The Sunday Post #171

If you bother me while I'm reading, you deserve the death glare.

The Sunday Post is hosted by The Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to recap the past week, talk about next week, and share news. It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? is hosted by Book Date. I get to tell you what I’ve read recently.

On The Blog Last Week

On The Blog This Week

  • On Tuesday I show you what I’m reading for Nonfiction November.
  • On Thursday I share some of my controversial Harry Potter opinions.
  • On Saturday I review two popular 2018 releases.

In My Reading Life

Last week, I read The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith. Sometimes it's too slow and directionless for me, but the characters are so well-developed that I didn’t care very much. I mostly loved it.

Then I read Copenhagen by Michael Frayn. I know that this play is beloved by everyone, but . . . it’s not beloved by me. The historical aspects are interesting. The play is mostly like watching two college professors argue about a topic that I don’t understand or care about.

Right now, I’m reading The Blood Of Emmett Till by Timothy B. Tyson. It’s just as depressing as you’d expect. So far, it’s okay. It’s like a refresher course for things I learned in high school.

In My Internet Stalking Life

In The Rest Of My Life

Five things that made me happy last week:

  1. Halloween! I hope everybody stayed safe and had tons of fun.
  2. Caramel apples.
  3. We didn’t get any trick-or-treaters, so I ate the candy and watched movies. I saw The Purge: Election Year and The Cabin in the Woods. Cabin in the Woods was better. It’s like The Hunger Games, but with humor and gore.
  4. I was sad that all of the Halloween food competitions were over. When I turned on the TV yesterday, there was a Christmas food competition on. So . . . yay?
  5. Nonfiction November started! Nonfiction books take me a long time to read, so RIP Goodreads Goal. You’re not going to be achieved.

Can I Get A Connection?

Take care of yourselves and be kind to each other! See you around the blogosphere!

  1. Aw, it's just so sad that you had to eat candy and watch scary movies on Halloween....*so jealous right now.
I've heard others say that character development in Ripley is fantastic as well so I may have to read that one. I do like some characters that feel like real people whom I know well.

  2. Wait what AJ? You ate all the Halloween treats??? LOL happy Sunday ;-)

  3. I love the character of Ripley, especially in the next two books in the series. I find myself rooting for him when I really shouldn't!

  4. Even thinking about caramel apples makes me sad...I still have a temporary bridge on one side, so I have to chew on the other. Not good for chunky/chewy things. Sigh.

Enjoy your week, and thanks for visiting my blog.

  5. I'm not doing good on my goodreads goal either, I am just going to read whatever.
I love caramel apples with peanuts. I get them on the boardwalk all the time. They are so good.

I hope you have a great week AJ! Happy Reading!

  6. Cabin in the Woods is an awesome movie! We had a lot of trick or treaters, so thankfully they took most of our candy. I agree, some nonfiction can take me a long time to read, but I've read a couple this week that were really short and readable; you might like Sometimes Amazing Things Happen, about the Bellevue prison psych ward.

  7. I saw Santa at the mall yesterday. Seriously, GIVE THE TURKEY HIS TIME! Don't they have Thanksgiving themed food competitions? I can't wait to read your controversial HP post. I'll pray for your safety.

  8. I really want to read Copenhagen. Everyone raves over the play of it. I haven't seen it or read it. I hope you have a great week!

  9. I am unofficially participating in nonfiction November, and same here. They take me a bit longer to read, so I am sure people will get tired of seeing them in my what I'm reading posts. Lol.

I love Cabin in the Woods!! One of my favorite horror movies!

  10. Ooh controversial HP opinions- that sounds fun! :)

    I miss Halloween already :(

  11. It's so weird not to have Halloween stuff on TV and everywhere else. Transitions between holidays is such a weird time!

I didn't have any Carmel apples this season. Pity.

Good luck with your reading challenge!

  12. Your Halloween evening sounds lovely. We actually had a decent amount of trick or treaters this year.

  13. I've read all of her Mr. Ripley books. I was obsessed with them a decade ago. Our new place is a tight knit neighborhood and we get a ton of visitors on Halloween. A lot of the trick-or-treaters were toddlers and it was their first time out in costumes. It will be fun to see the grow up. My weekly updates

  14. We don't get a ton of trick or treaters, but I do enjoy them. I ate candy until I felt sick. LOL I can't help myself. I do love caramel apples too.

  15. I'll have to look for your HP post. We got a few Halloweeners, but ate most of the candy ourselves.

  16. Don't worry about the Goodreads goal. Reading what you want to read should always count the most!.

I'm definitely not ready to be seeing Christmas things everywhere. This fall is just moving too fast!

  17. I've been eating my kids' candies all week since Halloween. If I ever wanted to give up sugar, it ain't happening now, I can tell you that! I'm excited for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I love those holidays!

  18. That sounds like a good Halloween to me! I love your description of Cabin in the Woods. Have you given The Purge series a try - I think it's better than the movies.

  19. I need to read The Cabin in the Woods as I love your description of it!

  20. I really don't miss all the Halloween cooking shows. I like the Christmas ones better. We had 13 little ones visit for Trick or Treating - all cute and all in costumes. I still have bunches of candy though. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  21. I'm intrigued to find out your Harry Potter opinions... and I love caramel apples!

  22. Note to self: avoid Copenhagen. Sounds positively painful.
We got few trick or treaters but we still sat outside to hand out candy. My mom and sister and niece came over so it was still fun if not a little slow. All the excess candy has been brought to the office. I’ll let someone else enjoy the sugar rush. :)

  23. Thankfully we had a lot of trick or treaters so they took most of the candy I had bought. Eating leftover candy and watching movies does sound like a great evening though. :)

    Good luck with Nonfiction November!

  24. Candy and scary movies sound like the perfect way to spend Halloween. I don't think that I could only read non-fiction for an entire month but I hope you are able to find some good books for the month. Have a great week!

  25. I have not met my Goodreads goal in two years. It felt as in my brain was broke and nothing made sense. Then I found out I had an autoimmune thingie, and now that I am on meds I am reading faster. Maybe next year I will be back to my lean, mean reading machine status.

  26. Halloween and Candy apples made me happy this week too. :)
I also doubt I'll reach my Goodreads goal but I'm cool with it. I've read good books and I'm having fun. It used to really stress me out when I didn't hit it but I figure reading is a pleasure pursuit and while it's good to challenge yourself it's not good to stress. Enjoy Non-Fiction November!

  27. We had almost 100 trick or treaters so I never get to sit down long enough to watch a movie that night but I love Cabin in the Woods.

  28. I'm looking forward to your HP opinions! Halloween was pretty dang quiet here. The kid went out to a party and trick-or-treating with friends, and we had a grand total of three trick-or-treaters here. I don't like scary movies, so I watched a bunch of The Good Place instead.

  29. Happy belated Halloween. We don't celebrate it here, but I am glad yours was good :)
I have been meaning to read nonfiction books in Novemeber but I keep forgetting about Nonfiction November. But I am hoping to read atleast on nonfiction book :D Good luck with your TBR.
