In My Reading Life
I read Butts: A Backstory by Heather Radke. I bought this book because I like the title and cover. I didn't have high expectations for the insides. I should have had more faith in the book. It's super interesting!
Butts is a nonfiction book about butts. Mostly, women's butts. Mostly, the clothes that women use to cover their butts. It's a deep dive into culture and fashion history. How (and why) do different silhouettes go in and out of style? How do women use clothing, diet, and Buns of Steel workouts to achieve the butt of their dreams?
You can't discuss the history of butts without talking about racism, sexism, cultural appropriation, and pop culture. In addition to clothing styles, the author explores eugenics and the quest to define the "perfect" butt. She also talks about the influence of celebrities like Sir Mix-A-Lot, JLo, and Miley Cyrus.
I love this book because it forced me to think about a topic I've never really considered. I thought butts were just . . . butts. Heather Radke proves they are much more complicated.
In The Rest Of My Life
I've been playing a videogame called Planet Zoo rather than doing anything productive. I'm building a festive winter Christmas zoo. It's nowhere near finished, so here are some random screenshots with the unfinished bits cropped out.

Merry Christmas ya filthy animal!

It's fun to create, and a holiday zoo sounds quite lovely. I hope you will have a large butterfly area---my favorite animal.
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed your read this week!
I understand Sir Mix a Lot and JLo, but I had no idea that Miley Cyrus impacted the culture of butts. I want your zoo to be a real place. Have fun building it!
ReplyDeleteAll I know is my butt is too big (like the rest of me).
ReplyDeleteI like your zoo, glad none has been eaten (yet)
Wishing you and yours a very merry Christmas
Merry Christmas! Enjoying a game is a great way to celebrate!
ReplyDeletePlanet Zoo looks like a fun game! I hope it's relaxing and everyone continues to stay safe on the bridge. 😉
ReplyDeleteThe Butt book looks good! Sir Mix-a-Lot was the song when I was in college. My college roommate and I had the beginning talking part of the song on our answering machine until my mom told me to take it off because it was too long and back then we had all the long distance charges still, lol. Planet Zoo looks neat, I might have to see if I can play it, although I only have a Nintendo Switch to play games on. Have a nice holiday!

DeleteWell Planet Zoo might remind you of what you see at your work (wolf, bison...).
ReplyDeleteThat game looks so fun! Happy Holidays Aj!
ReplyDeleteButts sounds interesting, especially with the fashion, appropriation, etc.
ReplyDeleteHow fun that you have an alternate world to hang out in; I am sure it is much more pleasant that our current state of affairs!
