Book Haul: It’s Been A While

Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews. I get to show off all the books I’ve gotten recently. It’s been a few months since I did a haul post. I guess it’s overdue.

It’s Been A While Book Haul

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott (Little Women #1)

One of the most popular books ever written about childhood charmingly recounts the home life of four sisters: literary-minded Jo March; Meg, the older sister who marries a young tutor; fashionable and artistic Amy; and gentle, musically inclined Beth. An unforgettable depiction of mid-19th century New England life.

Very Good Lives: The Fringe Benefits of Failure and the Importance of Imagination by J.K. Rowling

Drawing from stories of her own post-graduate years, the world famous author addresses some of life's most important questions with acuity and emotional force.

Days Without End by Sebastian Barry

Thomas McNulty, aged barely seventeen and having fled the Great Famine in Ireland, signs up for the U.S. Army in the 1850s. With his brother in arms, John Cole, Thomas goes on to fight in the Indian Wars—against the Sioux and the Yurok—and, ultimately, the Civil War. Orphans of terrible hardships themselves, the men find these days to be vivid and alive, despite the horrors they see and are complicit in.

Son by Lois Lowry (The Giver #4)

They called her Water Claire. When she washed up on their shore, no one knew that she came from a society where emotions and colors didn’t exist. That she had become a Vessel at age thirteen. That she had carried a Product at age fourteen. That it had been stolen from her body. Claire had a son. But what became of him she never knew. What was his name? Was he even alive? She was supposed to forget him, but that was impossible. Now Claire will stop at nothing to find her child, even if it means making an unimaginable sacrifice.

The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith (Mr. Ripley #1)

Tom Ripley: a young striver, newly arrived in the heady world of Manhattan in the 1950s. A product of a broken home, branded a "sissy" by his dismissive Aunt Dottie, Ripley becomes enamored of the moneyed world of his new friend, Dickie Greenleaf. This fondness turns obsessive when Ripley is sent to Italy to bring back his libertine pal but grows enraged by Dickie's ambivalent feelings for Marge, a charming American dilettante.

Have you read any of these? What did you think?

  1. Talented Mr. Ripley was so good! Am talking of the movie though. I keep forgetting it was a book. I'd love to read it too.

    1. I didn’t know it was a movie. I guess I’ll have something to watch if I like the book.

  4. I think Son is the most awful of that series (not awful as in written badly, but just everything that goes on in the book is basically horrible). I hope you enjoy your books and have a great weekend. - Katie

    1. Thanks! I’m interested to see how the series ends. I read the first book when I was 13, so I’ve been waiting a long time.

  5. Some interesting stuff! I think Rowling's book looks interesting... I love it when big time authors share some of their observations and whatnot. Always an interesting perspective!

  7. Little Women is one I read when I was very young and I remember liking it but it might just be because there were four sisters in that book and if you include me, we are a family of four sisters too. So... don't bet on that for the quality of how good the book is :P I'm also surprised I never read Son though I've read most of her other novels. Hope you enjoy all of these books ^.^

  9. Ummm I've never even heard of that book by J.K. Rowling?? I really need to look into that! I read The Giver a couple years ago and didn't care for it, but it's one of my brother's all time favorite series! I hope you enjoy Son!

  11. AJ thanks for visiting. I enjoyed your review of JK Rowling's book. Pity as I'm in search of maybe how she got to where she is, would be a WONDERFUL story.

  13. I have got to say, I didn't enjoy Little Women. I sadly DNFed the second part. It was just so preachey!

  14. Little Women is a fave of mine. I did enjoy The Giver and thought it fine as a stand-alone but enjoyed the sequels, mostly. Thanks for stopping by my stack!

  15. I've actually never read Little Women - maybe I should change that!

  16. I'm thinking you might be slightly past the magical age to read Little Women. I adored it as a kid, but wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole now--mostly so I can keep my sentimental fondness intact. Like many, I enjoyed the movie Talented Mr. Ripley but haven't read the book. I think I liked Son--as I recall, it was kind of weird, but also somewhat satisfying.

    1. I don’t have high hopes for Little Women. Preachy books make me rage. It’s a classic, so I feel like I should read it. I’m glad you liked Son and Mr. Ripley.

  17. I haven't read any of these in its entirety. I read a little bit of Little Women though.

It's fun to get new books. In two weeks our Library is having a Friends of the Library book sale... $5 for an entire bag of books on the third day! I'll definitely be heading on over for that. The day before they'll be having books for a discount price, and I might stop by just to see if there's something I absolutely have to have.

  22. I read The Giver back when the DVD came out and didn't love it. But I also read it over a holiday with other activities, so I feel like I may have been distracted. My initial thought is that I won't continue the series, but who knows! Perhaps someday I will. :D
