In My Reading Life

I got sick last week (no, not with that disease. I’m fine.) I spent a lot of time watching TV and feeling sorry for myself. I only finished one book.

That book was Things In Jars by Jess Kidd. It’s historical fantasy about a psychic detective and her ghost friend who are trying to solve the kidnapping of a (possible) mermaid. It’s frivolous and escapist. And gory. If you can’t handle body parts and fluids, you should probably stay away from this novel. It’s heavy on the descriptions of everything, including corpses. The missing-mermaid mystery is compelling. The characters are entertaining. There’s a mermaid child, a seven-foot-tall woman with excellent facial hair, and a ghost with a sense of humor. It’s definitely a strange cast of characters. I think there are a few too many characters, though. It took me a long time to remember who was who. And, I wanted to know more about the ghost. He has a huge personality and an amazing backstory. I wish he’d been a bigger part of the plot. It’s an unusual book. I enjoyed it enough that I will happily read the author’s other novels.

Right now, I’m reading two nonfiction books. They’re both super-interesting! The first is Ada Blackjack: A True Story Of Survival In The Arctic by Jennifer Niven. It’s about an Inuit woman in the 1920s who joined a team of Arctic explorers because they needed a seamstress/maid/cook for their expedition. Things went badly wrong in the Arctic. When a rescue ship finally reached the stranded explorers (two years after they left civilization), Ada was the only explorer still alive.

My other book is Talking To Strangers: What We Should Know About The People We Don’t Know by Malcolm Gladwell. So far, it’s mostly about lying and why it’s so hard to tell when someone is lying to us.

In The Rest Of My Life

Five things that made me happy last week:

  1. Choosing my Super Bowl food. I don’t care about football, but I’m going to eat nachos and ice cream with all the toppings.
  2. . . . I may have already broken into the M&Ms because I have no chill when it comes to snacks.
  3. This weekend is 24 in 48 readathon. You’re supposed to read for 24 out of 48 hours. I’ve never been able to read for 24 hours, but that doesn’t stop me from trying.
  4. My mom got her first COVID shot.
  5. I did my 365th day of yoga! I have now done yoga every day for a year.

  1. Yay!! I am so glad your mom got her first shot! My mom goes Tuesday. I could cry with relief.

Ada Blackjack looks fantastic! I am going to add that to my list for sure.

Enjoy your week, and glad you are feeling better!

  2. Congratulations on a year of yoga! That show some real stick-with-it-ness. Sorry to hear you were ill, but glad you didn't have THAT. You always make me want nachos. I hope they are delish!

  3. Happy day! I'm glad your mom got her first shot. I feel like there should be a spot where we virtually celebrate when people get vaccinated from this awful sickness.

I have Talking to Strangers on my list of books I might like to read. Let's see what you think. I would certainly like to have a better idea of who is lying.

I thought about joining in for the readathon, and I may but I didn't really prepare for it. We'll see. I like to spend Sundays watching for birds and reading blogs, so we'll see.

Congrats on your year of yoga. Hard as I try I can't do more than just a few yoga stretches each day. I seem to be one of those folks who needs group peer pressure to do yoga.

  4. Sorry to hear you were sick. I don't watch the super bowl, but I do like to eat super bowl food. :)

  5. I like Super bowl food as well. Congrats on Yoga. I recently read about this guys journey on sobriety and I find it fascinating, having two birth parents who struggled with alcoholism. JOurneys and good habits help.

  6. My dad is meant to be getting his first Covid vaccine this week if all goes to plan. We'll still be careful of course but it is a bit of a relief to see him get the first one.

  7. Good job on the yoga! I love your meme at the top, I'm all about food, good and yummy food! And I did recognize myself when you said you had no-chill when it came to snacks. People always yell at me: SNAACKKS, it's like my nickname xD

  8. I don't like watching football, but I do love the snacks!

I am curious about Things in Jars. Here are my WEEKLY UPDATES

  9. Wow, congratulations on 365 days of Yoga! How amazing!

I didn't take part in the 24in48 but I did my own reading spree from Friday night until last night, with all my routines and chores built in.

  12. Ada Blackjack sounds amazing. I love books with cold, snowy settings, especially survival stories. Good for you doing a year of yoga!! I recently starting doing a quick stretching routine every evening in hopes that it will improve my sleep. We'll see!

  13. I tried Talking to Strangers on audio and couldn't into it. Will give it a go in print since I've enjoyed his other books. Enjoy the Super Bowl food... I'm not big on the game itself either.

  14. Yay for your Mom's first dose and a year of yoga. But I'm really most excited about Super Bowl snacks. We don't watch tv so I am not really planning anything though.

  15. I like football but I also like the food :) Of course, we didn't have nachos. Boo. Yay for your mom getting her first shot and a year of yoga. I think that I might like Things in Jars so I will have to check that one out. Have a great week!

  16. Congrats on your yoga! that's awesome. My whole family has Covid so we don't have too many fun Super bowl snacks, but it's currently on. hah

  17. If you're sick it's basically the rule to feel sorry for yourself. Or at least that's what I tell myself! Congratulations to your mom for getting her first shot. Every person I hear of that gets it I feel like we're getting just a little bit closer to some normalcy. And congratulations to 365 days of yoga! I'm slowly getting back to it and am so glad I am. Have a great week!

  18. You are the second blogger who mentioned being under the weather and the second to say it wasn't Covid. Interesting how "sick" is better than Covid--and I'll be so glad when I'm eligible for a shot

  19. Wow, I'm impressed with your yoga streak! I tried to do yoga every day and barely made it a week! Ha ha!

I'm with you on the Super Bowl snacks. Let's just say I took full advantage of the eating options today!

  20. Oh my, that is so interesting about the Inuit women being the only woman alive when they were picked up. I guess she was able to adapt and knew how to live in such an environment. Hope you enjoyed the snacks and some super bowl fun.

  21. Interesting books you're reading, Aj. I particularly like the sound of the Arctic survival tale. I visited Greenland a couple of years ago and was fascinated by the Inuit culture and all the customs they developed to survive in such a harsh environment.

Sorry that you were ill, and hope you're feeling better now! Nachos and ice cream should help with that :)

  22. Interesting variety of books. I'm not really into Super Bowl snacks but I do usually enjoy the commercials more than the game. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  23. That's good news for your mom! I'm not sure when my mom will get hers but I'm looking forward to it, it will be a relief. Have a great week and happy reading!

  24. Congratulations on your yoga habit ! And I'm glad your mother got the vaccine, it must be a relief. I read a couple of books years ago about arctic exploration, they didn't end really well. That a seamstress/cook was the only survivor sounds like an interesting story ^^

  25. Awesome job with the yoga! Sorry you were sick, but glad you are doing okay. Also glad that your mom got the vaccine! I NEED to read Ada's story now, that sounds awesome! And the mermaid one sounds cool, too!

  26. I'm so happy to hear your mum got her first covid shot! I don't care for football but I did watch the half time show with The Weekend. His music is good.

  28. I'm sorry you were sick, but relieved it wasn't COVID-19. And you're doing FANTASTIC on the yoga! I'm sure you're relieved that your mom got her first shot. Two of my four parents have also gotten their first shots, and one gets the second shot this week. Ada Blackjack's story sounds amazing!

  29. So glad your mom was able to get the vaccine. We had people waiting in two-hour lines out in the cold today. I hope that gets better.

Things in Jars sounds intriguing and fascinating, despite it not being my typical read.

    Hope you enjoy your books.

  30. I got sick too last week :( Hope you are feeling better, I am finally.
I wasn’t impressed with Talking to Strangers unfortunately

Wishing you a great reading week

  31. YAY! Congratulations on 365 days of Yoga, that is amazing! The fact that you can do it while you're sick and I'm sitting here not wanting to get on my bike and exercise, sigh, can you please give me some of your motivation?? You rock! Also nachos and ice cream with toppings is the best, sounds like a yummy day!
