release? Nominate it for a Cybils Award. I’m a judge for this prize, and I need
things to judge. Make me work!
On The Blog Last Week
- On Tuesday I mini reviewed two young adult books.
- On Thursday I wrapped up September.
- On Saturday I mini reviewed some spooky (?) novels.
On The Blog This Week
- On Tuesday I show you the longest books I’ve ever read.
- On Thursday I review a cake. Yep. A cake.
- On Saturday there’s a book haul.
In My Reading Life
Guys, I finally finished The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah. It took
me 3 weeks to read because it’s big and because I hate the main character’s
parents and could only stand them in small doses. I loved the first 70%. It’s
tense and atmospheric. The ending got too melodramatic for me.
A bunch of my most-anticipated
2018 releases have come out in the last few weeks. I’m trying to stay on top of
them so I don’t get crushed under their weight. Last week, I read An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank
Green. It reminded me of Ready Player One,
but with aliens and heavy-handed morals. Still, it was exactly the book I
wanted to read. It’s funny and escapist.
Then I read The Gentleman’s Guide to Getting Lucky
by Mackenzi Lee. For a free book, it’s pretty good. Mostly it made me excited
to read Lady’s Guide. Actually,
that’s probably the whole reason that this book exists. To make people excited
about Lady’s Guide.
*Sigh.* I’m so susceptible to marketing. Well played, book people.
Right now, I’m rereading Vicious by V.E. Schwab because I want to
read the sequel, but I’ve forgotten everything!
In My Internet Stalking Life
- Laura @ Boats Against The Current wonders if she's too generous with star ratings.
- Do you have too many books? (Haha, why am I even asking that question?) Leah @ Quite The Novel Idea has tips for unhauling books.
In The Rest Of My Life
Five things that made me happy
last week:
- I saw V.E. Schwab and wrote about it here.
- Halloween shows on TV.
- I got a lot of reading done, which is good because I barely read at all last month.
- So many new releases. I have a big stack of books next to my bed.
- Cybils Award nominations are open. Anyone can nominate books, so go tell me what to read.

I think it's awesome you met V.E. Schwab. I just finished the Shades of Magic series and loved on it so hard. Also, I'm glad to hear the Hank Green book is worth reading; I've been going back and forth on that one.
ReplyDeleteI love Shades of Magic, too! I think Hank Green’s book is worth reading, especially if you like escapist stuff.

I will definitely be here on Thursday for the cake review!
ReplyDeleteI’m happy about that because I’ve never reviewed a cake before.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I want to read the V.E. Schwab book and how cool that you got to meet her! AWESOME! Have a wonderful week!
ReplyDeleteMary my #SundayRoundup #39!
YES! You need to read a VE Schwab book. I force them on everybody.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I keep seeing Schwab books everywhere, so I guess I should check her out! Thanks for sharing, and what fun to meet an author you enjoy.
ReplyDeleteI like the image of a big stack of books by the bed. Enjoy!
Here are MY WEEKLY UPDATES
Please check out a VE Schwab book. They’re fun.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Oooh you are so lucky you could meet VE Schwab! I would have loved meeting her at YALC had she attended. Have abrght Sunday!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I did feel lucky. It was a really good event.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I don't watch a lot of TV, but I am excited that the Halloween Baking Championship has started! There are A LOT of great-sounding new releases that have just come out or are coming out soon. I have a lot of highly anticipated sequels I'm looking forward to. Enjoy your new books!
ReplyDeleteI’m excited for Halloween Baking Championship, too. It combines two of my favorite things: food and spooky stuff.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
A cake review! Awesome. Who says book blogs can't be eclectic? And sorry to hear Stranded was a tad disappointing- anything Arctic and terrifying at least gets my attention, I have no idea why.
ReplyDeleteOoh VE Schwab! I haven't read Vicious but am currently playing a murderous game based on her book, so yay!
The cake is book-related! Hopefully the review will appeal to cake lovers and book lovers. I’m rereading Vicious right now and loving it just as much as the first time.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I look forward to seeing how you get on during the Read-a-thon. I'm not sure if I'll be able to take part this year. I kept saying I would join in at some point, but I've not read too much recently.
ReplyDeleteI'm intrigued by your cake review, hehe.
Cait @ Click's Clan
I hope the readathon goes well. I tend to fail at them, but they’re always fun.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I actually JUST read Vicious, so I'm pretty pumped for the sequel. I hope to find time this month to read it! I need to read the Gentleman's Guide e-novella too. :)
ReplyDelete-Lauren

I’m rereading Vicious now. There are a few Halloween readathons coming up, so I’ll have an excuse to read the sequel.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Ooh, I'm looking forward to your longest books post and I can't wait for a cake review! I really love cake. I've wondered how An Absolutely Remarkable Thing will be, so I'm glad to hear it's going well. It's so neat that you got to meet V.E. Schwab, she seems so incredible.
ReplyDeleteI'm super excited for Halloween TV shows, too. Food Network is always fun for Halloween food shows and I'm always in. There really are a ton of new releases, it's impossible to keep up.
Have a great week!
I really love cake, too. I have the Food Network on pretty much all day because I never get sick of re-watching the Halloween shows.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
How exciting to meet V. E. Schwab! My Robin would be jealous.
ReplyDeleteI would like to do the Dewey readathon, but I'm nervous to sign up because I know I will be working flat-out on a work project that weekend, and I might not have time to spend even half a day reading.
I think I've read a book or two that I would recommend for the Cybils. I'll rummage through what I read this year and see what I can come up with.
Have a great week!
YES! I really hope you nominate books for Cybils. I need good stuff to read!
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I am very excited about Dewey, I never last the entire event but it's still so much fun to read all day! :)
ReplyDeleteHalloween shows are awesome, I need to catch up on a few that I have missed but I know will be on again.
Have a great week, AJ! Happy Reading!
I always fail at Dewey’s, too. I’m too squirrely to sit still that long. I always give it my best shot, though.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Turns out the 24 hour read-a-thon directly coincides with a day where I will have the house completely to myself for most of the day. O_O So I'm going to try...
ReplyDeleteI actually really loved all of The Great Alone, but the first 2/3 were better than the last 1/3. It's a very intense book.
I will have to check out The Gentleman's Guide to Getting Lucky.
Have a great week!
I'm so glad that you've done well with reading this week. It took me five days to read Muse of Nightmares, which is a long time considering it's probably going to be on my top 10 list of books I read for the first time this year. But I've finished three books so far this month, so I guess I'm doing okay there (one was an audiobook).
ReplyDeleteThe Great Alone sounds good, but if it takes three weeks to read... eek. Although The Game of Thrones books took me a long time to read too.
This last couple of weeks has been full of books that I've absolutely loved. You're right about so many new releases. I've been going from one book that I love straight to another.
So many good books are coming out! I can’t handle it. I’ve also finished 3 books this month, but one of them was under 100 pages.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Yes! I'm doing Dewey's. Reading one long-ass book worked so well for me in April, that I'm going to do it again this time with A Game of Thrones. 👍✨
ReplyDeleteThe pictures from the stair hill are gorgeous. Thanks for sharing. 🌄
I want to read Hank Green's book. As soon as I see it on Hoopla I'm going to jump on it! 📚
Have a wonderful week. 🌞
Good luck with Dewey’s! I loved Game of Thrones. I need to get back to that series. I stopped after the third one.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
The Cybils Awards sounds awesome!
ReplyDeleteIt is! I can’t wait to start reading.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
You met Victoria Schwab?! I'm so jealous of you. I'm writing my MA thesis on her books, so meeting her would be a dream come true.
ReplyDeleteWishes of a great week.
Tânia @MyLovelySecret
Good luck with your thesis! I spent her whole event silently fangirling in my head.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I definitely want to check out the Kirsten Hannah book. I'm glad to hear you were still able to finish it although you didn't like some of the characters. ;)
ReplyDeleteHave a great week and happy reading!
I mostly hated them because they were so realistic. If you read it, I hope you like it.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I just added a V.E. Schwab book to my list the other day! I haven't read her yet. How cool you saw her!
ReplyDeleteWhen you read it, I hope you like it.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I always like your post header images, they are fun. And thanks for reminding me about Dewey’s Read-a-thon, I totally forgot. Very cool about V.E. Schwab!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your week and happy reading :) Also, now I want cake.
Aww, thanks! I work hard on my graphics, so I’m glad that people like them. If you’re participating in Dewey’s, good luck!
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I love meeting authors. I'm glad you had fun and had a helpful dad to drive you there. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteI had never met a well-known author before. I was massively excited and fangirled too much. :)
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
A cake review? Yes, please.
ReplyDeleteI’m excited for The Great Alone (despite the melodrama). Kristin Hannah has never disappointed me yet.
I’m curious about Hank Green’s book but there’s really no telling when I’ll get to it. There are so many others that are at the top of the list.
I hope you like The Great Alone! I mostly liked it.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Reviewing a cake - now that will be interesting! Interesting thoughts on The Great Alone - yes it was a little melodramatic at the end and I didn't particularly like the ending but I still liked the book.
ReplyDeleteOverall, I liked The Great Alone, too. The cake review should be interesting. I’ve never reviewed food before.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
There are some great books on that MG nomination list (though, I wish No Fixed Address were there). You have a lot of quality books to read there. I went and put a library hold for The Great Alone. I am #116, so I may be dead before I get the book, but I can hope my turn will come at some point.
ReplyDeleteThe nominations are still open, so you can nominate No Fixed Address, if you haven’t nominated books in that category yet. I’d love an excuse to read it.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Too bad about The Great Alone! I've been looking forward to that one! Hurray for Halloween TV shows! I really need to watch The Purge!
ReplyDeleteI liked it overall. The ending just made me roll my eyes. I need to watch The Purge, too. The TV show is pretty entertaining.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Halloween shows are so much fun. I need to look up It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. I think it airs mid-October. Hope you get some great reading done this week.
ReplyDeletehttps://thebookconnectionccm.blogspot.com/2018/10/its-monday-what-are-you-reading-october.html
Ooh, I’ll have to remember to watch that. Thanks for reminding me.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I am not signing up for the Readathon. 24 hours of reading and blogging about reading is too much of both for me. My weekly update
ReplyDeleteIt is intense. I have fun with it, though.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Oooh, a cake review? You've got my attention!
ReplyDeleteReviewing cake is delicious. I like it almost as much as reviewing books. :)
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I hope you get to read some awesome books for the Cybil Awards!
ReplyDeleteNicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction
I hope so, too! I’m already excited about some of the books on the list.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I have got to see this cake review. This is a job that I think I would be well suited for. I can't wait to see what books you end up reading for the Cybil Awards!
ReplyDeleteI wish I could get paid to review cake. I’d happily take that job.
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Do I have too many books...yes! It doesn't seem to stop me though!
ReplyDeleteIt doesn’t stop me, either. I just traded for another one. :)
DeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I'm looking forward to watching Halloween TV. So many shows and movies out there. I've been wanting to read the Kristin Hannah book, but I haven't gotten around to it. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteOh I'm so glad to hear the Great Alone is not THAT good because it is too long for my DNF habits ;-) Good luch with the Dewey’s Read-a-thon! I wish I could do readthons! :)
ReplyDeleteI hope you are reading some great books for the Cybils! I likely won't be taking part in the read-athon, but I imagine it will be a lot of fun. That is so great that you got to meet V.E. Schwab. I haven't read anything by her--but someday. I hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI don't think that there is any such thing as too many books!! I am all about getting as many as I can. :) I didn't realize the Dewey read a thon was so close...going to sign up because I love those.
ReplyDeleteThere are just so many books coming out! And awesome about meeting an author! Go books! Here's my IMWAYR post! Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteWow, you are reading some great books. I have heard good things about Great Alone but had no idea that it is so big? I hope to read it sometime soon.
ReplyDeleteAhh, An Absolutely Remarkable Thing is one of my anticipated reads of the year too and I am so glad that you enjoyed it. I have high hopes from it. I really hope to be bale to buy it soon :)
And it is so awesome that you got a chance to meet an author.
