In My Reading Life
I finished a novel! It was Wundersmith: The
Calling of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend. Can I
please have the third book in this series now? I don’t want to wait until
September or whenever it comes out. I need this series for my happiness! Wundersmith is about Morrigan Crow, a
young girl with super-powerful magical abilities. The people around her can’t decide
if they should teach her about her powers so she can control her magic, or if
they should not teach her about her
powers so she never learns how to hurt people with magic. It’s an interesting
conundrum.
Wundersmith
answered a few of the questions I had after finishing Nevermoor. I think I like
Nevermoor better? The plot of Wundersmith is meandering, as if it’s
setting up stuff that will happen later in the series. Still, I really liked
it! It's fun. I desperately want to know what happens next.
A book I didn’t like was Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. I’ve DNFed
it for now. I enjoyed the other Adichie books I’ve read. This one just isn’t
holding my attention. It’s so slow that I’ve lost interest in the characters. I
don’t know if I’ll pick it up again.
Right now, I’m
reading Son by Lois Lowry. It’s a
dystopia about a teenage mother who runs away from her community after her baby
is kidnapped. This novel has been on my TBR shelf for years. I’m glad I’m
finally reading it. So far, it’s okay.
I guess I should
also update you on what I’m reading with baby Brooklyn (because I’m counting
baby books toward my Goodreads goal this year. Don’t judge me.)
We read I Don’t Want to Go to Bed by Julie Sykes. It’s about a tiger who learns that staying up all night is not as
awesome as it appears. I like that the book shows nocturnal/diurnal animals.
There are a lot of words on each page, so Brooklyn squirmed through the end of
story. One-year-olds do not have very long attention spans. She’ll probably
like this book better when she’s older.
We read Baby Signs by Joy Allen. This book
teaches sign language and has illustrations of babies doing signs. I like this
one because I learned stuff! I wish the illustrations were more helpful,
especially because Brooklyn wasn’t looking at the book. She was watching me
make the signs. I tried to get her to do the signs, but nope.
Our greatest
reading success was Peek-A Who? by Nina Laden. We both enjoyed this one because it’s interactive. It’s a rhyming
book with holes in the pages. You look through the holes and try to guess
what’s hiding. It’s short and clever.
In The Rest Of My Life
Five things that
made me happy last week:
- Today is the last day of my 30-day yoga challenge! I’m still terrible at yoga. I’m going to try it for another 3o days. So . . . 30-day yoga challenge, part 2!
- I got a new app. It’s called Lose It, and it tracks calories and exercise. Creating my account was awful because the app kept crashing, but I haven’t had any problems since then. It’s been helping me eat less junk. I’m currently using the free version. I’ll upgrade if it actually helps me eat like an adult instead of like a ravenous feral kindergartner.
- New books!
- Is anyone watching Miracle Workers: Dark Ages? It’s the stupidest show ever, but I look forward to it every week. The second season is way better than the first. Since it’s an anthology, you can skip the first season and go right to this one!
- Crispy got another Pondathon badge. We’re
almost at the end of the readathon. Then you’ll never have to see this fish
again.

Take
care of yourselves and be kind to each other! See you around the blogosphere!
Wow, your blog got a makeover! fun.If you like the classics, you might like Tom Papa and his comedy bit about why the good ole days aren't so great. It's a fun little bit. Search on youtube
ReplyDeleteI’ve never heard of Miracle Workers til now, it looks pretty bizarre to be honest.
ReplyDeleteI hope the app proves useful, and you continue to enjoy Son.
Wishing you a great reading week
"I guess I should also update you on what I’m reading with baby Brooklyn (because I’m counting baby books toward my Goodreads goal this year. Don’t judge me.)"
ReplyDeleteWhy should we? Books are books! So enjoy them and have fun *smile*
Your new blod design looks beautiful. Love the colors. Happy reading and have a great new week.
I love all the interactive board books. I wish picture books were a little more interactive. I remember Peek-a-Who from the Cybils.
ReplyDeleteI started doing yoga when I got a cranky boss. I never thought I'd still be doing it...nine years later.
Americanah felt too preachy to me. I finished it, but it is my least favorite Adichie book.
Have a great week!
Um, I will miss that fish. He's kind of cute. How wonderful that you are fostering the bookworm in Brooklyn. It's nice to share something you love with someone you love. Good luck with yoga part 2 and eating like an adult. All good things!
ReplyDeleteWell AJ I see that you really take your well being seriously! But I am not so suprised as when we visited Colordao it was rumored that its inhabitant were the healthiests in the States!
ReplyDeleteI am curious about Son. I have had a few books patiently waiting on my shelves and should dig deeper.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your week!
I love that you're reading with your niece! My niece has loved books since the day she was born, so that makes me a happy aunt. I'm sure Brooklyn will pick up the sign language soon - all my nieces and nephews picked up certain ones at daycare and it was so cute watching them do it!
ReplyDeleteYay for yoga! Some of my friends over at FitReaders use the Lose It app and seem to like it. I need to do more now that I am not hauling boxes from house to house like last summer.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful week and enjoy your reading!
Anne - Books of My Heart Here is my Sunday Post
I love the 30 Day Yoga challenges! Are you using Yoga with Adriene? I'm not great at yoga either but I feel better when I'm doing it regularly. Which reminds me that I need to get back it. I would totally count the books towards your reading goal! 1 is kind of a tough age because they're able to follow a story but the attention span is so short. We were big fans of Sandra Boynton here. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteAmericanah has been on my wish list forever yet I never pick it up...think I've heard about about too many readers having a reaction like yours.
ReplyDeleteI love it when you read a series that is so good you need the next one NOW! I have always considered doing yoga but just haven't done it. Good for you for going on to round two. Have a great week, AJ!
ReplyDeleteI should pick up that app, Lose It! Keep working on yoga, that’s another thing I have thought of doing but haven’t ever done.
ReplyDeleteI like your new header. I TA a sign language class. We did Signing Time when my boy was little. Looking at drawings to learn sign language can be difficult. Good luck with the yoga!
ReplyDelete"ravenous feral kindergartner" haha. Right? I feel like that describes me sometimes. Food restraint? Not happening!
ReplyDeleteI've never read Lowry. Hope it picks up a little for you.
The Townsend series sounds pretty good!
Peek a Who was popular with both my kids when they were little. I still have our copy in storage. My weekly update
ReplyDeleteI watched the first episode of the first Miracle Workers - but I do think this season looks a lot better. I need to try and find the episodes I've missed and watch it.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad the app is working well for you so far. I really need to start eating better too - I'm not terrible, but I could do better. LOL
I love that you're sharing the baby books you read with Brooklyn! I love kid's books.

Wundersmith sounds cute! I've seen that series around quite a bit but never really taken a closer look at it. I hope the next book is less meandering. Great job completing 30 days of yoga! I always start those but never finish. And great job with Pondathon! I gave up when my dog got sick and I fell behind.
ReplyDeleteThat app sounds useful. I need to get back to my healthy eating plan real soon now. Come see my week here. Happy readng!
ReplyDeleteI think I also need that app because I've no clue of what it means eating like an adult. =P Good luck with yoga part 2.
ReplyDeleteHappy readings!
I feel like Lowry didn't need to write Son, because the open ending of The Giver is so good. But I still enjoyed it anyway. I liked Amerikanah a lot, but I listened to the audiobook, which sometimes helps me with books I struggle to get into.
ReplyDeleteYour blog looks awesome! I like the sound of the app. Kind of like WW app or a journal. Hope this week is amazing!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you've had a good week! Congratulations on finishing the first part of your yoga challenge, and good luck with finishing the second. I haven't read Son, but I remember loving The Giver and Number the Stars. I didn't even realize The Son was meant as a follow-up to The Giver, which makes me curious about what happened to Jonas at the conclusion.

Oh my, I am loving Wundersmith! That's a definitely a good week!! Says she who is frustrated with every book she picks up!
ReplyDeleteAmericanah was the only book I read by Adichi and I loved it...though I could have done without the love story.
ReplyDeleteNew books are always worth celebrating! I seem to have reigned in my 'buy all the books' impulse after going a bit overboard for two months on grabbing new things. Now comes the reading and DNFing them part!
ReplyDeleteI love that I've been finding lots of great MG reads on your blog lately! You convinced me to read Nevermoor (will pick it up SOON). I've never heard of Miracle Workers, but I guess I'll have to go check it out now.
