My Favorite Historical Fiction Books Ever

This post contains affiliate links. I earn a commission from qualifying purchases.

If I had to choose a favorite genre, I'd pick historical fiction. History is weird, and beautiful, and scary. There are so many interesting stories an author can tell. I learn something new every time I read a historical novel.

Picking my favorite historical fiction book is impossible. I don't have a favorite! I have a million favorites! No one wants to read a blog post about my million favorites! So, I narrowed it down to 10 books that live in my head rent free. I don't know if they're my all-time favorites, but I think about them way too often.

Best Books By Black Authors

Between 1950 and 2018, ninety-five percent of traditionally published books were written by white people. I'm not sure if publishing has gotten more diverse since this study was done, but I suspect not. Let's encourage change. Here are ten of my favorite books by Black authors. I hope you love them as much as I did.

Happy Valentine's Day. I'm In Love With A Sentient Object.

Okay, let me explain. Last month, I read over 200 "Best Books Of 2024" lists, and I noticed a trend. There are quite a few books about humans who love . . . stuff. Sentient objects. Literally any random thing. I had no idea this genre existed. Of course, I ended up in a Google rabbit hole that got deep and weird. My search history needs to be cleansed with bleach and fire.

I'm not here to judge anybody's love life, but as an EMT, it's my duty to warn you that not every object belongs in your butt. Choose your love interests carefully. Some of them will not love you back.

Here are some sentient object love stories I discovered during my . . . um . . . crucial scientific research. These are all real books. I have not read any of them. I don't plan on reading any of them. I just wanted to share because it's almost Valentine's Day! It's time to celebrate love!

What Is Literary Fiction? + Book Recommendations!

This post contains affiliate links. I earn a commission from qualifying purchases.

If you have an MFA in writing or literature, then you're very familiar with literary fiction. It was the only thing I was allowed to read and write in school. Once I left school, I learned that the majority of readers have no idea what "literary fiction" means. Aren't all books literature?

Let's demystify it. What do pretentious MFA people mean by "literary fiction"? Here are a few traits that will help you spot a literary book in the wild:

  • Prioritizes artistic merit over entertainment value.
  • Prioritizes character development over plot.
  • Focuses on the psychology of characters.
  • Explores motivation, morality, identity, relationships, or societal issues.
  • Does not rely on genre tropes.
  • Often features a writing style that is experimental or draws attention to itself.

Let's not lie to ourselves. A lot of literary fiction is dense, serious, pompous, and depressing. I love it, though. It's one of my favorite genres because it makes me see the world in new ways. Sometimes I'm stunned by how an author puts a complex emotion or problem into words. It makes me feel less alone.

If you're new to literary fiction, here are some books that will ease you into the genre. These novels straddle the line between mainstream commercial fiction and Very Serious Literature.
