  • I recommend nonfiction books for Nonfiction November!

In My Reading Life

I finished Followers by Megan Angelo. I actually DNFed it a few months ago, but I wasn't sure if that was my fault or the book's, so I gave it another chance. It's a dystopia about famous people and the reporters who get paid to write about them. In this world, the famous people are kept in luxurious zoos and have cameras pointed at them constantly. Their only goal is to get followers so they can become more famous. Then, one of the famous women escapes and makes a run for her life. I probably should have listened to my first instinct and not finished this book. It's not bad! It's funny and raises interesting questions. Like, what would our lives be like if we lost the internet and had to rebuild it from scratch? What would we change about it? And, how can you trust anyone when everyone wants to be famous? How do you know if your friends are using you for fame? I struggled with this book because the characters are all awful humans, but they're not awful in ways I find compelling. I guess I'm just not interested in fame? The characters' problems didn't hold my attention, and I found the plot's pacing painfully slow. Actually, the book reminds me of those "housewives" shows. A lot of over-the-top drama and selfish people fighting for attention. Like the "housewives" shows, it didn't do much for me. I understand the appeal, though.

I had better luck with Obsidio by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. This is the conclusion to a chunky science fiction trilogy set in space. It follows a group of teens whose planet has been attacked by a hostile company that wants the planet's natural resources. Some of the teens are refugees on a rescue spaceship. Others are still trapped on the planet. They all want revenge. It's a great finale! I love seeing how the plotlines and characters converge. There's action and twists and explosions. I was nervous that my favorite characters wouldn't make it to the end. My only complaint is the "security camera footage" sections. I know that they're necessary for the reader to understand what's happening, but there are too many of them. I prefer the transcripts and artistic sections of the book. They're fun to read. Overall, it's a beautifully creative trilogy. I recommend it.

Nonfiction November starts tomorrow! I'll be reading nonfiction all month. My first book will be The 57 Bus: A True Story Of Two Teenagers And The Crime That Changed Their Lives by Dashka Slater. I guess we're starting the month with true crime.

In The Rest Of My Life

Five things that made me happy last week:

  1. Happy Halloween!
  2. Happy Halloween candy!
  3. I caught up on the current season of The Great British Bake Off, and I'm super excited for all the holiday baking shows on the Food channel. I really wish I could bake, but I don't need the calories. I have to be happy watching other people do it.
  4. I started running again. I didn't run for a month because I was sick and busy. Now I'm back to running 4 days a week. It's sad how much fitness I lost in a month. My first 5k after my time off was brutal. It was below freezing outside. I thought my lungs were going to explode.
  5. I'm back to making content for Pinterest! I barely made anything all summer because I was working too many hours and didn't have the energy. I missed you Pinterest, even though you still haven't fixed the annoying parts of your algorithm. I even made a meme about it.

  2. Sounds like you are getting back into the swing of things. Don't be so hard on yourself. It's great you are running again. I was happy with Obsidio. I get what you are saying about the security camera footage. It was probably my least favorite format, but effective for getting parts of of the story across to us.

  3. I'm glad you have been able to get back to running. We were really walking a lot earlier in the year, but the heat was killing us, even at 7 am.

Obsidio is part of a series that I've always been interested in reading. I just like the novelty of the way the book is put together.

Can't wait to see your recommendations for Nonfiction November!

  4. Well when I went back to my fitness club in May when the lockdown eased up here I was winded after just a few minutes! So yes getting back in the saddle is brutal!

  5. My daughter likes all the cooking shows so I've watched some of the Bake-off and currently we are watching Hell's Kitchen. Good for you with the running, I'm just trying to get in daily walking. I need to figure out what to do next July - August when it's too hot to walk. I don't want to lose the habit. Happy Halloween!

  6. I've got The 57 Bus on my kindle! I learned about it last year during Nonfiction November, then picked it up as a daily deal somewhere along the line. Thanks for reminding me.

  10. Happy Halloween! I've been gorging on candy. And yes Obsidio is awesome. Pinterest? What is Pinterest??? Oh yeah, PINTEREST. Gah I need to do something about my Pinterest... I'm so behind. I probably have like 1,638 "suggestions" lol

    Have a good week!!!

  12. The 57 Bus looks really good! I look forward to your thoughts about it.

Best of luck with your running. I agree, it is amazing how quickly you lose fitness. But I am equally amazed at how quickly, albeit painfully, fitness comes back.

    Have a great week!

  13. I read Illuminae and Gemina but haven't seen Obsidio yet. I read mostly on my Kindle these days and those books need to be read in print. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  14. I’m with you all the way on the Great British Baking Show — it makes me want to bake too, but the calories are impossible.

  15. Hi there AJ! Followers sounds as if it can be interesting. Hmmm... let me take a look and think about it!

Happy Halloween (2 days late!). I hope you still have some candy left and hide it in places only you can find it.

    Have a good week!

  17. I found myself eating Snickers candy bar all October. Not enough left for trick or treating.

  18. I agree about the security footage in Obsidio. That was probably my only complaint about the whole book. That's great that you're getting back to running again. That's something I've always wanted to do, until I actually try it and feel like I'm going to die within less than 2 minutes, lol.

  19. Your meme is funny. We have way too much Halloween candy left over .... argh. those kiddies never showed up! they tricked us all right

  20. The Pinterest meme is too funny. I didn't realize the new series of the Great British Bake Off was on! I need to sign back up for Netflix! I have very much enjoyed the Halloween candy and have already stolen all the Almond Joys out of the bags we ended up with. Good luck with your running! Have a great week!

  21. I gave up on Pinterest last year when they tried to close my account for no reason. Then when I got it back, I decided I was done with it. Yay for Halloween candy! Though my hips may not be so happy. :)

  23. Ha, the only 'Housewives' show I've ever bothered to watch is the New Jersey one, because figuring out whether or not they all have mafia connections is mildly entertaining. Lol.
