January 2020 Book Releases
You Too?: 25 Voices Share Their #MeToo Stories by Janet Gurtler (Editor)
Young Adult
Nonfiction/Essays
January 7, 2020
A timely and
heartfelt collection of essays inspired by the #MeToo movement, edited by
acclaimed young adult and middle-grade author Janet Gurtler. Featuring Beth
Revis, Mackenzi Lee, Ellen Hopkins, Saundra Mitchell, Jennifer Brown, Cheryl
Rainfield and many more.
When #MeToo went viral, Janet Gurtler was among the millions of people who began to reflect on her past experiences. Things she had reluctantly accepted—male classmates groping her at recess, harassment at work—came back to her in startling clarity. She needed teens to know what she had not: that no young person should be subject to sexual assault, or made to feel unsafe, less than, or degraded.
You Too? was born out of that need. By turns thoughtful and explosive, these personal stories encompass a wide range of experiences and will resonate with every reader who has wondered, “Why is this happening to me?”
Why it
interests me? Mostly because Mackenzi Lee and Ellen Hopkins have essays in
it. I like their fiction and want to see what they can do in essay form. Also,
I think it’s an important book for teens.
Infinity Son by Adam Silvera (Infinity
Cycle #1)
Young Adult Fantasy
January 14, 2020
Growing up in
New York, brothers Emil and Brighton always idolized the Spell Walkers—a
vigilante group sworn to rid the world of specters. While the Spell Walkers and
other celestials are born with powers, specters take them, violently stealing
the essence of endangered magical creatures.
Brighton wishes he had a power so he could join the fray. Emil just wants the fighting to stop. The cycle of violence has taken a toll, making it harder for anyone with a power to live peacefully and openly. In this climate of fear, a gang of specters has been growing bolder by the day.
Then, in a brawl after a protest, Emil manifests a power of his own—one that puts him right at the heart of the conflict and sets him up to be the heroic Spell Walker Brighton always wanted to be.
Brotherhood, love, and loyalty will be put to the test, and no one will escape the fight unscathed.

Why it
interests me? Adam Silvera’s novel More Happy Than Not is one of my favorite books ever. I don’t read much fantasy,
but I’ll be picking up this one for sure. If Adam Silvera writes it, I’m
automatically interested.

Six years after a global pandemic wiped out most of the
planet’s population, the survivors are rebuilding the country, split between
self-governing cities, hippie communes and wasteland gangs.
In postapocalyptic San Francisco, former pop star Moira has created a new identity to finally escape her past—until her domineering father launches a sweeping public search to track her down. Desperate for a fresh start herself, jaded event planner Krista navigates the world on behalf of those too traumatized to go outside, determined to help everyone move on—even if they don’t want to. Rob survived the catastrophe with his daughter, Sunny, but lost his wife. When strict government rules threaten to separate parent and child, Rob needs to prove himself worthy in the city’s eyes by connecting with people again.
Krista, Moira, Rob and Sunny are brought together by circumstance, and their lives begin to twine together. But when reports of another outbreak throw the fragile society into panic, the friends are forced to finally face everything that came before—and everything they still stand to lose.
Because sometimes having one person is enough to keep the world going.

Why it interests me? I’m
always looking for great dystopias. The early reviews of this one have been
very positive. Shannon @ It Starts At Midnight read it early and listed it as
her favorite book of 2019.
Are
you looking forward to any January book releases?
I'm looking forward to INFINITY SON because I love fantasy books. A BEGINNING AT THE END also sounds interesting! I've been trying to read more from asian writers, plus it falls within the realm of SFF.
ReplyDeleteThese are some great picks. A Beginning at the End is a new one to me. Thanks for sharing it!

The Mike Chen books sounds awesome! I'm definitely going to be checking that one out.
ReplyDeleteThese all look awesome! I am particularly looking forward to the sequel to King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo. Happy new year!
ReplyDeleteThere are two horror book releases in January that I cannot wait for! https://www.ericarobynreads.com/2-january-book-releases-i-cant-wait-to-read/
ReplyDeleteInfinity Son sounds good and I could see myself reading A Beginning at the End. January seems to be a pretty busy publishing month!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know Mike Chen had another book coming out, looks good!
ReplyDeleteI have a TTT list for next week which is about the ten books I want to get that are being released between now and June. There are a few January releases on the list! I will need to limit my purchases where possible so that I can meet targets for the TBR reduction though.
ReplyDeleteI'm terrible about remembering what's releasing and when unless it's a book I'm actively stalking (like desperately so)... There is one I'm looking forward to in January though and that's Karen Chance's Shatter The Earth.
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoy your books!
I have Mike Chen's book preordered.
ReplyDeleteI'm really curious about Infinity Son. I love Adam Silvera- More Happy Than Not is an all time favorite of mine too. I don't read a ton of fantasy, but like you said, I'll read whatever Adam writes. :) I think You Too? sounds interesting and it's an important topic (especially for teens).

The Beginning of th End sounds really good. 👍✨
ReplyDeleteI have to say I was really disappointed by Infinity Son :( More Happy than not is one of my favourite books too, but fantasy was just not a genre for him, I don't think. I so want to read The Beginning of the End as well! It sounds amazing and reviews have been soaring :D
