The Sunday Post #247
On The Blog This Week
- On Tuesday I recommend some books for Halloween.
- On Saturday there’s a book haul.
In My Reading Life
Last
week, I finished Sky In The
Deep by Adrienne
Young. Now I’m
obsessed with Viking books and want to read all of them. This novel is about a badass teen who thinks her brother was killed in battle. Years later, she’s taken
prisoner by a rival community and discovers that her brother is alive and
living happily with the enemies of her village. It’s a dramatic premise that
kept me turning pages. This is an action-packed adventure novel. I guess I’d call it
a historical thriller? It reminds me of Game Of Thrones, but tamed down for a teenage audience. Since there’s so much
focus on battles, there isn’t much room for character development. I wanted
more. I don’t feel like I ever really got to know any of the characters. Also,
the main character is a prisoner who gets into a romantic relationship with the
teenage boy who buys her from her captor. He treats her nicely, but I’m creeped
out by anything that has vibes of a master/slave romance. Technically, she’s
his property. I still really like the book, though. The action kept me on the
edge of my metaphorical seat.
I decided to give up on The Devouring Gray by Christine Lynn Herman after reading the majority of it. I know this is a popular
book, but it wasn’t holding my attention. There’s too much talking. I feel like
the first half of the book is mostly just characters explaining things to each other.
By the time they finally started to do
stuff, I was no longer invested in the outcome of the stuff. I gave up.
Right now, I’m reading The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes by Suzanne Collins. This is a
Hunger Games prequel. I like it so far. It’s interesting to see how the Games
got started. I’m also reading The
Residence: Inside The Private World Of The White House by Kate Andersen Brower,
which is about the behind-the-scenes staff who keep the White House running. I’ve
come to the conclusion that working in the White House would be simultaneously fascinating
and extremely stressful. There’s a lot happening in that place.
In The Rest Of My Life
Five things that made me happy last week:
- Pizza and s’mores.
- Readathons. I participated in Fraterfest and Dewey’s 24-hour readathon. I didn’t do great with either of them, but I loved the challenges.
- It’s time for bookish secret Santa sign ups! If you’re on the fence about participating, I encourage you to do it. It’s open internationally. There are different tiers, so you don’t have to spend a ton of money if you don’t want to. I loved secret Santa last year and am overly enthusiastic about participating again.
- I posted on Instagram a bunch last week. I’m trying to have fun with my photos and not worry about making them beautiful.
- Hanging out at the park with baby Brooklyn. That child likes to run, and run, and run, and run.

care of yourselves and be kind to each other! See you around the blogosphere!
Congratulations on taking part in the read-a-thons, AJ. I keep promising myself that I'll take part in one at some stage, but haven't got around to it... I hope you have a peaceful, happy week with more running in the park:)
ReplyDeleteI read a book during the readathon that shared a lot of New Year's traditions from Columbia...eating twelve grapes and wearing yellow underwear for good luck in the new year...cleaning your house on New Year's Eve to get rid of all the troubles from the old year...these are things I plan to do come December 31st.
ReplyDeleteHave you read the very, very old book, Viking's Dawn? It's one of the 1001 Children's Books, and it's from the 50s? but I thought it was a great read.
The Residence looks great for Nonfiction November which is fast approaching.
I will look into the Bookish Secret Santa.
Have a great week!
I hope you enjoy The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes! I just managed to get a library ebook copy, so I'm planning to read that next. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteThat header meme is hilarious and so fitting! :)
ReplyDeleteI've been meaning to read Sky In The Deep for a while, so happy to hear you enjoyed it!
Mmmm, pizza! I absolutely loved The Residence - so interesting to hear how each First Family puts their stamp on the place.
ReplyDeleteI admire your ability to push through, but am glad you gave up on Devouring Gray. You tried, right? You are getting some crazy weather out your way. Hope Brooklyn still can enjoy lots of park days. Running after her will keep you in shape.
ReplyDeleteI had fun with the Fraterfest too. It is always wonderful when I see a toddler running around in the park and enjoying it. That is so precious during these difficult times. Have a great new week ahead.
ReplyDeleteI hope your opening picture isn't prophetic! I liked the idea of the secret Santa book give-away. Before moving, I was giving away a lot of books to colleagues and friends, often picking out a book for them. It was fun and cut down on the boxes of books I had to mail. I don't nearly have enough shelves here for books (that will change).

Well that's how you'll remain fit: running after your niece LOL That and yoga! I love secret Santas! I will have a look there.
ReplyDeleteI couldn’t think of anything worse than working in the White House for the current administration.
ReplyDeleteI’m not interested in reading the Hunger Games origin story, I don’t want to have sympathy for Snow. I’m glad you are enjoying it though
Wishing you a great reading week
Hi AJ! My Fraterfest Read-a-thon also didn't go as well as planned. Life you know. That little interfering obstacle to read-a-thons.
ReplyDeleteI will have a look at secret Santa! That might be fun.
The Ballad of Songbird and Snakes, yes - I will most probably still get to it somewhere.
Hope your week will be good, here's my The Sunday Post #16
I do love the sound of your books, especially The Residence. I also like your caption at the top about being happy that 2020 is almost over!
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting my blog, and enjoy your week.
I could have sworn I was already following you on Instagram, what the what? Well, I am now!
ReplyDeleteI'm totally going to have to get the Hunger Games prequel, because I really enjoyed the series.
I love that you were posting more on Instagram! And I definitely need to sign up for Secret Santa again. Last year was actually my first time doing it and it was so much fun shopping for you!!! 2020 has been crap, so I love these things that can bring me such joy. :)

The Residence might be especially stressful this past term. I hear it's an interesting read ... I might pick it up for Nonfiction November ...
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Deweys but I always forget to tweet or anything because I'm reading. We've been enjoying walking at night with Lulu and learning more where things are in our neighborhood.
ReplyDeleteAnne - Books of My Heart This is my Sunday Post
Mmmm...you got me curious about Sky In The Deep. Ah, to be a child again and to run run run...that sense of freedom feels good at any age.:-)
ReplyDeleteI never participate in Readathons, but I do want to. I say that every year :) It never seems to work out for me...it's a timing thing and my lack of it :)
ReplyDeleteI hope you have a great week!
I loved The Residence! Her next book on first ladies is good too though not quite as well organized. I did sob a bit through Jackie Kennedy and Barbara Bush's stories. Any week with s'mores is a good week! Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI think the opening photo meme is so funny. It does seem like something awful is lurking around the corner. My Sunday Salon post
ReplyDeleteI liked Sky in the Deep too and agree with your take on it. The romantic relationship didn't really work for me either, largely for the reasons you describe. there was definitely some badassery in the combat scenes though! Glad you liked it. Bummer about The devouring gray.
ReplyDeletePizza!! :):)
That first picture is spot on, I don’t think the 1st of January is going to signify the end of COVID!
ReplyDeleteI agree with pizza and s’mores, delicious!
Yay for readathons - just the take part means you did great at them! Also it is so important to put down books that just aren't holding us.
ReplyDeleteHappy reading & a lovely week to you.
I'm glad you enjoyed the readathons. I seldom participate - usually because I don't hear about them until they are over. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteI always think about joining up with a read-a-thon and then I forget and it's too late! One day... Sorry Devouring Gray wasn't up to snuff. I like the cover, though. And I've heard good things about Sky in the Deep. I hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh that picture at the top of the page made me snort laugh!!!!
ReplyDeleteI've been so lame about participating in readathons this year. I'm glad you had fun with them though.
ReplyDelete*snorts with laughter* I nearly choked on my pie laughing at that graphic! That is just so accurate to what everyone is thinking!
ReplyDeleteGreat meme.
ReplyDeleteYour picture up there made me laugh, thanks ! The residence looks very interesting, but now, I want pizza - I'll leave you the s'mores ;)
