January Currently . . .

It’s been a long time since I’ve done one of these. Here’s what I’ve been up to in January.

I’m Currently . . .

Reading: Sex with Kings: 500 Years of Adultery, Power, Revelry, and Revenge by Eleanor Herman and I See Reality: Twelve Short Stories about Real Life. Two books with very long titles.

Eating: Nothing yummy. All those people who claim that diet food tastes good are liars. Nachos taste good. Chocolate cake tastes good. Lettuce tastes like disappointment.

Photographing: The last photo I took was a random one of my dog under my desk. I’ve been trying to get some pictures of squirrels because there are tons of them around here. They don’t stay still long enough for photos. Especially when the dogs notice them.

Watching: Squirrel sex. I’m not intentionally watching it. I’m trying to take photos of squirrels, but they keep jumping each other’s bones right in front of me. Dirty critters. I’m trying to make nature photography, not squirrel porn.

Watching II: Children’s movies. They’re less depressing than the real world. In the past week, I’ve seen parts of A Bug’s Life, The Incredibles, Frozen, Hercules, and Mulan.

Getting rid of: Books. I don’t like having more books than shelf space. I’m thinking about taking a giant box of books to the used bookstore. Then, the store will give me money or credits for more books. It’s an endless cycle.

Exercising: I’m doing well with Couch to 5K. Back in November, I quit at week 7 because I was traveling, then I got bronchitis, then it was the holidays, and excuses, excuses. I started over. I’m on week 3 right now.

Learning: That I need better shoes. Have you ever tried walking big, enthusiastic dogs on icy sidewalks? It’s like figure skating, but less elegant and more deadly.

What did you do in January?

  1. Squirrel Sex!!! That made me laugh. We watched The Incredibles with the kids this weekend. And yeah Nachos are way better than healthy food.

  2. Lol squirrel sex. I don't think I've ever seen that?

And yes, diet foods are the worst. Lettuce tastes like water. Do you like spinach any better?

I currently have more books than shelf space and I've given away all the books I planned on, so I think I just need to give in and buy a new shelf.

    1. I’m trying really hard not to get a new shelf. I can manage the book chaos, I swear! I like spinach about as much as I like lettuce. They’re both “meh.”

    Preach, sister.

  4. Healthy food tastes horrible. Nothing tastes as good as pizza, cheese crisps, Lindt chocolate, cake...*sigh*

I have no shelf space and no room for new bookcases. I'm trading some books and the rest go to charity shops but I keep buying more! Gah.

    1. I have the same problem. I get rid of books, but then I just get more to replace them. A never-ending cycle.

  5. Oh, my goodness AJ I can relate to so much of your January! Well, except the squirrel sex-lol! I tried to convince myself that diet food tastes good, but I knew I was lying to myself so just gave up on that piece of 'alternative fact'! ;) I have a hard time getting rid of books. I always think that I will want to read them at some point. I highly recommend Brooks brand shoes! I have plantar fasciitis and they have made a difference in my ability to jog without too much pain afterwards. I don't know if they would help on ice, but they will be comfortable! Good luck on finishing your Couch to 5K, I really liked that program. Have a great weekend!

    1. Thanks! I’ll look into those shoes. Also, “alternative facts” is my new favorite phrase. It’s useful for whenever I want to say something stupid.

  6. One of my friends just had knee surgery, so I did a quick sweep of my shelves and dropped a half dozen books off at her house. YA books go straight to the classroom of course (where I also need more shelving), but I don't have much reason to hang on to adult books at my house.

Careful on the ice--I'm two weeks in to recovery from spraining my ankle. And not that I was exercising, but it has occurred to me several times that even if I wanted to, I couldn't right now, which perversely makes me long to be able to take a good walk.

    1. I hope your friend gets better soon. I haven’t fallen on the ice yet—maybe this is helping me learn to balance better? I’m a highly uncoordinated person.

  7. Hahahaha the squirrels! XD That is hilarious! I'm really interested in the Eleanor Herman book you're reading. I didn't love her YA book, but I knew she wrote non-fiction too so I can't wait to see what you think of it! Good luck with couch to 5k! I just started blogilates!

    1. I didn’t like the structure of Sex with Kings, but I learned a lot of stuff about royal mistresses.

  8. I love your sense of humor! I don't think I have ever noticed squirrels having sex but they are all over the place so it has to be happening. I have been trying to be good with my diet as well and am eating a lot of lettuce...and donuts when they are in the kitchen at work. I am so weak.

    1. Your squirrels are more considerate than mine. Mine don’t mind gettin’ it on in public.

  9. Omg, squirrel porn x) Must be that time of the year for them, lol
Glad to see you appreciate Pixar and Disney as much as I do! All the movies you listed are great.

In January, I did a lot of readathon-ing...I really need to exercise more, it's getting really bad. :/ My job is sedentary and reading is sedentary, so it's not a good combination. I can't wait for spring so I can go on more walks and jogging.

    1. I did a lot of readathoning, too. DAReadathon was awesome. I wanted to do Diverseathon, but I didn’t think I could commit to it. I didn’t want to sign up and then barely read anything.

  10. I See Reality sounds like it could be quite a good read... Look forward to your thoughts on that.

Love your humour, especially about the diet food and nature photography. Haha!

Animated films, particularly Disney and such, are amazing escapist viewing. I see why you've been turning to such films.

I hope you have a lovely February... Kind of crazy that January is nearly over.

    1. Yes, the people here in the US are in desperate need of escapist entertainment. Things are a bit crazy right now. Disney movies and books and squirrels have been working pretty well for me.

  11. Inadvertently watching squirrel sex... oh the excitement, AJ! LOL I hope you'll be able to get some pics of those critters when they're not having sex :D
I could never do the couch to 5K thing, I really hate running. I do need to get back into an exercise routine, though. I've put on a ton of weight since I quit smoking last year.
Have a wonderful week ahead and happy reading.

    1. I hate running, too, but Couch to 5K isn’t very hard in the beginning. I’ll really start hating it toward the end.
