends & Lattes. One of these days I will pick it up.

  5. Good to hear that the skunks have gone marching onward. I hope they prefer their new destination and don’t rethink their choice to leave you mostly alone. The videos make them look very beautiful. 😞

  6. All you need is David Attenborough to narrate your footage and you will hit the big time!

  7. That always happens to me - all the library holds come in at the same time. I would have read the shorter ones too. Hope you have a great week!

  8. I hate when ALL my library holds come in at once...and it seems to happen a lot. And I totally loved The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches! It's such a magical read. I've got Legends and Lattes on my summer reading list, because that one sounds fun, too. Have a good week. :D

  9. I now have 9 library holds that have come in over the last 2 weeks. I still have some I am waiting on, but hopefully I will get through some of these first. That is as close to a skunk as I want to be! It is interesting to see them on camera though, I enjoyed the other critters too.

  11. Those are plush skunks. Beautiful, really. Still, I'm sure you are glad that these guys have found a new home.

The Very Secret Society Of Irregular Witches sounds quite fun. I tried the coffee shop book, but I decided to pass on it.

  13. My library lends seem to come all at once too! It must be a rule or something. The Very Secret Society Of Irregular Witches sounds wonderful and I love that cover, too! Omg, skunks are the worst! They smell so terrible and are mean! One went and bit the head of a few neighborhood chickens just because. Didn't eat any of the bird. Why?? Here's hoping for a skunk-free life for you!

  14. It's so sad they smell so bad because they are elegant!

  15. yes all the library holds come available at once. The computer holds them up and releases them all on one day. lol I do like the Deliver later option and since I do all digital books ebooks and audio, I don't have to find time to go to the library to pickup or return books. I'm glad the skunks have mostly headed out. Was it a mating convention and now they are all going home?

  16. For this reason, I love the option on Libby to request the book later (which is usually a week later) while holding my place in line. I don't do that often, but I have done it before. That way I don't feel I have to read all the books all at once. :)

  17. Legends and Lattes looks s ofun. I love the whole idea of cozy fantasy.

That video! Those skunks are acting like they own the place. My grandpa would have shot those suckers. He used t oshoot the chipmunks that dug under his landscaping. Everyone used to say nooo don't shoot them but he was like bam. Of course if you shoot them they probably smell REAL good

  18. Love the video. Man those are big skunks. I'm glad you are getting some skunk relief. They seem to like your deck and whatever's under there.

  19. Yes my library holds all come in at the same time too! I love your night camera! We have skunks that pass through our yard but our biggest villains are raccoons who wrecked our roof years ago. We have to apply a product called Tanglefoot to our fence line because the raccoons get onto our roof via the fence. We also have wire screening to our air intakes along the soffits as they like to enter into our attic through here. Have a great week AJ!

  20. I hate when all my library holds come in at the same time. If they're physical books, then I try to read what I can. If they're ebooks or audiobooks, then I usually push the hold out to later so I can have a chance to read them, lol.

I'm glad the skunks seem to be leaving. I hope the odor neutralizer will help in the long run and the smell will go away completely!

  21. Those are some pretty huge skunks! My library holds always seem to come at the same time... the delay feature has become my best friend!

  22. Library holds were once my undoing, so I stopped. Pressure to read in time made it no fun. Glad your skunks are seeking a different location. Hope that continues. Enjoy your week!

  23. I love Legends & Lattes, and I also have The Very Secret Society on my tbr. I'm glad they were fun for you although I'm ruefully laughing about the whole customer service thing not being cozy. Definitely just a fantasy! Lol!

  24. Oof, so glad those skunks seem to be making their way somewhere else!

  25. Frustrating when all the good books come in a block like that! And I've read both Legends & Lattes and the Very Irregular Society and loved them both, too. Though I agree that the plotting in the Very Irregular Society isn't the strongest:). Good news regarding the skunks and I hope they all decide to relocate very soon! Have a less stinky week, AJ.

  26. Isn't that a rule somewhere? All library holds come in at one. The Very Secret Society is one of my all-time favorite books ever. I love it so much and can't wait for the sequel which comes out this year. I still need to read Legends and Lattes and the prequel but my husband bought them for me for Christmas so I don't have to locate copies. Love the trail-cam footage. Hope you have a great week!

  27. Glad you skunk situation is getting under control. Just think, from your top graph, if you lived in Iowa, you'd have enough hogs to cover up any skunk stench :).

  28. Glad to hear that the skunks are moving on. I hope they love their new location. Your books do sound good. I have Legends & Lattes but haven't had a chance to read it yet. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  29. Ahh, always good to see people enjoying Legends & Lattes -- I really adored it.

  30. Library holds always come in at the same time. It's one of the laws of life. I'm glad the skunk situation is starting to get better!

  31. I am so glad you liked The Very Secret Society Of Irregular Witches. It was such a fun read. I loved those characters too. I wouldn't have minded learning more about Thune in Legends & Lattes too. I am glad the skunk situation is getting better. We don't see too many here, but we can smell them sometimes so we know they're out there. Have a great week!
