The Sunday Post #194

The Sunday Post is hosted by The Caffeinated Book Reviewer, and The Sunday Salon is hosted by Readerbuzz. They’re a chance to recap the past week, talk about next week, and share news. It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? is hosted by Book Date. I get to tell you what I’ve read recently.

On The Blog Last Week

On The Blog This Week

  • On Tuesday I recommend books for rainy days.
  • On Saturday I review two young adult books.

In My Reading Life

Do you ever have those weeks where so much stuff is happening that you can’t concentrate on anything? That’s what happened to me last week. I only finished one book. It was Dreams of Gods & Monsters by Laini Taylor. It was okay. I’m glad I finished the series, but it’s my least-favorite novel in the trilogy. It doesn’t have the clever plot twists I loved in the first book.

Right now, I’m reading In A Handful Of Dust by Mindy McGinnis. I really like Mindy McGinnis’s writing style, so I’m happy.

In My Internet Stalking Life

In The Rest Of My Life

Five things that made me happy last week (Game of Thrones edition):

1. Game of Thrones is on tonight! It’s here, people! We’ve been waiting for so long!

2. The hype for this TV show has been nuts. Pretty much my whole Twitter feed is Game of Thrones excitement. Of course there are a bunch of judgmental threads that say, “I hate GoT, and here's why you’re a terrible person if you like it,” but I profoundly don’t care.

4. Do you need a GoT recap before the show starts? Here’s a quick one (in poetry form).

5. This lucky (?) gentleman watched all 67 GoT episodes in one sitting. (Also, I’m going to make myself a Red Wedding cake. That seems like a hilariously delicious idea.)

Winter Is Here

Take care of yourselves and be kind to each other! See you around the blogosphere!

  2. I have hemmed and hawed about reading that Laini Taylor series forever, but you never know. πŸ“š

How many GoT seasons is this? I haven't watched since finishing the third season when I got rid of our cable. I know the library has all the DVDs and I need to get over there, so I can finish watching and catch up!πŸ‰

Have fun tonight! I hope you make the cake. 🍰

Wasn't it fabulous that a woman configured the math formulas for the black hole photo transmission? πŸ™ŒπŸ™ŒπŸ™Œ

    Have a wonderful week! 🌞

    1. This is the 8th season of GoT. I really liked the first book in Laini Taylor’s series, but the other two were just okay.

  4. That was me couple weeks ago. I had so much going on that I hardly got any reading done and was constantly tired. Hope your schedule becomes more manageable. Have a great week!

  5. I need to get into Game of Thrones, I feel like the only person who doesn't watch lol. That happens to me too, I get too busy to sit and concentrate on reading some weeks.
    Enjoy your week!

    1. All the hype is probably confusing and overwhelming for people who don’t watch the show. It’ll be over in 5 weeks. :)

  6. I hear you on GOT. I also hear you on No. 9 from your Top Ten Tuesday post this past. I've attended many of those pretentious and confusing poetry readings too. Since you're out in the western part of the country, they probably weren't the same ones. :)

My wife has been rewatching all of GOT this past week or two, not like James' employee. We will be watching on Monday since my wife works Sunday night.

    1. I rewatched all of the episodes, but it took me a few weeks. I could never do it in one sitting. That’s intense.

  7. So I stopped watching GOT after Sensa's wedding night. I have't been able to catch up after that and now I am just way behind.I am going to wait until it's over and binge watching (skipping the red wedding because honestly still not over that). I watched the recap because I don't mind spoilers, I actually was going to just watch it to see if I could keep up but maybe I'll watch the last one. Sucks they aren't giving it a full season.

Have a great week, AJ! Enjoy GOT! :) Happy Reading!

    1. Yeah, I wanted a full season. There’s so much that needs to be wrapped up! I’m not over the Red Wedding, either. That was way too traumatizing.

  8. I feel so left out of the GoT hype - I haven't watched beyond the first season! I've read the books and impatiently waiting for the next one to come out, so I might have to follow along with this season just so I know what happens/how it's going to end.

  9. This time of the year is as busy for me as the Christmas season. It's beautiful weather, suddenly, and everyone wants to do things outside. I can see where books can get left behind.

I hope GofT is all you hope it will be.

Thank you for sharing a little about Sunday Salon on your blog!

    1. Yeah, wanting to be outside is definitely cutting into my reading time. I’d rather go for walks than sit inside and read.

  15. I have never watched GoT, but I have no problem with other people liking it. My daughter and father love it, and I like them. I don't think people realize how epic that picture of the blackhole is. I was blown away by it (but, I taught astronomy).

  18. I wanted to watch GoT with my husband, but after the first two episodes, he was too upset about Bran getting pushed out the window and the Dire Wolf getting killed to keep going. So I'm sticking with the books. Because honestly, how can I not love the fact that he found those things so horrifying?

I love Mindy McGinnis. I read Female of the Species last year, then immediately went on to read the Not a Drop to Drink duology. And I totally agree about the Taylor trilogy petering out. But don't let that dissuade you from reading Strange the Dreamer. SO GOOD.

    1. GoT is really horrifying sometimes. I can understand why some people wouldn’t want to watch it. I’ve read a few Mindy McGinnis books and liked them all. Not A Drop To Drink is my favorite so far.

  24. I feel pretty out of the loop with Game of Thrones. I haven't watched it, and I'm leaning toward not watching it. Too many character deaths and too much gruesomeness for me! But I'm also really torn, because the costumes and cinematography and music all seem wonderful.

The black hole photo is awesome, and so is the young woman whose work resulted in the photo. And I loved it that something science-related took over the internet for a day or two.

    1. I was so happy to see how hyped people were for science. That’s unusual, and it was a great accomplishment for everybody who worked on the photo.

  31. I totally get what you're saying. It's been hectic around here too.

I've never seen GoT. It's so rare that I watch TV. Right now I like The Cool Kids, which stars Vicki Lawrence as a senior in an assisted living facility. It's hilarious. I like the Charmed reboot too, but the original is still my favorite.

Hope you get some reading done this week. Thanks for visiting my blog last Monday.

  37. Sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy Dreams of Gods & Monsters more. I’m always bummed when a series doesn’t end as strongly as it started. I’ve heard great things about Mindy McGinnis. I hope you’re liking that one more. Corden’s GoT recap was awesome. I loved it. And the writer he had bingeing the whole series was too funny.
