Happy Mother's Day! |
The Sunday
Post is hosted by The Caffeinated Book Reviewer, and The
Sunday Salon is hosted by Readerbuzz. They’re a chance to recap the
past week, talk about next week, and share news. It’s Monday, What Are You
Reading? is hosted by Book Date. I get to tell you what I’ve read
recently.
On The Blog Last Week
- On Tuesday I talked about characters who remind me of me.
- On Saturday there was a book haul.
On The Blog This Week
- On Tuesday I talk about books which are coming to a screen near you.
- On Thursday I do the Game of Thrones tag.
- On Saturday there’s a book haul.
In My Reading Life
Last
week, I finished Vivian Apple Needs a Miracle by Katie Coyle. I didn’t like it as much as the first
in the series because the characters rely too much on luck and coincidence to
survive. Vivian Apple is a solid duology, though. It’s full of action and
twists.
Then I listened to From
the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg. I think
I would have loved this book as a preteen. It’s like an updated version of The Boxcar Children. As an adult reader,
I wanted more explanation of a few things.
Right
now, I’m reading The Little Friend by
Donna Tartt. If this novel is anything like Donna Tartt’s other books, it’ll
take me weeks to finish. Can’t she write anything reasonable sized?
In The Rest Of My Life
Five things that made me happy last week:
- Game of Thrones! I’m not happy that one of my favorite characters got
decapitated, but at least the deaths were unexpected in episode 4. Bring on #5!
- I saw a sci-fi movie called Passengers. It brings up some interesting ethical questions, so I liked it.
- I went for a 9-mile walk. My feet hated me the next morning. The walk was nice, though.
- We got flowers for the garden. Now it needs to not snow anymore so we can plant them.
- Hanging out in the library.

I feel like GoT is moving too fast. In previous years, they'd have had half a season leading up to the events in ep3 and the coming event s in ep5. Now it's just like bam bam bam! Still liking it though... Mostly.
ReplyDeleteI've heard lots of interesting things about Passengers. I haven't seen it yet but I'll watch it eventually.
I'm really enjoying this season more than I did last season but I'm in a state of dread over these last two episodes-I wish I could see both right now!
ReplyDeleteI also wasn't happy about that character death. I also wasn't happy that it was spoiled - I banned forever a thousand GoT related tags from Twitter, but people always seem to make up new stuff! >=( I watched Passengers a while ago and I quite enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteHappy readings!;)
Tânia @MyLovelySecret
I loved The Boxcar Children. I may take a look at the book you mentioned just for fun. I've read many YA Books as an adult and surprisingly they've pulled me out of some tough mental times.
ReplyDeleteNine miles is some kind of long walk! Good for you. I need to take a nice long walk now and then.
ReplyDeleteI read My Little Friend, but it didn't know my socks off like The Secret History did for me, way back when I read it. I keep seeing Goldfinch on good book lists, and I think I should read it one of these days.
Have a great reading week!
I still haven't bought plants for my yard yet, my tells me it is still a little cold. Hopefully soon, though, I am ready to see some color back there!
ReplyDeleteI was gobsmacked when I saw a friend of a friend on Facebook talking about Colorado getting snow, although I think May snow has happened here a couple of times in my life, but not recently. We've been having cool days and cold nights, but not enough for snow! ⛄
ReplyDeleteI still need to finish The Goldfinch. 😜
Have a wonderful and warmer week. 🌞
I liked From the Mixed Up Files, but I LOVED the adaptation. Like obsessive level love. Watched it a billion times. I was so excited, when my daughter read the book, and made me take her to the Met. You are a walking machine! I wish I had your motivation.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great walk. I'm loving Game of Thrones. I can't believe it's almost over!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Passengers, though I kinda hoped that their descendants would wander out of the utopia they built. I havent yet read any of Tartt’s books, though I have her first two on my shelf. I hope you enjoy The Little Friend.
ReplyDeleteHave a great reading week
Oh wow, I hadn't thought of the Boxcar Children series in AGES. I loved those growing up! Hehe thanks for the trip down memory lane!
ReplyDeleteA GOT tag sounds fun! And I can't wait for tonights episode. But I agree that beheading was so sad, she was a brilliant character.
ReplyDeleteI loved The Mixed Up Files... I still have my paperback copy from my childhood. I hope your weather is lovely for your garden. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteAnne - Books of My Heart Here is my Sunday Post
9 mile walk! That's crazy! And I can't wait for this new episode of GoT. I got so sad over that death 😭
ReplyDeleteGenesis @ Whispering Chapters
Ooh a Game of Thrones tag. That sounds entertaining. I think I saw Passengers too- was that the one with Jurassic PArk dude and Jennifer Lawrence? That was kinda thought provoking...
ReplyDeleteI need to read some Vivian Apple methinks.
It seems like Games of Thrones continues to shock viewers! I still need to watch that show! Hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteHere’s my Sunday Post!

I'm trying really hard to avoid all GoT news since I'm seasons behind---it's been a relatively fruitless effort, but I haven't spoiled myself on anything too major somehow.

9 miles! Awesome! I am back at the gym. 3 times a week. Plus school plus work. Oh lord. I am tired. I hope you have a great mother's day!
ReplyDeleteMary
I wasn't happy about that death either and looks like it had some impact on others.
ReplyDeleteI liked the ethical questions in Passengers too.
9 miles is a good job. I need to start doing 1 or 2 a day again.
I hope you get to plant your flowers soon.
Happy Reading!
I listened to the Mixed Up Files... a few years ago. I remember wanting to read it as a kid but the school librarian said I wasn't old enough for it. That put me off reading it for about thirty years! My weekly update
ReplyDeleteA nine mile walk is significant, good on you. Game of Thrones too violent for me!
ReplyDeleteThat GoT death upset me too. I just finished watching ep 5 and OMG, that was intense! I'm just sitting here like O.o
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your 9 mile walk - I think I would have died. I'm still not over last nights GoT's episode. In one episode they killed so many characters and ruined many of the others still alive. ARRGGHHH!
ReplyDeleteI never read From the Mixed-Up Files, but remember my kids loved that one. The Little Friends has been on my list for a long time...I loved The Secret History and have The Goldfinch waiting on my kindle. Nine miles is so long. No wonder your feet were killing you. My longest walk this year has been six.
ReplyDeleteNope! Donna Tartt only writes LONG books. I admire you for listening to one that long. Length always scares me away on audiobooks. Sadly, The Little Friend was my least favorite of her books. Hope it works better for you.
ReplyDeleteWoah, that is a very long walk - but go you! And I always love hanging out in the library.

Sounds like a lovely week! Enjoy your books and the new week, and thanks for visiting my blog.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't heard of either of these books, so thanks for sharing. Nice walk. Not sure I would be up to nine miles. I am with you on the snow. We had a tiny bit yesterday morning, but on Saturday I was gardening. Crazy weather.
ReplyDeleteHope you have a great week.

Missed last night's GOT (we were at my mom's) -- now must avoid all spoilers until tonight when we can catch up.
ReplyDeleteI've been meaning to see Passengers but I'm waiting for it to be free on Netflix or Amazon Prime. :)
ReplyDeleteDonna Tartt writes some serious chunkers. GoT was pretty epic last night. Daenerys seems to have become everything she once stood against. At this point I could see Jon or Arya taking her out. Um, a 9 mile walk... wow. No wonder your feet hurt!
ReplyDeleteThe Mixed-Up Files is one of the few books I specifically remember a classroom teacher reading to me. 4th grade. It was probably a hot new title at the time, and we loved it.
ReplyDeleteNine mile walk...I used to be able to do stuff like that. Sounds lovely. But snow in May does not.
I loved From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler as a kid! I read so many of E. L. Konigsburg's other books as well! And a 9 mile walk sounds intense! Although there's some part of me that loves the idea of talking such a long walk!
ReplyDeleteGreat walk! I have had a particularly sedentary week but hope to move more this week. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteRe Game of Thrones - the pacing is off this season and certain character arcs are rushed but it's still entertaining - I see it has people in their feelings though.
ReplyDeleteRe Passengers - is that the one with one of the Chris' and Jennifer Lawrence - ethical breach for real if so.
Re Walking - love it...one of my fav things.
Re flowers and snow...is it snowing still? Summer fruits like mangoes are already starting to come in where I am.
I've heard loootttsss of opinions on Passengers. It sounds like you had a good week; did you pamper your sister for Mother's Day? 😘
ReplyDeleteI hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteYour poor feet! Lol! Nice you got some great scenery, though. I haven't got on the GoT bandwagon because I've heard Martin has no trouble killing off beloved characters. I saw Passangers a while back and I was a bit unsettled by the concept, but it was good. Have a great week, A.J.! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm soo behind in GoT! I need to catch!! That stinks that it's still snowing where you live! I hope you have a great week!!
ReplyDelete~ Kendra @ Kendra Loves Books
Nine miles is awesome! I would love to do it, but would have to go solo. My hubby can't do it anymore. He has some nerve damage in his leg.
ReplyDeleteYay for lovely flowers, chilling in libraries and walking so much! So good for you and so much free air <3 I also liked some elements of Passenger, but then there were some I didn't like?
ReplyDeleteI'll be interested in hearing your take on GoT at the end - non-spoilers, of course...or via e-mail, with spoilers. So far, my wife and I are overall underwhelmed. And I'm glad you're not Ramsay Bolton. :)
ReplyDeleteAJ the last episode of GOT was insane!!! And how they portray now Daeneris is a mockery! I am watching it vicariously through my daughter's scream while blogging in the kitchen and it's heated!!! LOL
ReplyDeleteYay for a 9 mile walk! I recently went for a walk last week as well. I took the Littles with me and they were not happy with me. I feel like I'm missing out on how awesome GoT is but I want to watch it when it is completed because I'm the most impatient person and I feel like I couldn't wait every week for a new episode. I need to know what happens right away.
ReplyDeleteI hope you have had a wonderful week!
Tina @ As Told By Tina
I am not watching game of Thrones, but I've been seeing quite some posts about it. I haven't watched Passengers, but I heard some good things about it. Glad your walk was nice even tough your feet hated you the next morning. I hope you can plant your flowers soon.
