In My Reading Life
We're halfway through Nonfiction November! My reading plan for the month has been derailed by headaches and fatigue. I seem to be stuck in a work, sleep, repeat cycle. I've only finished one book in November. So . . . oops.
I read Contagious: Why Things Catch On by Jonah Berger. It's a nonfiction marketing book about why some products and ideas succeed while others flop hard. The book held my interest, but it's also dated. It came out in 2013, and it feels like it came out in 2013. I would love an updated version that shows how marketing (especially on social media) has changed.
I like the structure of the book. The author identifies 6 elements that a product or idea must have to catch on.
- Social currency. The product should make users seem cool or interesting.
- Triggers. Things in normal daily life should remind people of the product.
- Emotion. If a product evokes happiness or anger, people will talk about it.
- Publicity. The product needs a unique logo or some other way of broadcasting itself to strangers.
- Practical value. If people find the product useful, they'll share it with others.
- Stories. People will remember a product that has a cool, relevant story behind it. (The author used Jared from Subway as an example. This is why we need an updated version of the book. Nobody could have foreseen the ending to Jared's story.)
Okay. Now you know how to make a product go viral. However, I cannot recommend hiring Jared as your company spokesperson unless your only goal is to go viral.
This book is a quick and engaging read, but the world has changed since 2013.
In The Rest Of My Life
Five things that happened last week:
- It was my dad's birthday, so cake happened.
- I also ate an excellent burrito.
- I finally bought Planet Zoo. It's a computer game that I have wanted to play for years. I never bought it because I feel guilty for playing games. They seem like a massive waste of time. However, Planet Zoo was released 6 years ago. If I've wanted to do something for 6 years, I should probably just do it. Now I need my headache to go away so I can stare at a screen.
- Speaking of headaches, I made an appointment to get my brain tested. Hopefully a doctor can tell me what has malfunctioned inside my head. For the past 8ish months, I haven't felt like a real human. I feel like a gently microwaved corpse with a day job. My appointment isn't until next month because there's a waitlist for these things. I want to know now!
- A shocking number of people in my neighborhood already have their Christmas lights up. I admire their enthusiasm.
Thanks For Engaging With My Nonsense!

It was my dad's birthday, but there was no cake. We need to fix that. Planet Zoo sounds fun. SIM games are great. Well, that sounds terrible. I hope the doctors can figure out why you are not feeling right.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry to hear about your headaches and hope they can figure out what's going on! Bad headaches just interfere with all aspects of life.
ReplyDeleteI’d definitely be on the aliens side at this point.
ReplyDeleteI hope you find a solution for your headaches, I had regular migraines from my teens which they blamed on hormones and to be fair they essentially stopped with the start of perimenopause in my 40’s but I’m still p*d they abdicated any responsibility in helping me in the meantime. Don’t let them fob you off!
Wishing you a great reading week
GOOD luck with the medical establishment.
ReplyDeleteUrg! Chronic headaches are the worst - it there any chance they have a cancellation and can fit you in earlier? And of course birthdays should have cake!! Contagious looks intriguing - but as you say, the world is completely different place since 2013. A tad disappointing that the author didn't take that into account when he decided to write about a subject that so quickly goes out of date.
ReplyDeleteAlly Maynard is not wrong. I am not ready for holiday decorating but we usually start on Christmas Eve. My daughter is much better. She plans and makes ornaments each year with different materials. Also, my daughter had a hellish 2024 until near the end when she finally found medication so she doesn't have migraines every single day. But it took time and the doctor's trial and error dictated by the insurance company to try the least expensive options first. I hope your appointments go better.
ReplyDeleteAnne - Books of My Heart This is my Sunday Post
Happy Birthday to your dad! I hope your medical tests go well. Have a great week!

ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about your headaches. I had migraines for years. I hope you get to the bottom of it soon!
ReplyDeleteLove the meme! I'm so sorry you are having headaches; pain is exhausting. I pray they find whatever is causing your headaches. My husband suffers from migraines and though I've only had one - that was enough for a lifetime. Hugs to you! Happy Birthday to your dad!
ReplyDeleteGood luck getting some answers from the medical specialists!
ReplyDeleteHa! Great meme!
ReplyDeleteThe joy of a great burrito can’t be overstated!
I’m sorry you’re feeling so unwell. I hope you can get some answers. Don’t let the medical establishment dismiss or gaslight you.
Sorry to hear about your headaches.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the tweet you pasted!
In my neighborhood too, Christmas lights go up early, one reason being actually to install them before it's too crazy cold. We had an insanely unusual 70 degrees (Chicagoland) Saturday, so a lot of people used that day for it
I'd be with the aliens too. I hope they can figure out what is causing your headaches. Contagious does sound good but an update would be useful. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteI really should play more Planet Zoo, sometime... I have it. I've just never played a lot of it, even though I used to LOVE Zoo Tycoon.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry to hear about the headaches and not feeling like yourself. I hope you are able to get answers that come with solutions!! So many people here have started decorating for Christmas as well.
ReplyDeleteI’m sorry to hear you’ve been having headaches. I hope you get some answers and can feel well again soon.
ReplyDeleteHave to love a good burrito. So sorry you have been under the weather. Hoping they can find answers for you soon.

Yikes, I hope you get some answers about your health soon! It's frustrating to not feel like yourself.
ReplyDeleteI love that quote with the aliens, I think a lot of people would help.
ReplyDeleteAhaha I can’t wait til the aliens come 😂 I bet they have their stuff more together.
ReplyDeleteI’m sorry to hear you’ve been feeling fatigued that’s rough. I haven’t finished many books in November either! I hope you can play your new game soon, it sounds like fun and I hope you enjoy it! :) I also hope you get some answers soon regarding your headaches, frustrating that you have to wait so long.
