In My Reading Life
I didn’t
read much last week because I had a Denver Five Things pass. I spent the week
doing things outside of the house instead of reading.
I
finished Pull Me Under by Kelly Luce.
The premise sounded interesting. The main character murdered someone when she
was a child. As an adult, she moves from Japan to the US and tries to create a
new life for herself while keeping her past hidden. I got frustrated with the
book. The narrator is bland, and I felt like I was always several steps ahead
of her. I got irritated with her for taking so long to spot what’s obvious and
do something about it.
Right
now, I’m reading The Possessions by Sara
Flannery Murphy. I’m not loving this one either. It’s too slow for me, and
(currently) I don’t understand the narrator’s motives.
In My
Internet Stalking Life
Like I said, I was busy last week, so I didn't get much blog hopping done.
- Marie @ Drizzle & Hurricane books talks about how to support international bloggers.
- Curious about the books on the Man Booker Award longlist? There's a breakdown of them on Rain City Reads.
In The Rest Of My Life
The
five things I did with the Denver Five Things pass:
- I went to the zoo and saw zebras humping. The other animals were pretty awesome, too.
- I went to the science museum and learned that there are a lot of rocks in the world. And I saw a mummy.
- I went to the airplane museum and learned that I really don’t care about airplanes.
- I went to the botanic gardens and wandered through some nice Japanese gardens. I saw a rainforest plant with leaves that were taller than me.
- I went to the aquarium and didn’t get soaked by the flash flood simulator. As a kid, I went on many fieldtrips to the aquarium, and we’d always stand by the glass so we’d get splashed. I behaved like an adult this time.
I’m On The Social Medias . . .
Take care of yourselves
and be kind to each other! See you around the blogosphere!
You week sounds like a busy one but really good too. Enjoy your week!!
ReplyDeleteIt was a good week. I’m really tired, though.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Glad you had some fun, and got some free books.
ReplyDeleteYep. I don’t usually do that much stuff in a week.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
We have passes to the science museum. The mummy exhibit is pretty cool.
ReplyDeleteI’d like to go back. I hadn’t been there since I was a kid.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Lots of cool things you did this week. Aquarium, zoos - how wonderful! I have to go check out your book haul. A random lady giving out books - sounds great!
ReplyDeleteMary Sunday Roundup #31!
Yeah, it was really nice. She wanted to get rid of books and gave some of them to me.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Thanks for sharing, and I don't enjoy narrators who are bland, either, especially if I don't understand their motives.
ReplyDeleteI loved your five things...they made me smile.
Here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES
I need characters to have personalities or I get bored quickly.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Looks at all the fun things you did this week! I'm a little jealous. :)
ReplyDeleteI don’t usually get to have that much fun in a week.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Ha! I love your Denver Five sum ups :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm not a great fan of aeroplanes either. Congrats on adulting at the aquarium!
Haha, thanks! Adulting is hard sometimes.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I love the idea of a Denver Five. I wonder if Houston does anything like this.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your week!
It's City Pass and a lot of cities have it so probably.
DeleteI will look for it! Thank you!
DeleteHopefully they do. It was really cool to go to all of these places.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
That five things pass is kind of cool. Animal porn, airplanes, science, fish, and flowers - sounds like a good time to me, and 4 out of 5 isn't bad.
ReplyDeleteThe airplanes were tedious, but the rest was awesome. :)
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I'm sorry you're not liking The Possessions! The Five Things pass sounds awesome, though - all my favorite kinds of places to visit! Botanical gardens are always so fun.
ReplyDeleteThe Botanic Garden was one of my favorites. It was really hot out, but I liked seeing all the unusual plants.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Sounds like you were busy. I love all those things you did, though. Sounds like fun. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteYep. It was a good week.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Your five things was fun. Zabra's humping. LOL I used to avoid the monkeys because of that very thing! I get what you mean about a dry narrator. I almost gave up on listening to a series because of that. But, the second book and the rest had a different narrator and he was great!
ReplyDeleteMy Sunday Post
I’ve seen monkeys being exhibitionists at the zoo, but I didn’t expect it from zebras. Especially because they were all laying around in the shade a second before.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Shame about Pull Me Under, I love the cover and the premise. I'm glad you enjoyed the zoo, there's always something humping something else. Sounds like you had a lot of fun experiences. The Japanese gardens sound nice.
ReplyDeleteI was excited about Pull Me Under. I expected it to be harder-hitting than it was.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Hi, Aj. I entered the giveaway and it sounds like you had fun on your day excursions. I hope you find a better book to read this week. Take care.
ReplyDeleteThanks for entering the giveaway!
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Sounds like a good time with your 5 day pass. The zoo is always fun especially when the zebras put on a show for you :) Glad you acted like an adult at the aquarium (but sometimes it is fun to still act like a kid). Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI was tempted to run up and get splashed. I had a camera, though, and I’d have to go through the rest of the day in wet clothes. Not fun.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Ooh mythical creatures. Always fun to read about.
ReplyDeleteFunny how getting soaked ceases to be fun in adulthood.
The mythical creatures post was fun to research. I hope people like it.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I've never heard of Pull Me Under... sounds like a good read!
ReplyDeleteHA! Zebras humping! And I don't care for planes either!
Naomi @ Naomi’s Reading Palace
Pull Me Under sounded good, but I ended up being disappointed with it.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Bloglovin has decided to only randomly send me notification so I feel like I've missed a lot. I'm going to have to use my feed on their site instead of depending on email notifications. *sigh* A bland narrator/main character is never good. What is there to make me care? "I went to the airplne museum and realized I don't care about airplanes." Bahaha! Yeah, doesn't sound like the most thrilling museum.
ReplyDeleteTanya @ Girl Plus Books
I had issues with Bloglovin’ last week, too. I kept getting server over capacity messages. I probably missed A LOT of stuff.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Sorry that both books did not quite work for you. I hate when that happens bcs I think of all the time I spent hoping it will improve!!
ReplyDeleteYES! I really need to learn to DNF when I start getting bored.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
It sounds like you had a lot of fun going out and about the city! Sorry to hear that the Luce book didn't live up to your expectations. Have a good week!
ReplyDeleteThanks! The city was a lot of fun. I need to go there more often.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Urg! I do find it annoying when the narrator ignores what is right in front of her for the sake of the narrative arc on the assumption that readers are braindead numpties who have never read a book before... I do love the week of activities you had. That rainforest excursion sounds fabulous! I hope the coming week is just as good, if a tad quieter...
ReplyDeleteYES! Not seeing the problems was probably supposed to increase the tension, but it didn’t. It just made me wish that the character would hurry up.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Zebras are cool! I was in a jeep right next to a herd of them on a game reserve in South Africa and they were gorgeous! That camoflage really works with a big group of them.
ReplyDeleteGoing to Africa and seeing the animals in real life is one of my goals. It’s so expensive, though!
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Sounds like you had a good week. The Five Things pass sounds wonderful. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteThe Five Things pass was fun. I want another one so I can do it again.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
One of my biggest pet peeves is a narrator who figures things out more slowly than the reader does. I hope your next week offers some better reads! That Denver pass sounds so fun. I'd love to visit Colorado again :)
ReplyDeleteMy week here.
Yes! I was constantly frustrated with the character. I needed her to be smarter.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I'm going to check out your middle grade minireviews. My weekly update
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear that Pull Me Under was such a disappointment. The premise does sound good!
ReplyDeleteMy Monday Date
Yeah, it was sad. I had high hopes for that book.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
It seems like you had a busy week! I would love to have a week full of museum and exhibit visits! I'ms orry about your audio, I despise it when the narrator is slow on the uptake.
ReplyDeleteIt was a very fun week. I don’t usually get to do that stuff.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Wow! It sounds like there are a lot of fun things to do in Denver! The zebra humping might take some explaining to children but that's definitely not something you see regularly. Too bad about Pull Me Under. It sounds like a great premise but I think the narrator would drive me crazy. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI wonder how the parents explained the zebra humping. Everyone was just staring and laughing.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Sometimes it can be interesting to take a break from reading and go on a few adventures. I think I'm going to be chuckling about humping zebras for a while, lol. Hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI’d rather be having adventures than reading. I don’t get to adventure often. I read every day.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Sounds like you had a great week!! :) You even got to see humping zebras! Lol. :)
ReplyDeleteErin @ Cracker Crumbs
Yeah, that’s not something I see every day.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I hope whatever you pick up this week turns out to be a great read.
ReplyDeleteThanks! This week’s books have been much better. (So far.)
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Yay for doing outside things! The science museum sounds so awesome! I wish we had a good one closeby. It sounds like you had an awesome week!
ReplyDeleteI liked the science museum. I already want to go back.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
What a busy week! I love museums - though I also do not care about airplanes.
ReplyDeleteI learned that mummies are cool and airplanes are tedious. You have to really like planes to spend a whole day learning about them.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Great and busy week you've got there. I need a nap just reading about it.
ReplyDeleteMe too! I’m still tired.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Busy weeks do have a horrible habit of getting in the way of reading but hey! Zebras humping... That's a life experience! lol
ReplyDeleteYeah, that’s not something you see every day.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
You did things out the house instead of reading? Madness. Hope you enjoyed yourself out in the world, it certainly sounds like you did and you did so much!
ReplyDeleteHaha, I know! Leaving the house isn’t usually something I do.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Your week sounds great—museums and zoos and aquariums, oh my! I should try getting out and about more myself... but not until the temperatures cool down a bit.
ReplyDeleteIt was very hot. I was sweaty and disgusting at the end of each day.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
LOL the zebras. Not really funny. But, LOL.
ReplyDeleteI’m immature enough to think it was funny. :)
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I totally loved doing the flash flood thing when I was little... ;D
ReplyDeleteA stack of books I got from a random lady is wonderful and I love visiting botanic gardens. We went to one in NYC in May and it was fantastic. Happy reading and happy weekend.
ReplyDeleteDenver Five Things pass sounds like fun. Lots of times, we save those types of things for vacations and don't do them on our home turf. Good for you for getting out and about!
ReplyDeleteNicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction
Well, having your sister and her kids come out for vacation makes a good excuse to go play tourist. :)
