In My Reading Life
I've read a bunch of books since we last spoke, but I currently have a respiratory infection and no gumption to review books, so here are the two reviews I wrote before I ran out of motivation.
I read You're Not Listening: What You're Missing And Why It Matters by Kate Murphy. It's about listening (obviously), and it was fine. It wasn't quite what I was looking for, which isn't the book's fault. I want to be a better listener. This book is about the importance of listening. I already know it's important! That's why I want to be good at it! This is not the how-to book that I require.
I'm skeptical that listening is a cure-all for society's problems. For example, my mom wants Donald Trump to exterminate all the Muslims. I understand that I can listen to her stupid idea without agreeing with it, but . . . why? It seems like an extremely stressful conversation that won't change anything. How do you decide which conversations are worth your mental energy? How do you have a relationship with someone who is your complete opposite?
See? This is why I need a how-to book about listening! I need a book with a lot more depth than this one. Recommendations, please?
Then I read The Archived duology by Victoria Schwab. These two fantasy books reminded me why young adult fiction is so addictive. The duology is about an alternate dimension where ghosts are stored like library books. Sometimes the ghosts wake up and try to escape from the library. It's our main characters' job to leave our world, enter the ghost world, and put the ghosts back on the shelf. The ghosts don't always go quietly.
These books are fun. They're twisty, angsty, mysterious, creative. There's even a love triangle. I couldn't stop reading. I enjoyed learning about the world where ghosts are archived. It's an intriguing take on the afterlife that I haven't seen before. I'm sad that this series got canceled. I would have happily read more books. There's so much that the author could do with the ghost library.
I wish I understood the characters' motivations better. Ghost hunting requires the teenage characters to miss school, lie to their parents, lie to their friends, miss out on social events, give up sleep, and cover up injuries. The kids aren't getting paid. Why are they doing this? Ghost hunting is cool, but not when it destroys your life and body. I never understood what the kids were getting out of this.
I want more books. I have questions!
In The Rest Of My Life
It's been over a month since I wrote a Sunday Post. Oops. Life is a lot, and I've been putting all my blogging time into my Tuesday posts because they're more popular.
If you're reading this on the day it's posted, then I'm at work, dealing with the holiday crowds.
What's been happening? I currently have the worst respiratory infection of my life. I've been sick for three weeks, and I'm still dizzy and have a headache that Advil can't touch. It has completely derailed my fitness goals. I'm frustrated. Luckily, work has been very chill about it. I've missed a lot of work because I can't get off the floor.
Speaking of work, I'm back at my park ranger job full time. It's been nonstop nuts, as always. The park where I work was voted the best state park in Colorado. I got to meet the governor, which was pretty cool. He gave us a trophy. Other than that, it's mostly just been our regularly scheduled chaos.
What else? Baby Brooklyn finished kindergarten. Here's a photo of her resisting the urge to let a squirrel into the house.
I think that's it. I need several naps.
It's A Holiday Weekend. Behave Yourselves.

I hope your infection clears up by itself or that you find a drug that works!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad the Sunday Post is back! I've been sick for the past couple weeks as well. I hope we both get better soon! The Archived sounds so interesting, but I'm really growing to dislike the "can't-tell-our-parents-we're-doing-this-monster-hunting/vampire-slaying/ghost-wrangling-business" trope.
ReplyDeleteUrg! I'm so sorry you've been smitten - especially as respiratory illnesses are so exhausting and take a lot of getting over. I hope the coming week finds you feeling a lot better!
ReplyDeleteI caught something respiratory while I was in NYC, and it's lingering. Ugh. Good luck dealing with the crowds this weekend. Congratulations on the award given to your park!
ReplyDeleteHere's one of the best books I've read on listening: How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen by David Brooks. Not that I've been able to actually do any of the things he suggests, but I'm practicing...I included a lot of the things I wanted to remember from my read in the little review here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/6006469488.
Life is a lot, especially with school aged kids this time of year. Mine still have a couple weeks left. Sorry about your mom - I avoid a lot of conversations with my mom too :( And the no squirrels in the house rule - totally enforced? Okay. LOL Glad you're back to work!
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry to hear that yu have been so unwell AJ! I hope you'll soon beat that infection!
ReplyDeleteI hope you feel better soon. It has to be tough dealing with park visitors when you are feeling miserable. Seriously, baby Brooklyn is looking too grown up. So tall!
ReplyDeleteI think when it comes to THOSE kind of topics, we should be able to say "I can't listen to that" and the other person should just shut up. LOL
ReplyDeleteI sure hope you get rid of that respiratory infection SOON and congrats on your honor and award!!!!! Well done!
I really hope you feel much better soon and get some naps. Don't let a squirrel in the house. One got in my friend's house when she was gone for a few days, apparently it pooped everywhere, including the walls and ceilings before it died there. Besides they are RODENTS. Glad to see you back and really hope you get some rest.
ReplyDeleteAnne - Books of My Heart This is my Sunday Post
Oh no! A 3-week respiratory infection sounds terrible. I hope you feel better very soon. And working through it on a holiday weekend sounds fairly miserable.
ReplyDeleteI hope you feel better soon! That sounds really draining!
ReplyDeleteHave a good week!
That respiratory infection sounds awful, hope you get to feeling better soon!
ReplyDeleteI hope you feel better soon. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear you're sick, Aj. One of my friends up here is battling something similar. Just stinks. Congratulations to Brooklyn! First grade on the way! Try to rest up.

Ugh, I hope you're feeling better soon! Why does it always seem like illnesses linger when it's warmer?
ReplyDeleteHope you feel better. I had to battle one of those recently and it was horrible.
ReplyDeleteI recommend I Think You're Wrong (But I'm Listening): A Guide to Grace-Filled Political Conversations. A little advise dehumanizing someone or a group of people opens the gateway for calling for violence. None of that is the answer. On separate occasions in real life two people say right in front of me that conservatives need to be kill. Its no coincidence that these people result to the dehumanizing tactic of name-calling.
ReplyDeleteHope you feel better soon. Have a great rest of your week.
