On The Blog This Week
- On Tuesday I (maybe?) list my most-anticipated adult book releases for 2021.
In My Reading Life
Last week, I finished Stella By Starlight by Sharon M. Draper and loved it! It reminds me of the slow, rural,
character-driven stories I devoured as a young teenager. There isn’t much of a
plot, but the vivid setting and strong characters were fascinating enough to
keep me reading. It’s about the day-to-day life of a kid named Stella who is growing
up in the south in the 1930s. The drama starts when Stella and her brother
sneak out of the house at night and accidentally stumble across a KKK rally. It’s
such a good book! There’s tension, and humor, and history, and a whole town of
loveable characters. If you like middlegrade books and don’t mind a meandering slice-of-life plot, you need to read this novel.
After Stella By Starlight, I wanted more middlegrade, so I picked up The Fourteenth Goldfish by Jennifer L. Holm. This book is very different from Stella. It’s a science fiction story about an elderly scientist who discovers a way to reverse aging. Of course he tests his experiment on himself and ends up looking like a thirteen-year-old. Then he moves in with his daughter and eleven-year-old granddaughter. The book has a cartoonish quality. There’s a lot of humor and characters with over-the-top personalities. For an adult, it’s the kind of book you read quickly, laugh at, and then forget. I enjoyed it, but I don’t think it left a lasting impression on me. Kids would find it entertaining. It’s an easy read that doesn’t require a lot of thought. I probably would have adored it as a kid.
Right now, I’m reading The Wolves Of
Winter by Tyrell
Johnson. It’s a dystopia set in Yukon Territory. I flew through
the beginning of the book because it hooked me right away. It starts with a
mysterious stranger showing up at a settlement deep in the wilderness. Now the
book has become more science-fiction-ish. One of the characters has been
captured by a potentially evil government organization. My attention is
wavering a little because I’ve read stuff like this before. It’s still a good
book. I definitely want to finish it. I’m also reading All The Crooked Saints by Maggie Stiefvater. I have mixed feelings
so far. It’s about a family of saints who can perform bizarre “miracles.” The
writing style is clever, lively, and makes me laugh. It reminds me of the tall
tales I grew up hearing at Girl Scout camps. The story is set in Colorado, which
is where I live. I love coming across familiar landscapes in books. The author
does a fabulous job of describing the setting. I’m not sold on the characters.
So far, they’re very superficial. The point-of-view bounces around so much that
I don’t feel like I know any of them.
In The Rest Of My Life
Five things that made me happy last week:
- Hockey is back! I’m not thrilled that teams are traveling during a pandemic, but I’m crossing my fingers that all the changes made by the NHL will keep everyone as safe as possible.
- I ate a lot of chocolate chip cookies. A LOT.
- Week 2 of half-marathon training is done! I’m very sore. The runs weren’t too bad until Thursday when it was so windy that I kept getting blown into the prickle bushes.
- I deep-cleaned my office and bedroom. I hate cleaning, but I hate dog hair even more.
- I gave my reading spreadsheets a 2021 makeover. I’m ready to read and track all my ridiculous data. If you want to know what I track, check out my 2020 wrap up.

Whoo hoo! Way to go with your training (and all the cookies. Yum!) I hate cleaning too, but it's a necessary evil. I am trying a treatment on in my shower I saw on you-tube. Hoping it works. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a great week, AJ. Impressed you still go out training when you get so buffeted by the wind, you end up in prickle bushes. I hope the soreness decreases and the coming week is full of books and hockey for you:))
ReplyDeleteOh, I like the look of Fourteenth Goldfish and Stella by Starlight. Thanks for sharing those. I haven't read a Sharon Draper book in a while.
ReplyDeleteWolves of Winter does look good. I'm sorry you hit a lull in it. I hope it picks up again.
I'd love to know how you do those data spreadsheets. Do you keep stats on each book you finish? It would sure be nice if Goodreads could do that for me.
Of course you eat lots of cookies! You are running for a semi marathon in the chilling winter of Coolrado AJ! What did you expect? LOL
ReplyDeleteI hate cleaning but I just love the after effect. Nothing beats a clean place.
ReplyDeleteYeah, cleaning is no fun but neither is dog hair. It's a never ending battle against dog hair at my house. I admire your half marathon training, especially in this cold weather! I hope you have a great week! Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteI struggled with the ending of Stella by Starlight, but I loved the feel and atmosphere, and so many of the characters.
ReplyDeleteI am now probably going to eat a bunch of chocolate chip cookies today because that sounds good. And it's my birthday so I can do whatever I want.
Cleaning isn't fun but I have to do it regularly, only because of the cats we have here, two with looooooong black fur. Reading is a lot more fun ! Training for marathon must feel good too, at least all the endorphines once you've finished a session :) Have a great week !
ReplyDeleteAfter all that training, I'd say you were entitled to the cookies!
ReplyDeleteI have The Wolves Of Winter on my bookshelf but have not read it yet. I hate pet hairs too. It's the perfect motivator for cleaning up.
ReplyDeleteI am really looking forward to reading Stella by Starlight. The Wolves of Winter sounds like a good one. I hope All the Crooked Saints gets better for you. I'm not a fan of cleaning either, but it must be done. I hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI'm kind of curious about All The Crooked Saints, but the only Maggie Stiefvater books I've read were the first two Raven Boys books, and I just couldn't get into them. I hope you start to enjoy it more soon!
ReplyDeleteI do love MG reads! Glad you had a pretty good week. Excited to see what adult books you are looking forward to!

Well you are doing well keeping busy and good job on the cleaning. I hope to manage that soon. I love it when books have settings where I live or have lived. Stay well!
ReplyDeleteAnne - Books of My Heart This is my Sunday Post
Oh my gosh that raccoon is me! And I hope The Wolves of Winter finishes well for you.
ReplyDeleteYay for hockey! And cookies :)
I've been hearing lots of good things about All the Crooked Saints! I really need to read that book soon!
ReplyDeleteHere’s my Sunday Post!

Stella by Starlight sounds like a good book. Now I'm craving chocolate chip cookies :) I love your book tracking spreadsheet. Very nice. Hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI think even thinking about half marathon training deserves lots of chocolate chip cookies much less doing it! In fact I think I might need to make chocolate chip cookies and all I've done is a handful of really low key yoga practices. And that's not even mentioning the deep cleaning. I'm seriously impressed. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI'm totally addicted to tracking all my reading data, too. My friends tease me about my spreadsheet addiction!
ReplyDeleteI think a lot of chocolate chip eating is going on! I ate a lot, and when I tried to order more with my Instacart app, the store was out of them! LOL
ReplyDeleteThe best thing about living in this senior residence: there is staff to do the deep cleaning! LOL.
Enjoy your week, and thanks for visiting my blog.
Well done on completing your second week of training and for doing so much cleaning. Exercise and housework are two things that I seem to be neglecting terribly lately.
ReplyDeleteStella by Starlight sounds interesting. Shame All the Crooked Saints is giving you mixed feelings. I'm a big Maggie S fan but haven't read that one yet.
I think I like Stiefvater as a personality - she's a really entertaining speaker - than I do as an author. I loved the Shiver series but haven't really enjoyed any of her other books. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteI read both The Wolves of Winter and All the Crooked Saints, they both pretty intriguing stories! I hope you enjoy them overall once you finish them :) And I'm excited for a lot of the YA 2021 releases that you are, and you introduced me to a few! Thanks for stopping by! Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a good week. ;) And yes to chocolate chip cookies. I love everything chocolate.. Sigh.. I heard about someone not liking chocolate the other day. I could honestly cry for them. But maybe those are the pregnancy hormones! LOL!
ReplyDeleteHave a great week and happy reading.
Well done on both the marathon training AND the deep clean! I don't have dogs, just cats, but the amount of fluff I deal with on a daily/weekly basis is ridiculous and the deep cleans show me that I miss more than I clean up on the regular! lol
ReplyDeleteI've been looking at Stella by Starlight (I think I saw you mention it earlier?) but I keep deciding that I'm just not currently in the headspace for a book that mentions the Klan. Hopefully soon though! You make it sound really good!
ReplyDeleteTangent here, based on your racoon picture. My husband and I visited the North American Bigfoot Center in Oregon as a quirky way to spend an afternoon (I don't believe in them, but never say never, right?). They featured a cast of a sasquatch's fingers that they had gotten from a Nutella trap they'd set up in the woods! The idea is that the sasquatch had reached in to get a scoop of Nutella and left imprints of its fingers behind. I laughed so hard! A Nutella trap would work for me if I were a sasquatch! I laughed even harder when we found the butt cast from where a sasquatch supposedly had a seat in the mud by a river. I sent a picture to my friend. She asked, "How do they know it's a sasquatch and not a big hairy lumberjack butt?" I was dying!
Kudos to you for training for a marathon in January in Colorado! You're tougher than me!
Enjoy your week!
I was just thinking about how much I need to start deep-cleaning but I won't want to. We've got two cats so I feel your pain. I was gifted a roomba and that has been a life changer.
ReplyDeleteMayhaps I"ll make choc chip cookies tomorrow!
Yes I can relate to the furry dude with the jar! At 3am I was snacking on cheese doritos and nacho cheese dip!
