In My Reading Life
I did it! I finally conquered Gone With The Wind by Margaret Mitchell. This book is nearly 1000 pages. I've been reading it since December. It's April. Yeah. It's a long book. I took many breaks to read other books.
Most bookworms probably know what Gone With The Wind is about. It was first published in 1936 and is an American classic. It stars Scarlette O'Hara, the cunning daughter of a plantation owner. After the American Civil War destroys her upper-class life, she faces danger and starvation. She will do literally anything to survive.
"Literally anything" mostly means love triangles. I don't want to give away spoilers, but Scarlette's love life is quite complicated.
I put off reading this book for years because I couldn't see myself being interested in a slave-owner romance. Now, I'm glad I read it. This novel is deeply embedded in US literary culture. I can see how it has influenced modern storytelling. It reads like a soap opera. The characters are morally gray, and the interpersonal drama is nonstop. Scarlette is a memorable protagonist because of her personality. She's not a good person, but she's extremely intelligent, so she can overcome any obstacle. I (mostly) enjoyed reading about her.
We have to acknowledge that Gone With The Wind is very racist. The author describes the Black characters as if they are children or animals. It'll probably make you cringe. A lot.
Scarlette's attitude may also make you cringe. For me, her romantic angst was tedious. Sometimes, I put the book down for a few weeks because I lost interest. Then I'd get curious about the plot and pick it up again.
I guess I have mixed feelings about this one. It took me 5 months to finish, but I liked it more than I expected to like it. It has complex characters and a fast-moving plot.
If you're interested in American literature, I recommend giving Gone With The Wind a try.
In The Rest Of My Life
Five things that happened recently:
- If you're celebrating Easter, I hope it's fun.
- Girl hockey was on TV! I've been a hockey fan since I was a small child. It's pretty easy to find men's hockey games on TV. If you want to watch women's hockey, you have to watch it online. One day, I was flipping through channels, and I accidentally found a women's hockey game on TV. I was shocked. Someday, I hope the girls get as much attention as the boys.
- Brace yourself. Tourist season is coming. I'm back to fulltime park ranger work. I'm still searching for a higher paying job, but so far, no luck. Most of the jobs around here pay the same amount I'm making now. It's disappointing.
- New exercise plan. I found a 16-week exercise plan for people who want to get better at mountaineering. The first week was easy. Let's see if I can stick with it for 15 more weeks.
- I also ruined my exercise gains because a restaurant gave me a free burrito for my birthday. #NoRegrets.
Happy Easter!

Take care of yourselves and be kind to each other. See you around the blogosphere!

Congrats on conquering Gone With the Wind! I’ve considered reading it from time to time, but I would likely just wish for her death. Ha!
ReplyDeleteA free birthday burrito sounds pretty great. Good luck with your new exercise plan and with tourist season. Mountaineering is pretty cool.
ReplyDeleteWell done finishing Gone With the Wind! I've never read it, and probably won't, but I can appreciate your efforts. I'm currently reading (very slowly) The Winds of War. It's been on my shelf for ages and I decided this would be the year I finally read it. The mass market is over 1000 pages, so I may finish by the end of summer!
ReplyDeleteWe do a lot of RV camping and love our park rangers! Where do you work? We have been so impressed with the Oregon State Parks since moving here almost a decade ago. Park rangers are such hard workers and we so appreciate them.
Sending good vibes your way for the job hunt!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on finishing Gone With the Wind! That's a classic I haven't conquered and am not sure if I ever will... although it's been on my shelf for years. I'm doing a slow read of War and Peace now, one chapter every day, that will last the entire year.
ReplyDeleteI wish the pay was better for you but I’m looking forward to a new round of Ranger stories from you !
ReplyDeleteWishing you a great reading week
