In My Reading Life

I finally read a Rose Tremain historical fiction book and now completely understand the hype. It was excellent! If I didn't already own a million unread books, I'd buy the author's whole backlist.

The book was The Gustav Sonata. It follows a family over three different timelines. One timeline is in the 1930s, another is in the 1950s, and the third is in the 1990s. The main character, Gustav, is growing up in Switzerland with WWII looming over his childhood. His father died when Gustav was young, and a large chunk of the book is Gustav attempting to uncover what happened to his dad. His father was a police officer during the war. He lost his job when he refused to deport Jewish refugees who crossed the border illegally to escape from the Nazis. Gustav's father's unemployment was the starting point in a series of bad events that happened to the family.

I couldn't put this book down because the characters are so complicated! There are no good guys or bad guys in here. Both of Gustav's parents are human garbage, but I still have (some) empathy for them because they're trying. They're trying to survive poverty and illness and the fear of their country being invaded by Nazis. They're terrible people in a terrible situation.

I love the 1930s timeline and the 1950s timeline, but I struggled with the 1990s timeline. It feels directionless. I think Gustav is too passive of a character for my tastes. I know he's supposed to represent Switzerland and neutrality. He observes everything that happens around him without passing judgment or getting overly involved. That's fine when there's a bunch of drama happening, but in the 1990s timeline, most of the dramatic characters are dead. We're left with bland, neutral Gustav. It's not very interesting to read.

I enjoyed the majority of this book and am looking forward to the author's other stuff.

From one war book to another:

I read Saga, Volume 1 by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples. It's a science fiction graphic novel about a family that's trying to escape from a galactic war. The main characters were both soldiers in the war, but they fought on opposite sides. When one of their governments discovers that the characters have had a baby, it sends a few hitmen (hit aliens?) to track down the parents and kidnap the baby.

If books had movie-style ratings, this one would be rated R. It's gory! Blood everywhere. There are characters with their intestines hanging out. There are alien sex clubs. Even the spiders have boobs and clothing-optional lifestyles. It's a lot.

I understand the point of the sex and violence because it creates a hilarious juxtaposition with the young family. The parents grew up surrounded by death and exploitation. They're kind of numb to it. So they're having normal domestic squabbles while awful things happen around them. It's actually really funny. And slightly relatable. You have to feed and diaper your kid, even when the world is falling apart.

I love the characters because they're snarky and opinionated. Their world is bizarre in an intriguing way. There's a pedophilia / sex trafficking plotline that I disliked because it feels stereotypical, but I'm still interested enough in the story that I want to know what happens next.

In The Rest Of My Life

Five things that made me happy last week:

  1. I finished my Secret Santa shopping and mailed my gifts. I'm excited for my person to get it. I hope she loves all the books I sent her.
  2. My Christmas decorations are finally up. I don't think we've ever waited this long to decorate. But, decorating happened!
  3. I walked around at night and looked at everyone else's decorations. Other people have way more motivation than me.
  4. Sticking with the Christmas theme: movies! I watched The Naughty Nine, which is cute. It's a heist story about nine naughty kids who attempt to break into Santa's workshop and steal the gifts they didn't get. Life lessons are learned.
  5. I didn't vote in the Goodreads Choice Awards because I've read exactly 0 books that came out in 2023, but a group of BookTubers made a playlist where they review every book in every category. I'm working my way through all these videos.

  1. I've been using Canva constantly to make my designs and it's such a fantastic site to make your own designs! I haven't really voted in the Goodreads Awards because they always have books that I haven't read yet. So, I feel like I wouldn't bring much to the table when it comes to the awards. Hope you have a great week!

  2. Oh I love Saga! I've read up to Volume 10 now, I think, and it's so good but also so heartwrenching! I feel so many feelings with this series. It's a lot of sex and gore, yes, and a lot to take, but I hope you enjoy it if you decide to continue.

Thank you for sharing the Youtube playlist of the Goodreads books, I've saved the playlist!

  3. Like you, I feel like I didn't read many of the Goodreads books that were finalists, but I voted for the few that I read and liked. My neighborhood has some really great (read: huge, tacky, wonderful) decorations up so it's been fun to wander at night and see them.

  4. We used to have a Happiness Committee at work and one of the things we did every year was a Secret Santa. It was so much fun! A few years ago our small company was dumped into a huge company, so, no more fun. lol

  5. Ahh, Saga. I keep meaning to reread/catch up and read the new stuff, but there's so much out there.

Hope you have a good week!

  6. I'm adding the Naughty Nine to my list -- sounds fun. I'm still only about half-way through the Christmas decorations that I intend and wasn't that much to start with. I'll see if I can get it done today. Otherwise, I might decide to be content with what I have.

  7. Glad to see your latest reads were good ones. I read one GR winner and have an ARC for another (the kid reviewed it for me). I read a bunch of nominees though. I do think people are a little to over the top about the GR awards. Naughty Nine sounds precious!

  8. Both those books sound intriguing, even if the last segment of the first one was flawed.
    Have a great holiday!

  9. We have not decorated yet. We seem to wait as long as possible and last year we got our tree on the 24th! I actually read and enjoyed some of the Goodreads choices which usually is not true.

  10. I only voted in a couple of the Goodreads categories! We also just put our tree up this week, which we almost immediately regretted because Henry just wanted to keep turning the lights on and off.

  11. You've had a busy week. I always love looking at everyone else's decorations. Some people are so creative. I hope you have a great week!

  12. Thank you for the videos! And I love seeing Christmas decorations at night too!

  13. I voted in the categories where I had read books. I always like to see how things come out...even though my favorites rarely win.

I didn't realize you were celebrating your tenth blogoversary! Hurray!

  14. Happy Tenth Blogoversary! Glad you liked Saga! I keep meaning to try it!

  15. I've never read a Rose Tremain historical fiction book, but happy to hear it was a hit. Happy 10th blogoversary! I haven't watched anything in a while but I do want to watch the Virgin River Christmas special and The Diplomate. You haven't read any books that released in 2023? The GR Choice Awards didn't have great selections IMO anyhow. Have a wonderful week!

  16. I read a few volumes of Saga and did think it was a bit much gory wise but I know everyone loves it. And our tree and stuff are up now too. I was starting to wonder if we'd get to it!

  17. Happy Tenth Blogaversary! I love Canva too and will be checking out your post. Have a great week ahead.

  18. I don't use Canva enough to be good at it, but I really need to learn. Happy blogiversary! I'm still working on decorations and sending out cards. What gets done, gets done. Hope you have a great week.

  21. Happy Anniversary! Thanks for the Canva tips. I use it but am not very savvy at all. I LOVE the Saga graphic novels. Wait until you meet Ghus if you haven't already. I also love Lying Cat. I can get the monthly comic books free from Hoopla so have stayed up to date that way instead of waiting for the bind ups. Hope you are enjoying the holidays. I feel like they are killing me this year 😂

  22. I had read very few of the Goodreads Choice nominees. So I didn't vote either. I'll admit that I did enjoy the few I had read and see how they were among the nominees. I'm generally trying to ignore Christmas this year and so far it is working. Come see my week here. Happy reading and happy holidays!

  23. Thanks for the Saga reminder, it's been sitting on my TBR for quite some time.

  24. I haven't heard of that book. Hope you have a great week!

  25. While we have had our Christmas decorations up for a few weeks, we still haven't watched our first Christmas movie, sadness!! Have a great week. Cindy-cindysbookcorner

  26. I read the first volume of Saga years ago and I think I might have read volume 2, as well. But I just never clicked with it so I didn't continue. It was different for sure! I haven't watched a single holiday movie. I need to get on that.

  27. I saw your banner about sowing the seeds of anarchy. Hit close to home, living here in Florida. My motivation was a little off in decorating too, but I got most of the inside done and some on the outside. Right now, I'm cleaning because company is coming to town. Happy holidays.

  28. I like your library picture! I didn't even look at the GoodReads Awards. I usually at least look but I can only think of maybe one or two books I read that were published this year. I'm happy drowning in the backlists. Enjoy your week and happy holidays!

  29. Yay for Christmas decorations! Better late than never. :)

  30. I didn't get my outside decorations out this year. Just didn't have time with watching a friend's dog for so long. I voted in the Goodreads awards based on books I had read, wanted to read, or had heard good things about. Don't you love when you find a new author and all you want to do is dive into all their backlist, but our TBR is already out of control? Happens to me all the time! lol Have a good week!
