Quarter Year Reading Check In

It's the final countdown! We're in the last quarter of the year. How did the previous quarter go for you? Did you accomplish anything awesome? Did you get a lot of reading done?

Let's talk about the best and worst books I've read in the past few months.

Quarter Year Reading Check In

Best Book I Read Last Quarter?

Do rereads count? I reread all The Hunger Games, and then I read Sunrise On The Reaping for the first time. I loved all of them. I like their boldness. The author isn't afraid to make her characters do morally questionable things and blur the lines between "good guy" and "bad guy."

Worst Book I Read Last Quarter?

I didn't read any bad books last quarter! I enjoyed everything.

I guess I was underwhelmed by Careless People: A Cautionary Tale Of Power, Greed, And Lost Idealism by Sarah Wynn-Williams. It's a memoir/tell-all about the author's work at Facebook. There is so much hype and controversy about this book. I was on the library waitlist for months.

The book is . . . absolutely fine. I've read a few books about social media companies, and this one doesn't stand out from the crowd for me. We all know that social media sites put profit ahead of people. They have the ability to make the world a happier place, but they choose outrage because it's more profitable. There isn't much in Careless People that we don't already know.

Genres I Read The Most?

Oh, this is always a hard question because I like books that mix genres. I read 5 Hunger Games novels, so young adult dystopian fiction is a big chunk of my reading. I also read 4 nonfiction books and 3 children's classics.

Book That Surprised Me?

Maybe The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. I read that book for the first time when I was in elementary school. I felt "meh" about it back then, and I wanted to see if my opinions have changed now that I'm a very serious grownup with a master's degree in children's literature.

I still feel "meh" about it. I was surprised at how well I remember the plot and characters. Actually, I remember the plot being more complicated. Maybe I'm mixing up this book with others in the series. We were forced to read a few Narnia books in school.

I hated Edmund when I was a kid. Now I understand why he'd trade his siblings to a witch for a delicious dessert. I like dessert. I have a sibling I'd like to trade.

New Release I Haven't Read Yet?

I'm embarrassed to admit that I've been paying zero attention to new releases. Last time I went book shopping, I saw Fiend by Alma Katsu and really wanted it. I didn't buy it because new releases are expensive. It's a horror novel about siblings who are scheming to get their family's wealth.

Am I Succeeding At My Reading Goals?

I didn't make any serious reading goals, so  . . . yes? I set my Goodreads goal at 9 books. I've read way more than that.

  1. I read the Narnia books for the first time as an adult - the last book gutted me!
