Can’t Wait Wednesday is hosted by Wishful Endings. I get to talk about the intriguing books
coming out this month. October has two of my most-anticipated releases of 2020,
so it should (hopefully) be an excellent month for books.
π October 2020 Book Releases π
The Invisible Life Of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab
Adult Fantasy
October 6, 2020
France, 1714: in a moment of desperation, a
young woman makes a Faustian bargain to live forever and is cursed to be
forgotten by everyone she meets.
Thus begins the extraordinary life of Addie
LaRue, and a dazzling adventure that will play out across centuries and
continents, across history and art, as a young woman learns how far she will go
to leave her mark on the world.
But everything changes when, after nearly 300
years, Addie stumbles across a young man in a hidden bookstore and he remembers
her name.
Why I’m excited to read it: This is my most-anticipated adult book of
2020. I’ll read anything V.E. Schwab writes. Her heroes are usually a little
villainous. They’re the type of people you’d never want to meet in real life,
but you can’t look away because you’re desperately curious about how far
they’re willing to push the boundaries. They know what they want and aren’t
afraid to go after it.
Over The Woodward Wall by A. Deborah Baker
Young
Adult Fantasy
October
6, 2020
Avery is an exceptional child. Everything he does
is precise, from the way he washes his face in the morning, to the way he
completes his homework—without complaint, without fuss, without prompt.
Zib is also an exceptional child, because all
children are, in their own way. But where everything Avery does and is can be
measured, nothing Zib does can possibly be predicted, except for the fact that
she can always be relied upon to be unpredictable.
They live on the same street.
They live in different worlds.
On an unplanned detour from home to school one
morning, Avery and Zib find themselves climbing over a low stone wall into the
Up and Under—an impossible land filled with mystery, adventure and the
strangest creatures. And they must find themselves and each other if they are
to also find their way out and back to their own lives.
Why I’m excited to read it: A. Deborah Baker is a pseudonym for Seanan McGiure. I read Every Heart A Doorway earlier this year and found it imaginative, creepy, and well-written. I need to pick up more of the author’s work.
The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher
Adult
Horror
October
6, 2020
Pray they are
hungry.
Kara finds these words in the mysterious bunker
that she’s discovered behind a hole in the wall of her uncle’s house. Freshly
divorced and living back at home, Kara now becomes obsessed with these cryptic
words and starts exploring the peculiar bunker—only to discover that it holds
portals to countless alternate realities. But these places are haunted by creatures
that seem to hear thoughts . . . and the more you fear them, the stronger they
become.
Why I’m excited to read it: Who’s ready for Halloween? I am! Goodreads calls this novel
“strange, sinister, white-knuckled horror.” I tend to love books about parallel
universes, so this sounds promising. The early reviews are positive. T.
Kingfisher is a pseudonym for Ursula Vernon, who has won awards for her
children’s books and comics.
Eventide by Sarah
Goodman
Young Adult Historical Fantasy
October 6, 2020
Wheeler,
Arkansas, 1907.
When their father descends into madness after
the death of their mother, Verity Pruitt and her little sister Lilah find
themselves on an orphan train to rural Arkansas.
In Wheeler, eleven-year-old Lilah is quickly
adopted, but seventeen-year-old Verity is not. Desperate to stay close to her
sister, Verity indentures herself as a farmhand. But even charming farm boy
Abel Atchley can’t completely distract her from the sense that something is not
quite right in this little town. Strange local superstitions abound, especially
about the eerie old well at the center of the forest. The woods play tricks,
unleashing heavy fog and bone-chilling cold . . . and sometimes visions of
things that aren’t there.
But for Verity, perhaps most unsettling of all
is the revelation that her own parents have a scandalous history in this very
town. And as she tries to unearth the past, sinister secrets come with
it—secrets that someone will go to violent lengths to protect.
Why I’m excited to read it: Historical fantasy about family secrets in a small, rural
town. I’m always ready for that! This book is giving me vibes of When The Sky Fell On Splendor by Emily
Henry or The Devouring Gray by
Christine Lynn Herman. I’m hoping it’s just as entertaining as those books.
Hollowpox: The Hunt For Morrigan
Crow by
Jessica Townsend
Middlegrade
Fantasy
October
27, 2020
Morrigan Crow and her friends have survived their
first year as proud scholars of the elite Wundrous Society, helped bring down
the nefarious Ghastly Market, and proven themselves loyal to Unit 919. Now
Morrigan faces a new, exciting challenge: to master the mysterious Wretched
Arts of the Accomplished Wundersmith, and control the power that threatens to
consume her.
Meanwhile, a strange and frightening illness has
taken hold of Nevermoor, turning infected Wunimals into mindless, vicious
Unnimals on the hunt. As victims of the Hollowpox multiply, panic spreads.
There are whispers—growing louder every day—that this catastrophe can only be
the work of the Wundersmith, Ezra Squall.
But inside the walls of Wunsoc, everyone knows
there is a new Wundersmith—one who's much closer to home. With Nevermoor in a
state of fear and the truth about Morrigan threatening to get out, the city she
loves becomes the most perilous place in the world. Morrigan must try to find a
cure for the Hollowpox, but it will put her—and everyone in Nevermoor—in more
danger than she could have imagined.
Why I’m excited to read it: It’s my most-anticipated YA/MG release of
2020. This is the third book in a brilliant series. The Nevermoor novels are
hilarious, creative, escapist, completely ridiculous. I have too much fun
reading them. I want to know what Morrigan does next. If you (or your children) like the random
weirdness of Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland, check out this series.
