In My Reading Life
Last
week had my first 5-star read of 2018 and my first DNF of 2018. I’m slightly
obsessed with This Monstrous Thing by Mackenzi Lee. It’s a fun book. Five
stars! I DNFed How to Survive a Summer
by Nick White. I’m gutted about that because I was really looking forward to
reading it. The narrator pissed me off too much to finish it. He was passive aggressively
nice to people’s faces, but in his head, he was a jerk to everyone. I couldn’t
stand him.
After I
gave up on How to Survive a Summer, I
finished The Paper Menagerie by Ken Liu. Right now, I’m reading The Dumb House by John Burnside and Lungs Full of Noise by Tessa Mellas.
In The Rest Of My Life
Five
things that made me happy last week:
- Re-watching Planet Earth. BBC America had a marathon of nature shows last week. Nature is cool. And terrifying. And disgusting.
- I read my first 5-star book of the year.
- I updated my TBR list with all the translated books that you guys have recommended to me. Updating the list was fun, but let’s ignore the fact that the list now has over 600 books on it. Thank you for the recommendations!
- I’m getting better at using my new phone. I don’t feel like such a noob anymore.
- I noticed that this blog now has over 10000 comments. Thank you for commenting!
So many comments. |
Take
care of yourselves and be kind to each other! See you around the blogosphere!
I don't watch many nature things-too many animals being killed for my liking! I have a sensitive disposition!
ReplyDeleteYAY for your first 5 star read of the year!! That is awesome. I love Planet Earth. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteIt is always fun when you hit a blog milestone. Congrats on 10,000 comments! Yay for your first 5 star read. I just noticed yesterday that I have given every book that I have read this year 4 stars which is strange. I did have a dnf but that doesn't count in my mind. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI have had a copy of This Monstrous Thing forever. I think it's an ARC, so even longer than forever. I believe my co-blogger read it, but I am not super aggressive when it comes to physical books (my eyes are garbage!). I am glad you liked it. I may be convinced to give it a try.
ReplyDeleteI like that Planet Earth series too, it's fascinating. "On Tuesday I apologize to authors for forgetting their books."<- I can relate to that one, there's never enough hours in the day. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteSomeone told me there's a new Planet Earth out. Planet Earth 2? I hope to look for it.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you had a five star read. Nothing keeps me reading (and, simultaneously, oddly, can bring my reading to an absolute halt) like a five star read.

I want a gif of your happy dance. I'v e always wanted to ask that.
ReplyDeleteLoved your resolutions. By reading 17 pages, you will eclipse my entire haul for 2017. I'm not proud of that. I need to read more. I want to read more.
Looking forward to our paths crossing in the Instagram. Imagining you with a smartphone is like imagining me reading a book!
Was he supposed to be a jerk?
ReplyDeleteOr did the author just go too far in an effort to humanize him?
Congrats on the 10,000 comments! Glad you had your first 5 star read this year!
ReplyDeleteHere’s my Sunday Post!
Ronyell @ Rabbit Ears Book Blog and join in this week’s Book Photo Sundays!
Yay for your first 5-star read of the year!
ReplyDeleteCongratulation for 10k comments (and here’s 10,001)
ReplyDeleteOoh Agents of dreamland. I remember seeing that one and being curious...
ReplyDeletePlanet Earth *nods* I watch some of the documentaries on Netflix too sometimes, there are some good ones. I've been watching Blue Planet a bit.
I am sorry to hear How to Survive a Summer didn't work for you. I can see why though, from what you said about the main character. And yay for reading your first 5 star book of the year! I hope you continue to have many more of those 5 star reads. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteOooh! I'm so interested in This Monstrous Thing, so I'm excited that you loved it! I may have to grab it soon!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear you enjoyed This Monstrous Thing, it's been on my shelf for aaaages but I just haven't quite got to it :(
ReplyDeleteI hope you have a great week!
We stopped partway through Planet Earth II -- I think politics got in the way. ARGH
ReplyDeleteI had a review copy of This Monstrous Thing and enjoyed it. None of the other books you mention are familiar. I'll have to check back tomorrow to find out about your apology. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteooo This Monstrous Thing was a five-star read for you? I'll have to add it to my list!
ReplyDeleteAnd congrats on all of the comments love!
Definitely adding This Monstrous Thing to my list based on that. And I second the request of a gif of your happy dance!
ReplyDeleteYay for your first 5 star read!
ReplyDeleteI'm always fascinated by the nature things until they get a little too nature-y! That's too bad about the DNF but better that than wasting time on a book that's just meh. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteThis Monstrous Thing looks really cool! I will have to add it to my list. I have been watching Planet Earth as well. The cinematography is so amazing. Although, I don't like it when things die, which I realize is part of nature, but I still don't like it. Lol.
ReplyDeleteI met the author of This MOnstrous Thing at an event two years ago. I have it signed to me and still sits on my shelf unread. So sad. Glad to hear you are enjoying it. The author was really inspired by Mary Shelly and it was exciting to hear her inspiration for the book.
ReplyDeleteWe are like not even watching good shows lately. Maybe that's why I am getting so much blogging and commenting done, so at least there;s that. I think we have been watching The Sopranos since we missed the original airing of it.
I recently hit the 10,000 mark in comments too. It's so exciting and feels like a real milestone. Congrats to us both for being so comment worthy (hehe!).
Have a great and happy reading!
That's a lot of comments! Congrats! And I enjoyed This Monstrous Thing, it was different :) Sorry I kinda did this out of order, but you commented on 2 of my meme posts, and I was late replying back. Opps! Thanks for stopping by! Happy reading!
