The Sunday Post is a chance to
recap the past week, talk about next week, tell you what I’m reading, and share
news. It’s hosted by The Caffeinated Book Reviewer, Readerbuzz, and Book Date.
The Sunday Post #269
On The Blog This Week
- On Wednesday I list the April book releases I’m excited to read.
In My Reading Life
Last week was
not great for reading. I finished exactly 0 books. I read the majority of At The Wolf’s Table by
Rosella Postorino, but it wasn’t holding my attention, so I set it aside for
now. The plot is nonexistent, and the characters are kind of bland. I am
interested in the book’s topic, though! It’s about a group of young women who
work as Hitler’s food tasters. They have to taste the food he’s about to eat
and then wait to see if they get poisoned. The book is based on real events,
which is cool, but I was struggling to stay invested in the story. That’s a “me”
problem, not the book’s problem. I think I need a book that’s plot-driven and
less depressing right now.
I
picked up Cemetery Boys by Aiden
Thomas. It’s exactly what I need! It’s fast-paced, unique, and funny. It’s
young adult paranormal fiction about a teenage boy who wants to be a brujo and
summon the dead. His family won’t let him become a brujo, so of course he does
the ceremony behind their backs and accidentally summons the ghosts of his
school’s recently murdered bad boy. Chaos ensues. It’s great.
I
also started The Good People by
Hannah Kent. I love Hannah Kent’s writing style. It’s atmospheric and
descriptive. Her other book, Burial Rites,
is one of my all-time-favorite historical fiction books. The Good People is about a village in 1800s Ireland. The villagers
believe that fairies have kidnapped a child and replaced him with a changeling.
In The Rest Of My Life
Five
things that made me happy last week:
- Happy Easter! I hope the bunny brings you lots of candy.
- (I know for sure the bunny will bring me lots of candy.)
- I ran 11 miles without stopping. That’s the farthest I’ve ever run. Go, me!
- I got my first COVID shot. My only side effect so far is a painful arm. I was supposed to go back to full time work last week, but my boss let me delay my start date so I could be partially vaccinated before I’m forced to interact with a billion people. That’s nice.
- I watched Blown Away on Netflix. It’s a competition show about glass blowing, and it made me wish I was good at art. The glass blowers make beautiful stuff. I recommend this series if you’re interested in art.

Take
care of yourselves and be kind to each other. See you around the blogosphere!
Cemetery Boys and The Good People both sound like great reads. Sorry that At The Wolf's Table wasn't working for you. Yay for getting your first vaccine! I hope you have a great Easter, AJ!
ReplyDeleteRunning 11 miles is amazing! And yay for getting your first shot of vaccine! I am still waiting for mine.
ReplyDeleteI didn’t get any candy:(
ReplyDeleteI hate that I still haven’t read Burial Rites despite repeatedly promising myself I will soon.
Happy Easter, Wishing you a great reading week
I love the sound of Cemetery Boys and Blown Away sounds fabulous - just my sort of TV viewing:)). Thank you so much for your recommendation and I hope you have a really great week!
ReplyDeleteSeeing that photo of that (scary) Easter bunny reminds me of seeing a little movie they made of the Easter bunny visiting my daughter-in-law at her home when she was a little girl. She was terrified.
ReplyDeleteEleven miles at one go? Good for you.
And happy news about getting your vaccine. At least your state isn't opened up widely like ours is. It's frustrating to go places and see lots of folks with no masks. Foolish people.
I'd love to find a good book that's mood-boosting. I'm on the lookout.
Yay! Congrats on getting your first vaccine! You are halfway there! I love seeing more and more people get the vaccine. And I'm glad you have very few side effects!
ReplyDeleteHappy Easter! Congrats on the vaccine.
ReplyDeleteI spent about an hour last summer while on the Isle of Wight watching glass blowers make vases in a workshop... It's oddly entrancing, lol.
Way to go on running 11 miles! That's a long long way. And also your vaccine. I ran two marathons in my life but that was a couple decades ago! So now I just bicycle & play tennis. Too old otherwise, ha.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you got your first vaccine. Wow on the 11 miles. My daughter got an Easter basket from the ex and is eating candy. Good luck on the back to work. I'm pretty happy staying at home.
ReplyDeleteAnne - Books of My Heart This is my Sunday Post
I read half of Cemetery Boys and then the library checkout expired and returned itself. I should request it again to finish it up. My Easter Sunday Salon post
ReplyDeleteHa love that first graphic! :) And happy Easter! Hope you had a nice one. Yum bunnies. Chocolate ones, I mean. Obviously.
ReplyDelete11 miles! Wow, I'd die.
Congrats on the vaccine!
I haven't heard of those books but then such is usually the case for me.
ReplyDeleteHappy Easter to you~
I am curious about Hannah Kent's books, so I might need to try this one. Thanks for sharing. Enjoy your books (and candy!). Here are my WEEKLY UPDATES
ReplyDeleteI've been seeing Cemetery Boys around. I hope you continue to enjoy it. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteHi Aj, I just got my first vaccine shot too! And I also got the painful arm and nothing else. But I've never even got close to running 11 miles without stopping, so that's where the similarities end :)
ReplyDeleteWow, 11 MILES?? Did you listen to music or an audiobook?
ReplyDeleteWHOO HOO! You go running girl! You are almost at the half marathon distance. Good for you! Glad you didn't suffer too much from your vaccine, and I hope it gives you some peace of mind. I totally have a creepy bunny picture like that from my youth.
ReplyDeleteI hope you had a great Easter. I'm going to have to check out that Blown Away show!
ReplyDeleteI adore Cemetery Boys so much. Glad you are enjoying it!
ReplyDeleteThat Easter bunny picture is the scariest thing ever. I'm stunned and in awe that you ran 11 miles. I'm not sure I could walk 11 miles even if I broke it up into multiple days. Great job! Now I need to go watch Blown Away. I've always been fascinated by glass blowing. I just can't get my head around how it really works. It just seems like sorcery. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteOkay, that Easter bunny is terrifying. LOL
ReplyDeleteYay for being partially vaccinated, and that's really kind of your boss to let you delay coming in until that happened.
I hope you got lots of wonderful candy from the Easter Bunny (though not that one in the photo; seriously shudder inducing. LOL)

I also liked Blown Away and seeing how the artists make the glass mold into incredible artwork.
ReplyDelete11 miles?! I am super impressed as I cannot run at all. Walk? Yes, Run? No.
And Cemetery Boys was a successful one for me as well. I like that the issues didn't hit the reader over the head and that there was love, humor, family, and more.
I have Cemetery Boys on my TBR...and oh, the truth in that Someee card at the start of this post!! :)
ReplyDeleteNow I want to watch Blown Away.. sounds like something I will truly enjoy as it is always fascinating to watch the process of glasswork
Sunday Scribblings #67: Yet Another Wonderful Week Goes By
Love the sick and twisted bunny! That's my kind of humour.
ReplyDeleteAt the Wolf's Table sounds interesting. These days I need more plot driven novels than character driven ones, but I do like both. Timing is sometimes everything. I am so glad you enjoyed The Cemetery Boys. I'm looking forward to reading it someday.
ReplyDeleteThe Bunny did bring me lots of candy too. :-)
Congrats on getting your first vaccine dose. My husband goes for his first one tomorrow.
I hope you are having a good week!
Yeah for Cemetery Boys and first COVID shot! Sounds like a pretty good week! Thanks for stopping by! Happy reading!
