In My Reading Life
I did
it, guys! I finished all 1,177 pages of A
Storm of Swords. I loved it. It’s my favorite in the series so far. I think
I’m going to hold off on reading the next book for a few months. It’s another
1000+ pager, and I’ve heard that Tyrion doesn’t have any POV chapters? If that’s
true, it’s not okay with me.
After I
finished that book, I made the brilliant decision to pick up a 500+ page book.
Yeah, my Goodreads goal is dead at this point. That big book is The Complete Stories of Flannery O’Connor.
Some of the stories are written in dialect, and those are tedious, but the
others are good.
I also
started A Thousand Perfect Notes by C.G.
Drews. So far, it’s well-written. I’m curious about where the story goes. Best
of all, it’s not a million pages long.

In The Rest Of My Life
Five
things that made me happy last week:
1. Scientists finally witnessed a star getting eaten by a black hole.
2. Despite
Instagram’s glitches, I’ve managed to keep up with my goal of posting every day in June.
3. I’m
trying a new kind of allergy medicine for my dog. She has skin allergies and is
absolutely disgusting right now. I hope it works quickly because it’s expensive
and she's . . . unpleasantly greasy.
4. Speaking of unpleasantly greasy things, a Fox
News host accidentally called Trump a dictator. I LOLed stupidly hard.
5. If you
live in the UK or have gobs of money to spend on shipping, you should check out
the Book Voyage Subscription Box. If I wasn’t spending all my money on allergy
treatments for a dog, I’d subscribe in a heartbeat. Every month, you get books
and food from a different country. Books and food! Also, check out the TED Talk
by a woman who read a book from every country in the world.

You did it again! You made me cackle. This time it was the cartoon. Yes! And that black hole thing, if only I was still teaching astronomy. What a moment! If someone looked at the books I read, they would see how much I hate adulting.
ReplyDeleteGood links you shared, so thanks!
ReplyDeleteHope your dog gets better soon. I had a dog who passed recently, and had the greasy skin allergy. Turned out she was allergic to flea dirt, had a couple on her which we treated, but the allergy remained. She was said to have a weakened immune system from an underlying terminal cause. I had a special medicated shampoo from the vet to use every week to relieve itchiness. Otherwise I have no good advice for you on this :(
I haven't read Martin's series (I know, me and one other person it seems like) but congrats on tackling such a huge book. My daughter watched some of the tv show and told me I wouldn't like it, lol, due to violence, rape, etc. There comes a time when the adult child "parents" the parent.
Have a great week!
Congrats on finishing the book - Martin's books are monstrously huge, but so good and enjoyable!
ReplyDeleteI hope that the meds will work on your dog.
Also, great links to share - especially the one about the star being eaten!
Hooray for finishing Storm of Swords! But the next book with no Tyrion POV? Not acceptable. Tyrion is everything. That book subscription box sounds way cool. I just recently cancelled my only subscription box and am browsing for another so maybe...
ReplyDeleteTanya @ Girl Plus Books
The universe is amazing. So vast that I can't imagine. My dog has the skin allergies too. I have him on daily pills and yes, they are expensive. I also have a shampoo for once a week. It makes me wonder if it's something in their food as so many dogs are experiencing these allergies now.
ReplyDeleteMy Sunday Post
Congrats on finishing Storm of Swords! It's my favorite by far of the five published books :) And yes, it's true that AFFC doesn't have any Tyrion chapters; it takes place concurrently with the fifth book, ADWD, which will have the other POVs. You can actually google for some reading guides that treat AFFC and ADWD as one massive book and have you skip between the two so you can read all the usual POVs in roughly chronological order. I guess then you could technically say you're reading a 2k page book? 😂
ReplyDelete"Unpleasantly greasy" is never a good thing.
ReplyDeleteNow I'm wondering about starting Storm of Swords this summer, if you liked it best so far. And I fooled my GR challenge by setting it super low, so I can afford to wade through a monster like that! I'm telling you, low expectations are the key.
Have a great week!
Ooh yay for Storm of Swords. That one's probably my favorite too, either that or A Dance with Dragons- it's a toss up. And can you imagine the heat that FOX News host probably took? Ha love it. :) And just to add my .02 to what JJ said in her comment, yes you can read 4 and 5 concurrently- I've never done it but I think it would be ideal, actually? Either that or very confusing. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat post...Oh those email scammers...I get so many odd ones too. Good luck with your dog's allergy. My cat has a skin allergy. I've been lucky as my vet gives her a shot every few months and it helps her. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteYay for finishing A Storm of Swords! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. But yes, I can unfortunately confirm that A Feast For Crows has no Tyrion POV...it only focuses on half of the characters from what I can remember, and then you get to catch up with the rest of them in the following book.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week! :)
1,000 pages? Girl, girl, you are winning. And I apparently missed Fox News, I need to laugh (and then cry at the state of this country).
ReplyDeleteCongrats for finishing A Storm of Swords! It's my favourite in the series too. It's true, A Feast for Crows doesn't have Tyrion chapters. I thought it would be my least favourite book because of that, but the thing is, I enjoyed it. It has Cersei chapters and those made the whole book interesting for me. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteMy Sunday Post
I'm in awe that you finished A Storm of Swords! That's quite the page count and I'm usually not brave enough to tackle something quite that heavy. Hope the allergy meds work quickly I had a dog with similar sounding issues so can relate to the unpleasantness of it all! Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteIt's been a really good week for you - what ambitious reading goals! I hope the coming week is a fabulous one:))
ReplyDeleteI have to admit that one of the biggest reasons I have never picked up the GoT series is because those books are just so damn big. I tried the first book, but because I had already started the show, I just couldn't get into it. I also lol'd at the dictator line. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on finishing that beast of a book! Haha! Off to check out those Pride Month recs! It's hard finding good diverse reads since I stick mainly to fantasy. Hahahaha at Trump being called a dictator! How did I miss that?? XD Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteYay for finishing A Storm of Swords!! I never finished book one. I think I may try again now that I've seen the show. It will be a lot easier for me to keep track of everything.
ReplyDeleteMy god has allergies too but isn't greasy just licking every part of her body till the hair falls off. It's gross and none of the allergy meds we have tried work. I hope your dog gets better with the new meds. Have a great and ungreasy week!
ReplyDeleteMary
I love the idea of the Book Voyage subscription box. Sadly, I don’t live in the UK.
ReplyDeleteDon’t worry about your GR goals. You can always pump up your numbers with children’s books. Do it. It will make you feel good. And then you can keep reading 500+ page books without a care.
I struggle with my GR goal too. This year I set it for 150, because I am focusing on my own book, but still want to read for pleasure and not just for research. But my four year old loves these slim chapter books about these fairies, Rainbow Magic or something, and so we have a bunch from the library and we could in theory read probably 2-3 per day. So, I upped my goal to 200. We'll see how it works out.
ReplyDeleteI love that yu have a post about Pride reads. I did a post listing some non-fiction titles. I have read some, but not all. And the ones I included but have not read were recommended to me by people who know how important this issue is for me. If you have a chance, let me know if you've read any. Happy Reading!

That e-card graphic made me LOL. My dad used to pay me about ten to twenty-five cents per work shirt ironed. I think me and my brother got allowance too. I like how you took some book recs and bought them. I added The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns to my TBR for this year. I have heard of this book you read. I haven't read The Bridge to Terabithia but wonder how ppl liked the modern movie version?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the birthday wishes for my tween. She was totally spoiled with three celebrations this month.
I hate it when the vet prescribes ointments and skin creams for animals. They get it everywhere lick it and it is just a pain. I hope your dog's skin clears up quickly. Do you think she could be stressed by the loss of your other dog? Congrats on getting through a GOT book. I do want to read the series but it is a bit intimidating. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteWow, finishing a 1000+ page book is definitely an accomplishment! A greasy dog. That does sound rather unpleasant lol. And now I'm off to check out some of those things that made you happy!
ReplyDeleteI had always been fascinated with the black whole, that was one hell of a view! I don't think I'll...ever read George R.R. Martin's books ahaha. Too popular/complicated for me, I don't' really like book with such a huge reception, turns me off for some reason.
ReplyDeleteI hope the rash passes quickly! *fingers crossed* I also LOL'd hard at the dictator comment. Happy reading (even if it's a longun)!!
ReplyDeleteWow, congrats on finishing Storm of Swords, that is one massive book! I think I would have cracked up laughing about the dictator comment too. :) Hope you have a great week ahead and thank you for stopping by my blog.
ReplyDeleteStorm of Swords is my favourite book...I loved it! Yeah A Feast For Crows misses out a few MCs POV but it just introduce Cersei's POV which is fun and we get more Sam!
ReplyDeleteStorm of Swords is an amazing book! Congrats on finishing. I hope you have a great week and thanks for stopping by on my blog.
ReplyDeleteAJ I hope your furbaby gets better soon. It's terrible when they are sick. I've got a blue (aka grey) staffy who gets skin diseases so easy!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to hear your thoughts on Paperfury's book.
I really want to start reading The Game of Thrones series but I'd probably need a week each book with that kind of page count.
Angelica @ Paperback Princess
Yay on the Game of Thrones book. I loved that series but now it's the long, long, long ... wait for more. Book Voyage looks fab.
ReplyDeleteWell, Game of Thrones...I ended up loving the first book, though I was confused by all the characters and such, it did hit me in a good spot by the end. Now...oh man, I am having a lot of trouble getting through Clash of Kings and I'm second guessing myself.
ReplyDeletesherry @ fundinmental Sunday Memes
Love that "accidental" of Fox & Friends.
ReplyDeleteWhenever I see a news clip from that source, though, I usually just keep on scrolling. Unless it reveals something interesting and accidentally honest.
Enjoy your week, and thanks for sharing.
Wow, books and food. That does sound like a great combination. Dog allergies suck. Who am I kidding? People allergies aren't fun either. Right now Booker T is licking his poor feet raw and we have to wipe them off every time he comes inside. It can be tricky finding the right formula so I hope you find what works soon. It's great that you finished that book. Maybe I'll start some day - and maybe he'll finish the series someday too. No Tyrion POV's? That has to be downright criminal!
ReplyDeleteI'm inspired by that TEDx talk! My WorldReads is slowly conquering the globe, but I am starting to worry I might run out of books!
ReplyDeleteWow! It sounds like you had a great week!
ReplyDeletehttps://shoshireads.weebly.com/home/its-monday-what-are-you-reading3003261
Way to go on finishing A Storm of Swords! I haven't read that series.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week!
That is a lot of pages. Goodness!
ReplyDeleteGood job on your reading and Instagram goals! I have been posting to Instagram daily (more or less) for the past 3 years, and now it's a habit. I'm glad I've done it because I have tons of images I can post to my blog! Those GoT books are so long. I wish I was more into fantasy. I am in a book reading slump. :(
ReplyDeleteI hope your dog's medicine will work! Congrats on posting every day on Instagram, I can't manage once a week anymore... That's something I need to change :)
ReplyDeleteYour new feature sounds intriguing, I'll have to check it out!
Have a wonderful week!
George R.R. Martin's books are on my "One Day I Will Read" list because they are so daunting! But finishing that many pages is definitely an accomplishment!! Way to go :)
ReplyDeleteMegan - Ginger Mom and the Kindle Quest
You need to find a bunch of really short books to use to catch up at GoodReads. Those monsters are average killers. I do hope you enjoy the short stories though. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on finishing the book. My weekly updates
ReplyDeleteSorry about your dog! We have a little pup who thankfully is super healthy, but he's also very young. I've been meaning to read a George Martin book, but have yet to. Hopefully some day. Thanks for stopping by and have a marvelous week!
ReplyDeleteTressa @ Wishful Endings
That post about Trump being a dictator was the best! Thanks for giving me a laugh today.
ReplyDeleteNicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction
I like the idea of your new feature. Can't believe you picked up another massive book right after A Storm of Swords-you must be a glutton for punishment. I'm looking forward to your review of A Thousand Perfect Notes. I enjoy Cait's blog but I'm not sure the book will be my kind of thing. Well done on keeping up with your insta goals, I only post once in a blue moon. I still don't really get it. I think I must be getting old.
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome we were able to witness the black hole eating a star and that you were able to post everyday, I am way more comfortable with Twitter then Instagram. I am photographically challenged lol.
