In My Reading Life
Nonfiction November is going great so far. Last week, I finished The
Blood of Emmett Till by Timothy B. Tyson. It was mostly a
refresher course on stuff I learned in high school, but I like that the author
explains why Till’s murder is still relevant in modern times.
Then I read Negotiating with
the Dead: A Writer on Writing by Margaret Atwood. Atwood analyzes
well-known works of literature to discover how writers see themselves and their
work. It reminded me of the textbooks I read for
literary theory and criticism classes in college. The book is somewhat interesting,
not very conclusive, and I have no idea why I need to know this stuff.
Next, I read Get Well
Soon: History’s Worst Plagues and the Heroes Who Fought Them by Jennifer
Wright. This is my favorite book I’ve read for Nonfiction November so far. It
doesn’t go in-depth about the diseases, but it’s funny and surprisingly upbeat.
I added the author’s other book to my TBR list.
Right now, I’m reading Salvation
on Sand Mountain: Snake Handling and Redemption in Southern Appalachia by
Dennis Covington.
In My Internet Stalking Life
- In honor of Election Day, Shannon @ It Starts At Midnight talks about fictional votes and real-life lessons.
- I had eyestrain last week and was a terrible blog-hopper. I'll do better this week. Maybe. Hopefully.
In The Rest Of My Life
Between midterm elections and eyestrain, last week felt like it
was a billion years long. Here are five things that made me happy:
- The elections went pretty smoothly in Colorado. I don’t think there were any huge problems like in other states. I helped vote a few Death Eaters out of the Ministry of Magic.
- Also, I re-watched Harry Potter movies. You could probably tell from the above ^^ statement.
- Nonfiction November has been fun. Every time I read nonfiction, I wonder why I don’t read more nonfiction.
- I got a new space heater! Honestly, this is probably a terrible idea because my last one started on fire, but typing with frozen fingers is difficult.
- This blog passed 200k pageviews. Thank you to all the humans and robots who share my nonsense on social media.

I love Margaret Atwood. I don't know if you read her Hagseed, a mixture of Shawshank Redemption and the Tempest, I believe but I loved it. There now saying the Tempest is one of Shakespeare's best plays, how does Time decide what which classics were better...

Florida's voting always seems to end in chaos! I've honestly been fed up hearing from Trump on our news this week complaining about everything so instead I cheered myself up with watching The Thing, Predator and the Alien films!

What a great and eclectic collection of nonfiction! I read nonfiction for my job (creating back-of-the-book indexes), so I only occasionally read it for pleasure, but the book on diseases sounds interesting.
ReplyDeleteAnd I love your comment about voting Death Eaters out of the Ministry. With only two posts open in my area, I wasn't able to vote anyone out, but I was able to keep a... well, I don't know if he's an Order of the Phoenix member, but at least he's on their side. Anyway, my vote helped keep him in office, so I can feel good about that.
I’m glad a good person got to keep his job! Supporting the good ones is just as important as voting out the bad ones.

I had a space heater many, many moons ago (under my desk at work), but I never had it catch fire. Now, I sit on my electric blanket. When my daughter was an undergrad at SU (it's very cold there), I got her a huge box of hand warmers for when she was working in the studio, which she used in conjunction with an electric blanket (I really love those things). Not a fan of being cold.

ReplyDeleteSpace heaters make my actual life. Our heat is included in our rent so as a result, we have no control over the heat. We have three space heaters so that we don't freeze!
I'm happy voting was smooth in CO. Illinois was decent, but watching GA, TX, and FL stressed me tf out.

Good on you for getting rid of those Death Eaters. We rid ourselves of a few as well, though my local election for state representative hasn't yet been called. It's been hard for me to get past all the election news to get any work in this week.

I’m loving my nonfiction right now! I don’t know why they don’t do mail-in ballots everywhere. It cuts down on the lines. I think more people would vote if the process was less annoying.

We got out and voted too. I took my son - he charmed all the polling place employees which I was thankful for, I was nervous about taking a three year old. (I kind of had to). But he got to see the system at work!

Congrats on your blogging milestone. Mine is rapidly increasing and I'd love to hit 200,000 before the year is out. I'm close. However, it is what it is so I'm not going to stress about it. Hope your new heater works out better. I'm really not ready for winter :(

I tried to vote out some Death Eaters but it was an odd year in NC with less positions up for vote. I have purchased but not yet watched any of the Harry Potter movies (last year for Christmas in digital format). I have read all the books and loved them. The Margaret Atwood book sounds too much like school to me! I like your observation that when you read nonfiction, you wonder why you don't read more of it. I often feel the same way. For me, I think it's a little harder to find books that match my tastes in nonfiction, but when they work, they really work.

Negotiating with the Dead: A Writer on Writing sounds intriguing and Get Well Soon looks fascinating. I'm a history buff, so those types of books interest me. I went for a few years only reading non-fiction. Then I started blogging and fiction took over my life.
