On The Blog Last Week

On The Blog This Week

  • On Monday I wrap up March.
  • On Tuesday I talk about award-winning books that are actually worth reading.
  • On Wednesday I have more new releases to blather about.

In My Reading Life

I did it! I finished all 9 Sherlock Holmes books. That’s 1,200+ pages of Sherlock. Last week, I finished The Valley of Fear. It's about a murder connected to a gang who ran a mining town. The middle of the book drags, but that ending? OMG, people, I did not see that coming.

Then I finished the final two Sherlock short story collections. The stories in His Last Bow and The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes are some of my favorites. They’re darker and grittier than the average Sherlock story.

Then I was done with Sherlock! I started reading for the OWLs Readathon. I finished Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire. It's a lot bloodier than I expected for a young adult portal fantasy. I enjoyed it. I need to find more fantasy books like that one.

Right now, I’m reading They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera. So far, the plot is really slow, but I’m invested in the characters’ lives (and inevitable deaths).

In The Rest Of My Life

Five things that made me happy last week:

  1. I finished Sherlock Holmes!
  2. We finally got food delivered. I’m happy because we were running out of everything. The store is also running out of everything, so we got some interesting substitutions in our food order. I didn’t know that a product called “hot dog sauce” existed, but I ate it last night.
  3. Watching movies! I watched Coraline (very disturbing) and Pride and Prejudice (still awesome, even though I’ve seen it a thousand times).
  4. OWLs Readathon started! I haven’t gotten involved in the Twitter stuff, but I’m excited for all the books I’m planning to read.
  5. I have now done yoga every day for two months. I’m still terrible at it, and my body hurts, but I’m trying!

  1. Wow! That's a lot of Sherlock Holmes. I wonder if you find that you have gotten better at solving the mysteries after reading so much Holmes. I'm terrible at mysteries. My husband and I are trying to listen to The Mystery of the Yellow Room (he is crazy about mysteries and this one is a classic, on my Classics Club list), but I have absolutely no idea of who tried to kill the victim in the story, and we are 20 percent into the book.

Our grocery delivery/carryout has been excellent. We are sometimes not able to get flour or milk or toilet paper (never, so far), but we are adapting. I found a place that mailed cake flour (very expensive) and I'm hoping to get some powdered milk tomorrow. The food pantry in our town is open (the lady that runs it is 75, but still shows up every day) and lots of people are taking advantage of that.

So glad to hear you are continuing with the yoga. I got the mat out of the car yesterday. Does that count?

  2. If your body hurts, you must be doing it right? What was the hot dog sauce a substitute for? For chili? Interesting. If I come across any bloody YA fantasies, I will let you know

  3. Congrats on finishing Sherlock Holmes! I haven't read any of them yet but always planned to! Also on the 2 straight months of yoga! I was only doing 3-5 days a week but this whole ordeal has me focusing on it more and I'm getting along with the soreness now! Haha
Is hotdog sauce an alternative ketchup?!

Have a great week, AJ! Happy reading!

  4. I have been checking out deliveries, but so far, I've managed with staff help: there is one person who used to drive us on shopping trips, but now will shop for us. She is great.

I really must read some Sherlock Holmes. Thanks for the inspiration.

    Here are my WEEKLY UPDATES

  5. I don't think I've ever read a Sherlock Holmes mystery!

Yikes, that is scary about the stores running out of food! I hope you're able to get everything you need, eventually!

  6. It is kind of interesting to see how some people act when something out of their control is happening, isn´t it? Happy reading and stay safe.

  7. I should check out some yoga. Your descriptions and enthusiasm make me want to read some Sherlock Holmes :) Take care of you and yours and enjoy your week!

  8. Yay for reading all the Sherlock Holmes books! I hope you enjoyed the experience. I have heard mixed reviews of Seanan's book. I have enjoyed some of her other books, and am interested in reading Every Heart a Doorway so I am glad to hear you liked it. Maybe I should put on Pride and Prejudice and re-watch it.

I hope you have a good week. Stay safe and well.

  9. YAY! I love Sherlock Holmes. We also have had some interesting substitutions but I generally don't let them substitute because we need to be careful about the gluten free for my daughter. Thanks for making me laugh!

Have a wonderful week! Be kind and take care of yourself!

  10. Congrats on finishing Sherlock Holmes! I still need to do that myself. My husband is a huge fan of the books so we have them all, but I've only read a couple of them so far. Yay for food deliveries too. I'm sitting here waiting for one now and they're hours late so I'm expecting some interesting substitutions as well.

  11. That is seriously impressive- reading all the Sherlock. I've never read ANY. I feel like a heathen.

Seems like pretty good reading for this time though- a good distraction?

    I like a good portal fantasy. :)

I love food delivery! And hot dog sauce... that sounds like that could be really good or not, depending lol :)

  12. Well done on your Holmes marathon.
I saw a tweet that Silvera’s mother and grandmother have both been diagnosed with Covid-19 ;(

Wishing you a great reading week and good health

  13. I have the whole Holmes collection on audio and need to get listening! I'm a big fan of takeout! It's nice to have a break from cooking and I feel like I'm helping a little bit support local businesses. I'm not entirely sure what hotdog sauce is either but hopefully it was good! Have a great week!

  15. I loved 'Every Heart a Doorway' even though I rarely read YA fantasy. I'm glad you're getting so much done. I got around to everyone's blog late today, as I was driving lyft earlier today.

  16. Congrats on finishing all that Holmes! I've run out a couple of times for groceries and have mostly gotten everything I needed. Stay safe and happy reading!

  17. Thank you for linking to your tweet so I could see the update, haha. That's awesome you've stuck to the yoga every day for two months now :-) Stay safe <3

  18. I didn't love Every Heart a Doorway. Some darker YA fantasy I've liked recently includes: The Bone Houses, The Hazel Wood, and Cruel Prince. We haven't been getting our food delivered, but send one person out on rare stock-up runs. I guess we'll be wearing masks next time.

  19. Go you on reading all the Sherlock books - I read them all so long ago, but love picking up them now and again for some comfort reading. Good luck with the OWL's readathon!

Also, yoga every day for two months - an amazing feat also!

  20. That is a lot of Sherlock Holmes! I am a fan but am not sure that I've read everything. Have fun with your Readathon. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  21. Congratulations on your Sherlockathon! I'm going to try and read a bit this morning to calm myself down while trying not to obsess about the news again.

  22. I am impressed that you were able to get through all of the Sherlock books. I do want to read them at some point but I am sure it will be a long drawn out process for me. I listened to part of They Both Die at the End last year with my daughter during a trip but never got around to finishing it but I keep thinking about it. I may have to pull that one out and finish it soon. Have a great week!

  23. Wow, that's a lot of Sherlock Holmes! :-)

I think, if I remember correctly, the plot of They Both Die at the End was not the main attraction---but I was certainly invested in the characters.
