The Sunday Post #163

Strap on your awesome socks. It's time for The Sunday Post.

The Sunday Post is hosted by The Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to recap the past week, talk about next week, and share news. It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? is hosted by Book Date. I get to tell you what I’ve read recently.

On The Blog Last Week

On The Blog This Week

  • On Tuesday I show you some books that I hope are hidden gems.
  • On Thursday I explain how I deleted several hundred books from my wish list.
  • On Saturday I mini review some young adult books.

In My Reading Life

Last week, I finished The Last Harvest by Kim Liggett. It was very, very bizarre. Also, for a YA book, it’s pretty graphic and depressing. I would have adored it as a teen. Since I’m an adult, I mostly wondered why the main character wasn’t bothered by the brutal murders of his friends. He was shocked for about 2 seconds and then went back to business as usual.

After that, I read Psycho by Robert Bloch. You guys know this story, right? Creepy dude and his mommy run a motel and kill people? I’ve seen the movie a million times, but I had never read the novel. I liked the book, even though it’s dated and the foreshadowing is too heavy. Norman Bates is a messed up guy.

Then I attempted to read The Women In The Walls by Amy Lukavics. I tried for 3 days to get through it before I gave up. The characters are rich people who sit in their mansion and do nothing. Like, literally nothing. When Lucy's aunt goes missing, Lucy stares out the window and wonders if she should call the police. Then she goes back to doing nothing instead of calling the police. I couldn’t take it anymore.

Right now, I’m reading The Snowman by Jo Nesbø. It’s a murder mystery. The writing isn’t great, and the main character is named Harry Hole—which is unfortunate—but I’m intrigued.

In The Rest Of My Life

Five things that made me happy last week:

  1. My giveaway is over! Thank you to everyone who entered. There were 877 entries, which is the most I’ve ever gotten for a giveaway.
  2. New books!
  3. Even though I DNFed a book last week, I’m still having fun reading spooky stuff. It reminds me of the days when I only read scary books.
  4. I ate a s’more. It was delicious.
  5. Hanging out at the park with my dog. She loves the park.

  1. Ooooh, I get to be first today! Now I'm trying to think of something witty or wise... and nothing is coming to me. LOL! Congrats on getting so many entries, though. Impressive!

    1. Thanks! When I try to be witty or wise, I usually come up with nothing, too.

  2. It's funny you talk about the lack of reaction to death in YA books. I just read a discussion post about it this week over at Vicky Who Reads a Lot. S'mores really are delicious. I saw a video for S'mores french toast, and it definitely had my mouth watering for some foil packet S'mores (that's how we made them at GS camp)

    1. I’ll have to check out that discussion. I’ve now read 2 YA horror books where nobody seemed bothered by their friends getting murdered/committing suicide.

  3. I didn't love Woman in the Walls but I didn't hate it. The one character in the book almost made me DNF it because I hated her so much. The ending was a WTF moment and wasn't what I was expecting. Sorry it didn't work for you.

I LOvE S'mores! I actually just got hot tea that tastes and smells like it. I might actually have a cup today :)

Have a great week, AJ! Happy Reading! :)

  8. I've read a book by Kim Ligget and really enjoyed it. I can see why you were a little confused/taken aback by this book. It is strange that he was so blase about his friends' death!

  14. We watched Psycho for the first time several months ago and that was the first time I heard it was based on a book. I think that was the one where Alfred Hitchcock tried to buy up as many copies of it as he could so people couldn't read the ending and spoil the climax, hehe.
