In My Reading Life
My entire reading life has been consumed by The Incorrigible Children Of Ashton Place by Maryrose Wood. If you enjoy middlegrade books or have a tween in your life, you need to pick up this series. I'm currently reading book #5, and I never want the series to end. The books are so clever and happy! They're currently providing approximately 76% of the joy in my life. I just want to read this series and not do anything else.
The novels star a quirky 15-year-old orphan who is hired to be a governess in a mansion. When she gets to her new home, she discovers that her students were raised by wolves. The owner of the mansion found the kids in the woods and brought them home. (Or, that's the story the owner tells. It may not be true.) Chaos and mysteries ensue. This series is a delightful romp. Read it if you enjoy historical fiction. Or happiness.
Then, Fraterfest Readathon started, so I picked up Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. I've only read 100 pages, but I really like it so far. It's about a creepy house full of weird people. The Rebecca vibes are strong. I want to know what happens next.
In The Rest Of My Life
Five things that made me happy last week:
- It hasn't snowed yet, but it's really cold, so my work hours have been cut down for the winter. I don't have to work fulltime again until spring. I love not waking up at 3:45 in the morning. NOBODY SHOULD BE AWAKE AT 3:45 IN THE MORNING! IT'S CRUEL AND UNUSUAL! Especially if you have to go to work and deal with other humans.
- My yoga streak is still alive. I've done yoga every day since February 1, 2020.
- We put up our Halloween decorations because baby Brooklyn is obsessed with Halloween. When it gets closer to the actual holiday, I'll show you photos of Brooklyn in her costume(s). She's adorable. And very, very excited.
- Readathons! Fraterfest is happening right now, and Dewey's is next Saturday. I hope the readathons kick my butt back in gear. I was terrible at finishing books during the summer.
- I've been listening to AJR's OK Orchestra album on repeat for days. I like all the songs, but today I recommend "Humpy Dumpty," "World's Smallest Violin," and "3 O'clock Things."
Love the cartoon at the top of your post. And your good things! Enjoy your week, and thanks for visiting my blog.
ReplyDeleteThe art in The Incorrigible Children is done by Jon Klassen, and I know I'd love the story of any book he did the art for. I will see if I can find this series.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter-in-law gets up at two in the morning to go to work. It certainly does cut down on traffic at that time of the day.
Halloween was always my favorite holiday when I was a kid. Who doesn't love dressing up in costumes and getting lots of candy?! Enjoy!
I think I signed out instead of posting, so hope this isn't a repeat comment. I will be on vacation next weekend so may not be able to participate in the Dewey readathon. But, if it rains, which is likely, I may use it as an excuse to sit around and read.
ReplyDeleteThat books looks interesting. I am having a slow reading month, but am enjoying my time

Yay for yoga! I love it too. And you are so right, no one should have to be awake and functioning for the day at 3:45 AM. I know I couldn’t handle it. Have a wonderful week ahead!
ReplyDelete3:45AM????!! That's a hard no from me.
ReplyDeleteI just read a bunch of reviews for Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place. I definitely need to take a look here. I actually shower at 3:45 because I leave for work at 5 am. Can't wait to see the kid in costume.
ReplyDeleteIncorrigible Children of Ashton Place looks like such a cute series... just love the artwork on the cover, too. I've been on the fence about Mexican Gothic. The reviews seem to be all over the place, but I'm glad you're enjoying it!
ReplyDeleteI am definitely adding The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place to my TBR. I am currently reading The trials of Morrigan Crow (Nevermoor #1) and I love it! I love middle grade reads.
ReplyDeleteI am also taking part in Fraterfest and read Home Before Dark yesterday. Mexican Gothic is still on my TBR and I hope to get to it eventually. Probably next year Halloween with the state of my TBR...
Have a good week and enjoy all your Halloween fun!

I read the first book in The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place back when it came out, but somehow never got back to reading the series. It was a lot of fun!
ReplyDeleteReadathons sound fun, I can never seem to make one work for me. Enjoy!
We are in full Halloween mode around here too! Lol. And 3:45! What the heck! That is not a time to wake up. I refuse to believe that you had to do that. Glad you have a better schedule for a while now. :)
ReplyDeleteI used to wake up at 5:00 am for work and I thought that was bad. 3:45? Not for me :) Mexican Gothic looks really good. Hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteIncorrigible sounds fun! And I love Halloween time, but I haven't put any decorations up yet. Not even a pumpkin. I need to get going.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you have had some great changes now. Congrats on hanging in there with your yoga! Thank you for sharing about Dewey maybe I will manage to read some for it.
ReplyDeleteAnne - Books of My Heart This is my Sunday Post
Added Incorrigible children to my TBR. Sounds fun!
ReplyDeleteDamn...I should've had a kid just so I could drag it around trick or treating and then I could eat most of their candy. Next life, #planbetter Jinjer!
Fun Halloween doings! Looking forward to pics of your decorations. Have a good week.
ReplyDeleteOkay, you have convinced me that I need to read The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place - I am adding it to my TBR now and checking to see if my library has them.

With less work, more time to read, eh? I'm impressed with your yoga streak.
ReplyDeleteNow what about this Yoga. Is it a class or a virtual self thing? What kind is it? Ashtanga? or Bikram? Or what? It is impressive your commitment & dedication .... I too did yoga once for many years ... then I finally got old. ha life bites. Enjoy. & keep it going.
ReplyDeleteAh the Halloween love sounds gorgeous. Yikes that is early glad winter is coming to rescue you.The Maryrose Wood book sounds really intriguing.
ReplyDeleteI've always been a morning person but 3:45 is a bit much even for me. Good riddance to that ungodly hour until spring!
ReplyDeleteThe Maryrose Wood books sound really good! Yay for not having to wake up so early for work. That sounds awful.
ReplyDeleteI do love Halloween - can't wait to see Brooklyn's costumes!

Yay about not getting up at 3:45AM! Nice good things too. I think one needs a child around to appreciate the upcoming holidays - except Thanksgiving because I really like turkey and stuffing. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteI agree, that is way to early to get up for work. I have never tried yoga. Hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteNo one should be up that early. :) Kuddos to you on the yoga. I love Halloween. I have a lot of decorations inside and a few outside.
ReplyDeleteI *loved* The Incorrigibles! If you listen to audiobooks, you should listen to this series. Katherine Kellgren's narration really took the books over the top! Unfortunately, she passed away before she could narrate the last book in the series.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your yoga streak and the better hours! 3:45 is an unholy hour of the morning. I can do it if I'm up all night (I worked nights for 11 years) but no way can I wake up then.
Enjoy your week!
Yikes. 3:45 in the morning is ROUGH. No no no. Glad you get to sleep in for a few months!
ReplyDeleteI really loved Mexican Gothic, but then hated Velvet is the Night and DNF-ed it. I am so excited to see what you think of the rest, and the ending!!
ReplyDeleteEleanor and I are definitely going to start reading the Ashton Place books, they sound so fun!
That is far too early for any human to wake up. My BIL regularly gets up at 4 for work and it just seems like insanity. The Ashton Place series looks fantastic and I will definitely be looking for it. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteHow have I never heard of the Incorrigible Children? I'm going to have to check them out! I hadn't heard of AJR either, and they are delightful. So thank you!
ReplyDeleteMexican Gothic is on my TBR, it sounds so good. And yes, 0345 is WAY too early to get up!
