Book Cover Design Trends: Horror Flowers

In honor of spring, let's look at flowers! Horror flowers, of course.

Have you noticed that book cover designs go through trends? One book becomes popular, and then every book copies its cover? We get whole shelves of books that look alike.

Right now, creepy horror plants are on trend. Let's check out 10 of my . . . um . . . favorites. (Calling them favorites is wrong. These are disgusting, friends. I hate them with passion.)

Creepy Horror Plants

A portrait of a teenage boy with blond hair and a brown suit. The portrait has been slashed. Flowers are growing through the slash marks.

Illustration of a blond woman. There are pink flowers around her head and growing out of her eye sockets.

A woman shown from the back. There are vines with spines draped over her shoulder.

Close up of an Asian woman's face. She has flowers in her mouth.

A living hand reaches for a skeleton hand. They are both wrapped in vines.

A white woman's body covered in dirt and surrounded by pink flowers.

Illustration of a woman with thick, dark hair. She's wrapped in sunflowers.

A hand with thick veins holding orange flowers underwater.

Illustration of a white hand with mushrooms growing out of it.

Two people holding hands. Their arms are wrapped in vines.

What's your favorite book cover design trend?

  4. Creepy horror plants on covers are *defo* in! I feel like I see more and more of them each time I go to bookstagram, lol. I can't deny that the covers are absolutely stunning though and despite not reading horror, these covers make me want to add all of these books to my physical shelf 😂 Great picks!

  6. Pretty covers for scary stories - I love the juxtaposition there. When I saw the title of your post, the first book I thought of was Leno's.

  9. Well, I haven't noticed but then this book covers don't exactly draw me in... It's not exactly horror, but has elements in it, but I have really enjoyed Timothy Egan's "A Fever in the Heartland"

  10. I love the idea of horror flowers, great list. I haven't read any of these but I do notice when book cover trends start up. I feel like with romance especially, the covers are all cartoonish for the past few years.
