In My Reading Life

Last week, I read The Deep by Alma Katsu. It's an alternate history horror novel about a ghost/demon/woman/thing haunting the Titanic before it sinks. I love Alma Katu's creativity. She finds fascinating ways to blend historical fact with spooky fiction. Her characters feel real because they're based on real historical figures, but the reader is never sure what's reality and what's the author's imagination. I like that unsettled feeling in a horror book.

I didn't love The Deep as much as the author's other book, The Hunger. The Deep is a bit too slow for my tastes. It was easy to put the book down and read something else because it took a long time for something spooky to happen. I got slightly bored.

I'm still an Alma Katsu fan. I used my Christmas money to buy The Fervor and can't wait to read more historical horror.

In The Rest Of My Life

Five things that made me happy recently:

  1. There's finally snow. It's been a hot winter so far. I hate it. Summer is hot enough.
  2. I spent several hours reading a book without being interrupted by my phone or people in the house. I forgot what it's like to be left alone.
  3. Book shopping with Christmas money! I got The Fervor for me and a picture book about mythical creatures for Brooklyn. She's interested in unicorns and monsters and stuff.
  4. I applied for a new job. I don't have high hopes because I'm probably not qualified, but I would very much enjoy living above the poverty line someday.
  5. Does anyone else use the Obsidian app for note taking? I downloaded it because I'm serious about learning my 11 things. Do you have any tips for me? Are there plugins I should be using to make it a better tool for remembering information?

I Hope You Had An Excellent Start To 2026!

Take care of yourselves and be kind to each other. See you around the blogosphere!

  1. I feel the same way, I enjoyed The Deep but loved The Hunger more. I always like reading Alma Katsu's books, she does so much research for them! Hope you have a great week:-)

  3. We are in a white out right now. I am not a fan of snow. Good luck with the job. I am always surprised when people I know apply for and get jobs I didn't think I (or they ) were qualified for. You never know.

  4. I do need to give Alma Katsu a read at some point. I hope you get the job you applied for. I feel you on not being confident. In my case I just know that I suck at interviewing and then with me being at the upper end of the payscale at my age, they will most likely choose to hire the cheaper/younger candidate. I just want out of the hell I work in right now. I was glad for a snowy weekend to hang out at home this weekend. Hope you have a good week!

  5. Fingers crossed for the job! I wish you could send some of that heat across to us - I've got very tired of chilly rain - not that I'll complain too loudly given how many folks have truly suffered with floods and mudslides recently. Have a great week, AJ.

  8. You always have such great plans and ideas. I hope the job works out for you. You can have the cold and snow. I did that for 35 years in MN and I'm done living in it. I went skiing every weekend. We only get snow 1-3 days a year. It's more like freezing rain right now which is really more dangerous.

  9. I like to see these end of year updates. I am still working on three books I didn't quite get to in 2025 but then I turn the page and start reading the new stuff.

My heart is heavy this week: https://headfullofbooks.blogspot.com/2026/01/sunday-salon-minnesota.html

  11. I don’t know anything about Obsidian, I just use the Apple Notes app for everything from recipes to drafting posts.
Good luck with the job application, it never hurts to try.

Wishing you a great reading week

  12. Good luck with the job application! And good on you for trying! The one thing you can be sure of is that you won't get a new job if you don't even try!

    Have a great week!

  15. Glad you got the snow you wanted. I'm already tired of our snow. I haven't heard of your book this week. It sounds way out of anything I usually choose to read. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  16. We definitely got snow, too! The Deep sounds so interesting, even though it's not a genre I would typically reach for. Alone time is nice! Hope you have a great week.

  17. Good luck getting the new job. I haven't used Obsidian, but have seen the Wallflower Digest chat about using it, esp for tracking books. Maybe you can find some tips there: https://thewallflowerdigest.co.uk/tag/obsidian-vault/
