Can’t Wait Wednesday is hosted by Wishful Endings. I get to show off the
interesting new books that are coming out in the next few weeks. December is
pretty light on the new releases, but I managed to find three books that I need
in my chilly little hands ASAP.
December 2020 Book Releases
THE BALLAD OF AMI MILES BY KRISTY DALLAS ALLEY
Young Adult Science Fiction
December 1, 2020
Raised in isolation at Heavenly Shepherd, her family’s
trailer-dealership-turned-survival compound, Ami Miles knows that she was lucky
to be born into a place of safety after the old world ended and the chaos
began. But when her grandfather arranges a marriage to a cold-eyed stranger,
she realizes that her “destiny” as one of the few females capable of still
bearing children isn’t something she’s ready to face.
With the help of one of her aunts, she flees the
only life she’s ever known, and sets off on a quest to find her long-lost
mother (and hopefully a mate of her own choosing). But as she journeys, Ami
discovers many new things about the world . . . and about herself.
Why I’m excited: This novel sounds like it combines two of my favorite things: apocalypses and cults. A few of my blogger friends have already read it and given it good reviews. If they like it, I probably will too. They tend to give awesome recommendations.
The Arctic
Fury by Greer Macallister
Adult Historical Fiction
December 1. 2020
In early 1853,
experienced California Trail guide Virginia Reeve is summoned to Boston by a
mysterious benefactor who offers her a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: lead a
party of 12 women into the wild, hazardous Arctic to search for the lost
Franklin Expedition. It’s an extraordinary request, but the party is made up of
extraordinary women. Each brings her own strengths and skills to the expedition—and
her own unsettling secrets. A year and a half later, back in Boston, Virginia
is on trial when not all of the women return. Told in alternating timelines
that follow both the sensational murder trial in Boston and the dangerous,
deadly progress of the women’s expedition into the frozen North, this
heart-pounding story will hold readers rapt as a chorus of voices answer the
trial’s all-consuming question: what happened out there on the ice?
Why I’m excited: Everything about this book is for me! It
has history, explorers, the Arctic, a murder, secrets, badass ladies. What more
could you want from a novel? It sounds like a tense, compelling mystery.
The Mystery Of
Mrs. Christie by Marie Benedict
Adult Historical Fiction
December 29, 2020
In December
1926, Agatha Christie goes missing. Investigators find her empty car on the
edge of a deep, gloomy pond, the only clues some tire tracks nearby and a fur
coat left in the car—strange for a frigid night. Her husband and daughter have no
knowledge of her whereabouts, and England unleashes an unprecedented manhunt to
find the up-and-coming mystery author. Eleven days later, she reappears, just
as mysteriously as she disappeared, claiming amnesia and providing no
explanations for her time away.
The puzzle of those missing eleven days has
persisted. With her trademark exploration into the shadows of history,
acclaimed author Marie Benedict brings us into the world of Agatha Christie,
imagining why such a brilliant woman would find herself at the center of such a
murky story.
Why I’m excited: Look at that
cover! Such pretty colors. I’m intrigued by this book because it’s based on a
true story. The mystery writer Agatha Christie really did go missing for eleven
days and trigger a massive manhunt. (Womanhunt?) There was speculation that she disappeared on
purpose to promote her books. This novel is a fictionalization of Christie’s
real life. I love books that blend true events and fiction.
Which December books are you looking forward to reading?
The Artic Fury is getting some good marketing right now! The Ballad of Ami Miles has the cult element that I'm so curious about!
ReplyDeleteI am really curious about the Mrs. Christie book. It's such a fascinating real life tale, of Agatha going missing. I think a fictional version would be intriguing!

The Mystery of Mrs. Christie sounds like it's going to be an amazing read!
ReplyDeleteI am really looking forward to reading The Arctic Fury also. I have enjoyed Macallister's writing in the past and so have high hopes. I hope you enjoy all of these if you read them! Have a great week, AJ.
ReplyDeleteWow, I didn't know Agatha Christie went missing for a while. That book sounds fascinating!
ReplyDeleteThe Christie book looks interesting. I read her biography not so long ago and it hinted that the reason for her disappearance could have been the break-up with her husband...
ReplyDeleteOh hello, The Mystery of Mrs Christie sounds fantastic -- and based on a true story too!?! I had no idea !
ReplyDeleteInteresting books. My December reading plan includes: a book on local folklore, one on what preachers can learn from novelist, a YA book by Gary Schmidt (Orbiting Jupiter) and a collection of Christmas writings by Archibald Rutledge.
