In My Reading Life
Last week’s reading didn’t start out as planned. I should
have listened to my instincts and quit The Clay Girl by Heather Tucker. It’s about a genius writer child growing up
with drug-addicted parents in 1960s Canada. I didn’t quit because there are
some brilliant lines, and the character’s messy, complicated family is fascinating.
I got frustrated by the writing style. It’s too abstract for me. I just wanted
the author to tell me what was going on! I didn’t need all the extra weirdness.
Luckily, my next book was much better. I finished No True Believers by Rabiah York Lumbard.
It’s about a Muslim teen who believes her creepy neighbors are trying to frame
her for a terrorist attack. I love the main character. She’s very mature and
self-aware. If you like contemporary YA, you should read this book.
Right now, I’m reading The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid. It’s excellent so
far.
In The Rest Of My Life
Five things that made me happy last week:
- I hope everyone had a fun Super Bowl! I ate many nachos and paid zero attention to the game. Now that I’m thinking about it, I don’t even know who won. Oops. Nachos are distracting, okay! I only attend football parties for the food.
- Also, I ate nachos the day after the Super Bowl because there were leftover nacho ingredients.
- I survived the first week of my 30 day yoga challenge. My stomach and arms hurt so bad right now. I have really terrible balance. It’s kind of hilarious.
- New books!
- Crispy Batter finished her third Pondathon Readathon quest!

Way to go on your yoga challenge! Soon you'll be balancing like a pro. I didn't watch the game, but the worst part is that I didn't eat any nachos either. *sad face*
ReplyDeleteNo nachos is so sad. :(

The Clay Girl sounds like a tough read. I don't I could have stuck with it. I watched most of the game but sadly had no nachos. I'm watching what I eat and nachos are a thing of the past I fear. *sobs loudly* Kudos on the yoga challenge! I took a six week yoga series for beginners at a local studio last year and was surprised at how demanding it was.
ReplyDeleteThe first few days of yoga were so easy, and then it suddenly became very not easy! Luckily, the last few days haven’t been bad.

I watched the ads and the half time show on YouTube, I don’t even know who was playing in the game ;)
ReplyDeleteI must get to Seven Husbands eventually
Wishing you a great reading week
I think I only saw the Google ad. I did a terrible job of paying attention to the TV.

Awesome job with the yoga challenge! I'm currently trying to build my upper body strength for that reason!
ReplyDeleteI didn't watch the Superbowl but it's been a good week! I'm craving loaded nachos now. Also, adding No True Believers to my TBR! :)
Have a great week, AJ!
If you read No True Believers, I hope you like it!

For super bowl sunday, I ate like I was watching the game, but I only watched the half time show. :)
ReplyDeleteHaha, I just ate. A lot.

Bwahahaha nachos are distracting he? And congrats on your first week of yoga challenge! I should try it too! Do you take classes or watch tutorials on youtube? I love watching Yoga with Adrienne but if you have others to recommend....
ReplyDeleteFor the 30 day challenge, I’m doing Yoga With Adriene. I like her videos because they aren’t always difficult.

I love the sound of No True Believers! I'll definitely be checking it out - glad you enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteI love yoga but have not been able to make it a regular part of my routine. I'm hoping I can start doing it but may wait a few months. Just love how it makes me feel afterwards.
No True Believers is really good! I hope you’re able to read it.

As someone who attends Pilates classes, which also relies on balance and control - do persevere with your Yoga, as even if you are wobbly to start with, you can improve! I hope you have a great reading week, AJ:)
ReplyDeleteI’m hoping I’m less wobbly by the end of the 30 days!

Nachos are the world's most perfect food. A yoga challenge sounds great. I definitely need to do something. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteNatflix&Books
The yoga challenge has been fun. I look forward to it every day.

Glad to hear you're enjoying Evelyn Hugo! I only watched a little bit of the Super Bowl and since my husband is being all good with his diet, we didn't even have any yummy food for it!
ReplyDeleteThe only reason I tolerate football is for the snacks. :)
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I'm mad for yoga, even though I have no stretchability and no balance. You gotta love all the animal poses, I think.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see what you think of Seven Husbands. I've heard lots of good stuff about it.
Not only did I not learn who won the Super Bowl, I didn't even know who was in it. Then again, I am off in Paris.
Have a great week.
I’m about halfway through Evelyn Hugo, and I really like it! It’s living up to the hype so far.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I've got to get back to a routine. Great job with the yoga. I didn't pay attention to the Super Bowl but the nachos sound great. We actually had nachos last Sunday but not for the Super Bowl.
ReplyDeleteI hope you have some great reads this week and nachos!
Anne - Books of My Heart Here is my Sunday Post
I don’t think there will be any more nachos for a while, but I love the book I’m currently reading.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Nachos! Definitely better than football. *nods* I could eat nachos every day really. Glad to hear Evelyn Hugo is good too. I need to read some more TJR.
ReplyDeleteI could also eat nachos every day. They’re one of the world’s most perfect foods.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I did watch the game (The Chiefs won by the way) but I also had some nachos and some wings. We always use the Super Bowl as an excuse to eat a bunch of junk. I have had The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo on my shelf for ages. I might need to dust it off and start reading it. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteHaha, thanks for telling me who won. I wondered about that. I hope you enjoy Evelyn Hugo when you read it!
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Looking forward to your review of The Seven Husbands, to convince to read it now. Enjoy your week!

So far, I love Evelyn Hugo!
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I didn't watch the superbowl or have any of the cool snacks! I should have at least made the snacks even if I didn't watch, could have called it a non-watch party! :)
ReplyDeleteHave a great week and happy reading!

Week in Review
I pretty much had a non-watch party. It was on in the background while I ate snacks.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
The Clay Girl would work for the Canadian book challenge I'm participating in. I'll keep your thoughts in mind if/when I read it. My weekly update
ReplyDeleteIf you like abstract writing, you might enjoy it. I mostly found it frustrating.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Good job on the yoga! I got a copy of No True Believers while I was out of town, it looks really good.
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoy No True Believers!

I semi watched the Superbowl because my family had it on, but I also just really enjoyed the snacks. Yum. LOL New books always make me happy and I'm glad your latest read was much better.

Yep, my family watched the Super Bowl, but I was only there for the snacks.

That's great about the yoga challenge! I have been meaning to get back to practicing yoga for a very long time now...lol.
ReplyDeleteAnd nachos! One of my biggest loves.
Have a great one!
I kept telling myself that I wanted to do yoga. I’m glad I finally did it.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I miss eating Nachos! I think I might be able to eat them again...someday.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you are enjoying The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo...I liked it.
Have a great week, and here are my Weekly Updates
I don’t know if I could live without nachos. My body is probably 85% queso.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
It was a really good football game. I can see how nachos would be distracting though. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteI’m glad it was a good game! I don’t know anything about football. I’m just there to eat. :)
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I'm not really a YA reader, but No True Believers sounds really good!
ReplyDeleteMmm... Nachos...
No True Believers was good! The ending kept me up past bedtime.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I never do well with weird especially in the writing style. I also just want the author to get on with it and just tell me what is happening instead of trying to be all clever!
ReplyDeleteExactly! I like unusual writing, but too much of it gets in the way of everything else.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Congrats on yoga challenge! Interesting reading week - will check out No True Believers.
ReplyDeleteHope you're enjoying Evelyn Hugo - it's one of my favorites :)
ReplyDeleteAlso, we don't watch the Superbowl here, but I'd be totally there for the nachos!
No True Believers sounds very intriguing! I've already forgotten the Superbowl was just last week. Enjoy your week :)
ReplyDeleteSounds like it was a week of nachos. Perfect! :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm now off to go read your review of No True Believers.

I love the cover of Clay Girl. 👍✨
ReplyDeleteWe aren't a football family, so Super Bowl Sunday is just another day around here. ☺
