The Sunday Post #174

A blog for the classy modern hermit.

The Sunday Post is hosted by The Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to recap the past week, talk about next week, and share news. It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? is hosted by Book Date. I get to tell you what I’ve read recently.

On The Blog Last Week

On The Blog This Week

  • On Tuesday I recommend books with excellent platonic relationships.
  • On Thursday I review two books with excellent death and destruction.
  • On Saturday I review two nonfiction books.

In My Reading Life

Last week, I finished Opening Skinner’s Box: Great Psychological Experiments of the Twentieth Century by Lauren Slater. I didn’t like it very much. When the author writes about science, the book is really good. Unfortunately, between the experiments, we’re forced to take turgid, overwritten excursions to the author’s imagination. She tells us how she “imagines” people and places look. She makes (mean) judgments about people’s thoughts and motivations. She goes on self-centered tangents. The flowery writing and authorial intrusions get in the way of the science.

Right now, I’m reading The Road to Jonestown: Jim Jones and Peoples Temple by Jeff Guinn. OMG, guys, this book is dense. It’s 500+ pages of tiny font. Trying to hold it is breaking my wrists. I’ve been reading it for over a week, and I’m not close to done. I’m pretty sure I’ll still be reading this book when I die of old age. I’m not giving up, though. I’m going to finish it.

In My Internet Stalking Life

In The Rest Of My Life

Five things that made me happy last week:

  1. The Black Friday Readathon was fun, even though I didn’t get much reading done. Black Friday turned out to be busier than I expected.
  2. Thanksgiving! I cooked a turkey for the first time ever. It was a maple bacon turkey, and it was yummy. My mom dropped the turkey when she was putting it in the oven for me, but other than that, there were no disasters.
  3. Pumpkin pie and chocolate pie! I really like pie.
  4. I traded for a new book. Nobody tell my book-acquiring ban. Shhh.
  5. I got all of my Christmas shopping done.

Hello, I need friends!

Take care of yourselves and be kind to each other! See you around the blogosphere!

  1. I like pie as well. And a black Friday readathon. What a great concept. This year Walmart was practically empty on Black friday. What a shocker. I got a few things here and there including a Hover board, which I'm really having fun with!

  2. Your turkey sounds like it was amazing. Do you have a picture? I would love to see that masterpiece. I am jealous of everyone, who had pumpkin pie, because I had none. *sad face* You are a Christmas shopping boss. I don't even have that many gifts to get, yet I have none. I suck at this.

I am trying to do someone line shopping as I hate the stores and people being ignorant. I try to do most of it online except for like stocking stuffers. I have just started and I am in no way done. I have a bunch of people to get for and it drives me mad. Have a wonderful week!
